Eli Jefferson decides to go to the shopping mall to buy a present for his son, Zachary Foley, who is about to celebrate his first birthday. Alas, once again, he runs into Jason Snider, who causes a scene, calling him a homewrecker and beating him up. To keep Zachary out of harm's way, Eli is forced to endure the beating without fighting back. Jason pummels him until he's covered in bruises and almost breaks a few of his bones. In the end, Eli has no choice but to call the police. Both men are taken to the police station—and both claim to be the husband of Christina Foley. The police officer calls Christina to verify their claims. When Jason hears that Christina will be coming down to the police station herself, he immediately starts straightening his hair and shirt. Then he shoots a smug look at Eli. "Say, Eli, do you think Christina will choose to save me by telling the police that I'm her husband? I think she will."

Chapter 1

Jason Snider and Christina Foley had known each other since they were babies. The two of them grew up together before Jason went abroad several years ago.

Two years ago, Jason returned to the country. When he learned that Christina had secretly married Eli Jefferson, he used his position as her childhood friend to target Eli constantly.

Eli fought with Christina over it, but Christina always said she regarded Jason as a younger brother and that Eli should be more generous and considerate toward Jason, who was younger than him.

Cradling his sleeping son, Zachary Foley, in his arms, Eli didn't bother responding to Jason's question. He simply kept his eyes fixed on the entrance to the police station.

Christina arrived in no time. The moment her slender, graceful figure appeared at the police station, she drew everyone's attention.

However, she didn't even spare Eli or Zachary a glance and walked straight toward Jason. "Jason! Are you okay?"

Jason shot Eli a smug look before rising from his chair and pulling Christina into his arms. "Christy! You're finally here! I almost thought I was going to end up in jail."

Christina wrapped her arms around him as well, assuring him, "There, there. I'm here now. Everything's going to be fine."

The police officer standing nearby said politely, "So Mr. Snider is your husband, Ms. Foley! That man with the child sounded so convincing earlier. Who would've thought he was a fraud?"

Only then did Christina look at Eli, who stood in the corner, but her gaze made it seem as though she were looking at a stranger.

After glancing at him, she withdrew her gaze and said to the police officer, "I'm taking my husband away now."

When she took Jason's hand and turned to leave, Eli called out in a hoarse voice, "Wait."

He opened his bag, took out their marriage certificate, and handed it to the police officer. "Here's the marriage certificate proving that I'm married to Christina Foley. Feel free to run the details through the system to check and see if it's valid."

Jason's face went pale, and he turned to Christina. "Christy…"

Christina's brows furrowed slightly. Before the police officer could reach for the marriage certificate, she snatched it away and tore it to shreds without any hesitation, throwing the pieces onto the floor.

"It's fake," she declared.

Eli stared dazedly at the scraps of paper on the floor. In disbelief, he looked at Christina.

Meanwhile, Jason took Christina's hand. Barely able to suppress his laughter, he remarked, "This man here is just an entry-level employee at Foley Corporation. He spends all his time dreaming about marrying into a wealthy family!

"A few months ago, he was fired because he kept harassing Christina with messages declaring his love for her. Everyone at the company knows about it. I never thought he'd do something this crazy. Not only is he trying to claim that this bastard child is hers, but he even came up with a fake marriage certificate!"

The police officer frowned at Eli. "You prepared a fake marriage certificate just to pretend to be Ms. Foley's husband? Don't you know that falsifying documents is a crime? Ms. Foley is the daughter of the Foley family! How dare you try to latch onto her like that?"

However, Eli stubbornly kept his eyes fixed on Christina. "You really think the marriage certificate is fake, Christina?"

Without bothering to reply, Christina took the gloating Jason by the hand and left.

Eli watched in silence as they walked away, his fists clenching tightly.

Since he had a young child with him, the police simply made him write out a three-thousand-word statement admitting to his wrongdoing and pledging not to repeat it before letting him go.

When Eli walked out of the police station, he immediately saw Christina's car parked by the roadside. Seeing how pale he was, she reached out, seemingly wanting to touch his face. He turned his face away, avoiding her touch.

Her expression stiffened, and even her explanation sounded more like a reprimand.

"I've told you before that our marriage has to remain a secret, so we need to keep a low profile. You shouldn't have taken things this far with Jason and caused a scene at the police station, forcing me to acknowledge your identity in front of everyone.

"Jason is innocent. I couldn't let him be detained just because of you and Zach, so I had no choice but to let you and Zach suffer a little. Come on. Let's go home now."

She reached out to take Zachary from Eli, but he stepped backward.

Christina couldn't bear to see her precious childhood friend detained, yet she was perfectly willing to let her husband spend hours trapped at a police station with their son, who was almost one year old. She didn't even mind that Jason had called Zachary a bastard.

Eli's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Christina, let's get a divorce."
