Chapter 3

Author: Three salaries
It was a full seven days before Christina came home with a gift box and a few bags of pastries. Jason was right behind her.

This had become a common occurrence ever since Jason returned to the country.

Eli and Christina often argued and gave each other the silent treatment because of Jason. Christina would always leave him alone for a while, then show up a few days later as if nothing had happened, casually brushing aside whatever they had fought about.

This time, she had the same perfunctory expression as she said, "You did suffer a little because of what happened the last time. I brought Jason here today so he could apologize to you in person."

She gave Jason a look.

There was a hint of resentment in his eyes, but he still cooperatively nodded at Eli. "Sorry about what I did last time, Eli. I shouldn't have called you a homewrecker, and I definitely shouldn't have hit you. I was just joking around with you. So here I am, apologizing to you. I'm sorry. Are you satisfied now?"

Even though he apologized, there wasn't a trace of remorse in his eyes. In fact, while Christina wasn't looking, he silently mouthed the word "loser" at Eli.

Christina took the opportunity to stuff the gift box into Eli's arms and made the bare minimum effort to placate him.

Her tone was dismissive as she said, "That's enough. Jason already apologized, and it was just a small matter. You've had several days to cool off, so you should be over it by now. Go withdraw the divorce petition by yourself later.

"You like the pastries from Rivervale, right? I made sure to get you a whole selection during my business trip. Go ahead and try them."

She started opening up the boxes of pastries, only for Eli to find that several bites had been taken out of every single one of them. All of the best parts had been picked out and eaten.

Jason grinned cheerily, saying, "Whoops. Sorry about that, Christy. I was hungry on the drive over, so I tried a bit of everything. Eli is such a thoughtful and generous man. I'm sure he won't mind eating my leftovers."

Christina shot Jason an exasperated yet affectionate look before turning to Eli. "You couldn't have finished all the pastries by yourself anyway. It doesn't matter that he took a few bites first."

Eli didn't argue. He simply threw the gift box into the trash can, then pointed at the pastries on the table and instructed the maid, "Throw all those leftovers away as well."

The maid didn't dare move.

Christina's expression, however, darkened completely. "Eli, are you really going to keep throwing a tantrum?"

Eli's lips curled mockingly. "If this counts as throwing a tantrum, then yes."

He didn't want to look at Christina and Jason anymore, so he turned to leave. Christina called out behind him, her voice icy.

"I'm giving you one last chance, Eli. Take the gift, eat the pastries, and withdraw the divorce petition yourself. I can pretend none of this ever happened. But if you refuse to accept my olive branch, once you regret it, it'll be too late. You won't be getting another chance."

Eli didn't even stop in his tracks as he retorted, "Thank you for the kind offer, Ms. Foley, but save it for someone who wants it."

Christina scoffed before turning to Jason. "My family's having a family dinner this evening. You're coming with me."

Jason's expression lit up. "Me? But it's a family dinner, Christy. Who am I to join an occasion like that?"

Christina took his arm and declared sweetly, "You'll join as my future husband, of course."

Eli turned back around in disbelief, but Christina's eyes remained fixed on Jason. "Jason, Eli and I are getting divorced. Will you marry me?"

Jason gave Eli a smug look before answering without hesitation, "Yes! I will!"

Christina turned back to look at Eli's pale face. "You're the one who wanted a divorce, aren't you? Who I marry after the divorce is none of your business, is it?"

Eli's voice was slightly hoarse as he replied, "That's right. You're free to marry whoever you want after the divorce, Ms. Foley. It's none of my business, and I'm not interested in caring, either."

Christina stared hard at him before suddenly grabbing Jason and striding out, leaving him with one final message.

"You'd better not regret this, Eli!"

Christina's wounded leg was inflamed, so she was hospitalized once more. Eli was also taken to the hospital for a medical examination.Early the next morning, Gracie sent Christina all the information she'd uncovered. Christina took a deep breath before opening the file. The more she read, the paler her face became.Jason had deliberately attacked Eli in public and labeled him a homewrecker. He claimed that Eli had purposely flaunted their marriage in front of him, but that wasn't true at all.As for the time Eli was suspected of stealing something at an event, Jason had orchestrated that, too.Jason had taken screenshots of the chat logs that had been circulated throughout the company from Eli's phone. Eli had never deliberately sent them to Jason to show off, prompting Jason to retaliate out of spite, as he had claimed. The allergic reaction Jason had was another one of his schemes. He'd secretly used Christina's phone to transfer the money to the maid. He'd even staged the tim

Christina jumped into the water and swam toward Eli like a woman possessed.Up on the shore, Jason was stunned. The moment he saw Christina, his eyes flashed with panic."Christy! What are you doing here? Are you insane? Get out of the water at once! It's dangerous to swim in a reservoir!"Completely ignoring him, Christina fixed her eyes on Eli's sinking body. After swimming desperately toward him, she found that he was barely conscious. She patted his face multiple times, crying out, "Eli! Just hang in there a little longer. I'll get you back to shore. Don't fall asleep!"Eli looked at her, but he couldn't respond.Christina's heart clenched. She pulled him onto her back and struggled to swim toward shore. It was an extremely difficult task. She was carrying the weight of a grown man, and her thigh was injured. There were multiple times when she thought she wouldn't be able to hold on and that the two of them would sink together.Watching from the shore, Jason was both furio

Christina's expression stiffened. Remembering how Jason had conspired with Edna to drug her, she finally realized that perhaps she didn't know Jason as well as she thought she did. After a moment, she said with some difficulty, "I'm aware of it. I just thought he was only infatuated with me because he's young. But don't worry. I've made things clear to him. He and I won't have anything to do with each other from now on."As for my family, I've already warned my mother. If you don't want to see them, you never have to go back to Foley Manor again. You'll never have to worry about what they think. Once we get married again, we'll be as happy as we were before."She looked at Eli earnestly, but he simply shook his head bitterly. "Christina, our relationship will never go back to the way it was once."There was a time when he'd clung to the past. He'd been desperate to make her see the truth about Jason. He'd repeatedly explained himself to her until his voice was hoarse. He'd even arg

Eli stepped forward and frowned at Christina, asking, "What are you doing here?"Christina's eyes were filled with intense emotion as she declared, "I'm here to take you home."Irene pulled Eli behind her protectively. Her hair was graying, and her eyes were slightly red as she looked at Christina."Ms. Foley, we don't know what happened between you and Eli, but I do know that my son has been hurt. He told us that you two have gotten a divorce. He isn't leaving with you. We won't accept your gifts either. Please leave."The neighbors gasped and started muttering among themselves."They're divorced?""They've only been married a few years. Why have they divorced already?""That's how it is with rich people. Maybe she cheated on him.""I knew it. Being the son-in-law of a wealthy family isn't easy. Look at Eli! Since he came back, he's been staying home all day, and he looks miserable."Christina's heart clenched with pain, and she hurriedly clarified, "I didn't cheat on him. El

After Christina was rushed into the operating room, Edna stood in the hallway, feeling drained. Once she recalled the sight of Christina covered in blood, she cast an impatient glance at Jason."This ends here. You asked me to help you, and I did, but look what happened! My daughter has ended up in the operating room! I may not like Eli, Jason, but I care more about not losing my daughter."Even after everything, Christina still doesn't want to be with you. So just give it up."Jason whipped his head toward her. Seeing the determination in her eyes, he could only grit his teeth and nod. "Got it."Deep down, however, he was still consumed by resentment. He looked up at the red light over the operating room, indicating that a surgery was ongoing. His gaze became a little manic. His body trembled, and his nails almost dug into his palms. He thought to himself, "This is all Eli's fault! It's all because of that worthless loser that Christina won't even look at me! I've tried everythin

The feeling was both foreign and strangely familiar, and it came on with alarming force. Christina abruptly turned to look at Edna, her gaze falling on the teacup Edna handed her earlier."What did you do?"Edna scoffed. "I'm doing this for your own good! The nerve of you to disregard your own mother for some man! If I let you carry on like this, soon enough, you won't even have any respect for your father and me."She turned to the bodyguards and commanded, "Take Christina to her room."Since Christina had been coming to Foley Manor, she hadn't brought her own bodyguards with her. Therefore, the bodyguards at Foley Manor were able to seize her easily and drag her upstairs. She didn't make the pointless attempt to struggle. She simply stared coldly at Edna. The look in her eyes stung Edna, who looked away but stubbornly declared, "Once you two have slept together, you'll have no choice but to accept it."Christina's eyes flashed with mockery. She was shoved into the bedroom, and
