Chapter 2

Author: Three salaries
Christina's eyes widened slightly, but she quickly regained her composure, impatience filling her eyes.

"This again?" she retorted with a snort, her smile ice-cold, with a hint of disdainful amusement. "Fine. When do you want to file the divorce paperwork?"

Eli opened the car door and got in. "Right now."

Soon, they arrived at the courthouse. When the clerk asked why they were getting divorced, Christina curled her red lips and looked at Eli.

Eli said calmly, "Irreconcilable differences."

Christina's expression instantly turned ugly.

After looking at Zachary, who was still in Eli's arms, the clerk tried to persuade him.

"All married couples fight, Mr. Jefferson. Marriage isn't easy, so please don't make a decision out of anger. Your son is only about a year old, right? Surely you wouldn't want him to grow up without his mother."

By the time the clerk finished speaking, Christina had already signed her name to the divorce petition without a trace of emotion.

"You think you can use Zach to manipulate me, Eli? You're dumber than I thought. Anyway, it'll take 30 days for the divorce paperwork to be finalized.

"I suggest you take the time to screw your head back on properly and stop acting like such a loose cannon. This is the last time I'm going to indulge in one of your temper tantrums!"

She tossed down the pen and strode out without sparing Eli another glance. The clerks in the office exchanged looks, their eyes filled with nothing but sympathy as they looked at Eli.

Tears splashed onto the divorce petition as Eli slowly signed his name before handing it back to the clerk.

"Please proceed with the filing."

This was the third time Eli had asked for a divorce.

The first time, Jason accused him of stealing something. Christina didn't defend him right away. Instead, she allowed Jason to search him in front of everyone, making him prove his own innocence.

That was the first time it'd occurred to Eli just how little she thought of him. He didn't sleep that night. The next day, he asked for a divorce and packed his bags to return to his hometown.

By then, Christina had left on a business trip abroad. She rushed back on a long-haul flight and spent the entire night standing outside the Jefferson residence. With reddened eyes, she explained that she knew he hadn't stolen anything. She had only allowed Jason to search him because she thought it was the quickest way to prove his innocence.

And because Eli truly did love her, he relented and changed his mind about the divorce.

Sometime after that, Jason selectively took screenshots the parts of Eli's conversations with Christina where he'd expressed his love for her and posted them in the company-wide group chat.

What had originally been a mutual exchange between Eli and Christina was made to look like a one-sided crush on his part.

His reputation was completely ruined. His coworkers mocked and ostracized him. In a moment of desperation, he revealed that he and Christina were already married and exposed the truth that everything was Jason's malicious slander.

However, to protect Jason, Christina publicly denied having any relationship with Eli and even fired him.

After all that, she simply explained to him in a nonchalant tone, "Because you exposed everything in public, Jason would've been put in a difficult position at the company. Besides, it doesn't matter if other people know whether it's real or not. All that matters is that I know you're my husband."

That was the first time Eli had gotten into a major fight with Christina. He asked for a divorce for a second time.

Unfortunately, Christina became so emotionally agitated that she fainted and had to be taken to the hospital. When she woke up, they found out she was pregnant.

For the sake of the child, Eli swallowed his grievances yet again.

With every concession he made, especially after Zachary was born, Christina seemed to have become convinced that he only ever asked for a divorce in a bid to get her attention.

Alas, this time, Eli was serious about it.

He came out of the courthouse after signing the paperwork, just in time to see Christina's car speeding off.

A breeze brushed against his damp eyes. He recalled the day the two of them registered their marriage.

Christina was a tough woman who rarely showed her emotions, but when they took a commemorative photo on the day they got legally married, her smile was more radiant than any she'd previously shown.

At the time, Eli held Christina in his arms, his heart weighed by guilt. "Christina, it's all my fault. My family background is too ordinary, and I don't know how to win your parents over. I'm sorry you're suffering because of me."

Christina smiled as she hugged him back. "How could you possibly be blamed for that? It's my parents. They're too narrow-minded and domineering. The only condition they had for letting us register our marriage was that we keep it a secret. They won't even let us have a wedding.

"I know you've already given me everything you can. I'm more than satisfied. Just give me a little more time. I'll convince my parents. When I do, we'll have a grand wedding and let the whole world know that you're my husband."

Back then, Eli was convinced that Christina loved him, even if it were just a little bit.

Well, as it turned out, it truly was just a little bit—so little that even the slightest gust of wind could blow it away.

Christina's wounded leg was inflamed, so she was hospitalized once more. Eli was also taken to the hospital for a medical examination.Early the next morning, Gracie sent Christina all the information she'd uncovered. Christina took a deep breath before opening the file. The more she read, the paler her face became.Jason had deliberately attacked Eli in public and labeled him a homewrecker. He claimed that Eli had purposely flaunted their marriage in front of him, but that wasn't true at all.As for the time Eli was suspected of stealing something at an event, Jason had orchestrated that, too.Jason had taken screenshots of the chat logs that had been circulated throughout the company from Eli's phone. Eli had never deliberately sent them to Jason to show off, prompting Jason to retaliate out of spite, as he had claimed. The allergic reaction Jason had was another one of his schemes. He'd secretly used Christina's phone to transfer the money to the maid. He'd even staged the tim

Christina jumped into the water and swam toward Eli like a woman possessed.Up on the shore, Jason was stunned. The moment he saw Christina, his eyes flashed with panic."Christy! What are you doing here? Are you insane? Get out of the water at once! It's dangerous to swim in a reservoir!"Completely ignoring him, Christina fixed her eyes on Eli's sinking body. After swimming desperately toward him, she found that he was barely conscious. She patted his face multiple times, crying out, "Eli! Just hang in there a little longer. I'll get you back to shore. Don't fall asleep!"Eli looked at her, but he couldn't respond.Christina's heart clenched. She pulled him onto her back and struggled to swim toward shore. It was an extremely difficult task. She was carrying the weight of a grown man, and her thigh was injured. There were multiple times when she thought she wouldn't be able to hold on and that the two of them would sink together.Watching from the shore, Jason was both furio

Christina's expression stiffened. Remembering how Jason had conspired with Edna to drug her, she finally realized that perhaps she didn't know Jason as well as she thought she did. After a moment, she said with some difficulty, "I'm aware of it. I just thought he was only infatuated with me because he's young. But don't worry. I've made things clear to him. He and I won't have anything to do with each other from now on."As for my family, I've already warned my mother. If you don't want to see them, you never have to go back to Foley Manor again. You'll never have to worry about what they think. Once we get married again, we'll be as happy as we were before."She looked at Eli earnestly, but he simply shook his head bitterly. "Christina, our relationship will never go back to the way it was once."There was a time when he'd clung to the past. He'd been desperate to make her see the truth about Jason. He'd repeatedly explained himself to her until his voice was hoarse. He'd even arg

Eli stepped forward and frowned at Christina, asking, "What are you doing here?"Christina's eyes were filled with intense emotion as she declared, "I'm here to take you home."Irene pulled Eli behind her protectively. Her hair was graying, and her eyes were slightly red as she looked at Christina."Ms. Foley, we don't know what happened between you and Eli, but I do know that my son has been hurt. He told us that you two have gotten a divorce. He isn't leaving with you. We won't accept your gifts either. Please leave."The neighbors gasped and started muttering among themselves."They're divorced?""They've only been married a few years. Why have they divorced already?""That's how it is with rich people. Maybe she cheated on him.""I knew it. Being the son-in-law of a wealthy family isn't easy. Look at Eli! Since he came back, he's been staying home all day, and he looks miserable."Christina's heart clenched with pain, and she hurriedly clarified, "I didn't cheat on him. El

After Christina was rushed into the operating room, Edna stood in the hallway, feeling drained. Once she recalled the sight of Christina covered in blood, she cast an impatient glance at Jason."This ends here. You asked me to help you, and I did, but look what happened! My daughter has ended up in the operating room! I may not like Eli, Jason, but I care more about not losing my daughter."Even after everything, Christina still doesn't want to be with you. So just give it up."Jason whipped his head toward her. Seeing the determination in her eyes, he could only grit his teeth and nod. "Got it."Deep down, however, he was still consumed by resentment. He looked up at the red light over the operating room, indicating that a surgery was ongoing. His gaze became a little manic. His body trembled, and his nails almost dug into his palms. He thought to himself, "This is all Eli's fault! It's all because of that worthless loser that Christina won't even look at me! I've tried everythin

The feeling was both foreign and strangely familiar, and it came on with alarming force. Christina abruptly turned to look at Edna, her gaze falling on the teacup Edna handed her earlier."What did you do?"Edna scoffed. "I'm doing this for your own good! The nerve of you to disregard your own mother for some man! If I let you carry on like this, soon enough, you won't even have any respect for your father and me."She turned to the bodyguards and commanded, "Take Christina to her room."Since Christina had been coming to Foley Manor, she hadn't brought her own bodyguards with her. Therefore, the bodyguards at Foley Manor were able to seize her easily and drag her upstairs. She didn't make the pointless attempt to struggle. She simply stared coldly at Edna. The look in her eyes stung Edna, who looked away but stubbornly declared, "Once you two have slept together, you'll have no choice but to accept it."Christina's eyes flashed with mockery. She was shoved into the bedroom, and
