Chapter 4

Author: Three salaries
The door slammed shut behind Christina and Jason, the sound echoing in the house. Eli looked down at the long scar running along his right arm, momentarily lost in thought.

His marriage to Christina had only happened as a result of an accident.

Three years ago, someone had been out to get Christina. She'd gotten into a car accident that left her life hanging by a thread. Eli happened to be passing by and witnessed the accident. He pulled her out of the car and called 911.

When he was rescuing her, his right arm had been cut by the car door, creating a long, deep gash. The scar it left behind would never fade completely.

After Christina was discharged from the hospital, she went to great lengths to find him and spent an entire year pursuing him.

Whenever he ran into trouble at work, she would immediately help him sort things out, find the information he needed, and patiently stay by his side to solve all the issues with him.

When Eli's mother, Irene Moore, fell and injured her leg, Christina rushed to take her to the hospital the moment she found out and personally stayed at Irene's bedside to care for her.

Even when Eli was sick with nothing more than an ordinary cold and fever, the usually composed Christina would get so flustered that she worried herself silly. She would insist on keeping an eye on him all night until his fever broke.

After they got married, even though the Foleys had never approved of him, she'd loved him and protected him. They also had an adorable son together, and their lives were blissful.

However, everything changed when Jason returned to the country. One word from him was all it took for Christina to abandon Eli and go running to Jason, and it happened on a regular basis. It was also a common occurrence for Jason to set up Eli and cause fights between him and Christina.

Sighing, Eli composed his emotions and went upstairs. He put Zachary to bed before lying down beside him and falling asleep himself.

Suddenly, the door flew open. Eli looked up in shock, only to meet Christina's raging eyes. She grabbed him by the arm and dragged him out of the house. "You're coming with me!"

Afraid that Zachary might get hurt if he stumbled and fell, Eli had no choice but to stagger along behind her. "What on earth is going on, Christina? Where are you taking me?"

Christina sneered. "What? You're telling me you don't know what happened?"

She shoved him into the car, and before long, it was racing down the road at breakneck speed.

Eli was terrified, his heart in his throat as he held Zachary tightly.

"Christina! Have you lost your mind? Our son is in the car! Stop the car! I want to get out! Let me out!"

Christina ignored him and drove all the way to Foley Manor.

Throughout his entire relationship with Christina, Eli had only been to Foley Manor once. Edna Creed, Christina's mother, scorned him and deliberately made life difficult for him.

At the time, Christina had gotten into a huge fight with Edna and told him he would never have to come back to this house again. Now, she angrily grabbed his hand and dragged him inside.

Only then did Eli realize that almost the entire Foley family was gathered there, and Jason's face was covered in red welts. Edna was beside him, patiently consoling him.

The moment Eli appeared, everyone glared daggers at him. Edna even charged straight at him and slapped him across the face.

"You disgusting bastard! Christina only brought Jason home for dinner. How could you deliberately set him up and make him have an allergic reaction?"

The slap sent Eli stumbling. His cheek was numb and throbbing with pain.

He instinctively looked at Christina. "I didn't! I've only been to this house once. I don't even know my way around the place, much less what your family dinners are like. How could I have set him up?"

However, she continued to eye him coldly. It was clear she didn't believe a word he said.

Eli's back went cold.

"Don't be so humble," Edna snapped with a sneer. "Is there anything you can't do?"

Jason, who was clutching his face, glared at Eli resentfully.

"How dare you deny it now, Eli? The maid already confessed to everything! You paid her 100 thousand dollars to switch the cake I was supposed to eat with one filled with mango! You know I'm allergic to mango. You were trying to kill me!"

"What evidence do you have to prove that I did it?" Eli countered.

Scoffing, Jason shoved his phone screen in front of him.

"The maid showed us the records proving that you paid her off! You used the bank account Christina gave you access to. Don't tell me you're going to claim Christina paid the maid to frame you?"

Eli had no means of defending himself. "It wasn't me! I only used the money from that account to buy things for Zach!"

Edna turned to Christina.

"Christina, I told you from the start that you shouldn't marry a penniless man like him, but you insisted. Now look at what he's done!

"If we hadn't happened to have a fast-acting allergy medication with us just now, we would've had to rush Jason to the hospital. And if something had really happened to him, how would we have answered to his family for it?

"Eli is your husband. You tell us what to do with him."

After two seconds of silence, Christina declared, "Since you made a mistake, you should be punished for it. Kneel outside the house with Zach. You can only get up when Jason's welts subside."

Christina's wounded leg was inflamed, so she was hospitalized once more. Eli was also taken to the hospital for a medical examination.Early the next morning, Gracie sent Christina all the information she'd uncovered. Christina took a deep breath before opening the file. The more she read, the paler her face became.Jason had deliberately attacked Eli in public and labeled him a homewrecker. He claimed that Eli had purposely flaunted their marriage in front of him, but that wasn't true at all.As for the time Eli was suspected of stealing something at an event, Jason had orchestrated that, too.Jason had taken screenshots of the chat logs that had been circulated throughout the company from Eli's phone. Eli had never deliberately sent them to Jason to show off, prompting Jason to retaliate out of spite, as he had claimed. The allergic reaction Jason had was another one of his schemes. He'd secretly used Christina's phone to transfer the money to the maid. He'd even staged the tim

Christina jumped into the water and swam toward Eli like a woman possessed.Up on the shore, Jason was stunned. The moment he saw Christina, his eyes flashed with panic."Christy! What are you doing here? Are you insane? Get out of the water at once! It's dangerous to swim in a reservoir!"Completely ignoring him, Christina fixed her eyes on Eli's sinking body. After swimming desperately toward him, she found that he was barely conscious. She patted his face multiple times, crying out, "Eli! Just hang in there a little longer. I'll get you back to shore. Don't fall asleep!"Eli looked at her, but he couldn't respond.Christina's heart clenched. She pulled him onto her back and struggled to swim toward shore. It was an extremely difficult task. She was carrying the weight of a grown man, and her thigh was injured. There were multiple times when she thought she wouldn't be able to hold on and that the two of them would sink together.Watching from the shore, Jason was both furio

Christina's expression stiffened. Remembering how Jason had conspired with Edna to drug her, she finally realized that perhaps she didn't know Jason as well as she thought she did. After a moment, she said with some difficulty, "I'm aware of it. I just thought he was only infatuated with me because he's young. But don't worry. I've made things clear to him. He and I won't have anything to do with each other from now on."As for my family, I've already warned my mother. If you don't want to see them, you never have to go back to Foley Manor again. You'll never have to worry about what they think. Once we get married again, we'll be as happy as we were before."She looked at Eli earnestly, but he simply shook his head bitterly. "Christina, our relationship will never go back to the way it was once."There was a time when he'd clung to the past. He'd been desperate to make her see the truth about Jason. He'd repeatedly explained himself to her until his voice was hoarse. He'd even arg

Eli stepped forward and frowned at Christina, asking, "What are you doing here?"Christina's eyes were filled with intense emotion as she declared, "I'm here to take you home."Irene pulled Eli behind her protectively. Her hair was graying, and her eyes were slightly red as she looked at Christina."Ms. Foley, we don't know what happened between you and Eli, but I do know that my son has been hurt. He told us that you two have gotten a divorce. He isn't leaving with you. We won't accept your gifts either. Please leave."The neighbors gasped and started muttering among themselves."They're divorced?""They've only been married a few years. Why have they divorced already?""That's how it is with rich people. Maybe she cheated on him.""I knew it. Being the son-in-law of a wealthy family isn't easy. Look at Eli! Since he came back, he's been staying home all day, and he looks miserable."Christina's heart clenched with pain, and she hurriedly clarified, "I didn't cheat on him. El

After Christina was rushed into the operating room, Edna stood in the hallway, feeling drained. Once she recalled the sight of Christina covered in blood, she cast an impatient glance at Jason."This ends here. You asked me to help you, and I did, but look what happened! My daughter has ended up in the operating room! I may not like Eli, Jason, but I care more about not losing my daughter."Even after everything, Christina still doesn't want to be with you. So just give it up."Jason whipped his head toward her. Seeing the determination in her eyes, he could only grit his teeth and nod. "Got it."Deep down, however, he was still consumed by resentment. He looked up at the red light over the operating room, indicating that a surgery was ongoing. His gaze became a little manic. His body trembled, and his nails almost dug into his palms. He thought to himself, "This is all Eli's fault! It's all because of that worthless loser that Christina won't even look at me! I've tried everythin

The feeling was both foreign and strangely familiar, and it came on with alarming force. Christina abruptly turned to look at Edna, her gaze falling on the teacup Edna handed her earlier."What did you do?"Edna scoffed. "I'm doing this for your own good! The nerve of you to disregard your own mother for some man! If I let you carry on like this, soon enough, you won't even have any respect for your father and me."She turned to the bodyguards and commanded, "Take Christina to her room."Since Christina had been coming to Foley Manor, she hadn't brought her own bodyguards with her. Therefore, the bodyguards at Foley Manor were able to seize her easily and drag her upstairs. She didn't make the pointless attempt to struggle. She simply stared coldly at Edna. The look in her eyes stung Edna, who looked away but stubbornly declared, "Once you two have slept together, you'll have no choice but to accept it."Christina's eyes flashed with mockery. She was shoved into the bedroom, and
