Chapter 4

Author: Never Spring
"W-what are you talking about?"

Zachary forced a miserable smile, his panicked gaze darting toward Gwen. "What do you mean, stolen? Keira's heart... a kind person donated it."

Gwen recovered and stepped in front of Zachary, her face dark with anger. "Honey! Are you so lost in grief that you're talking nonsense now? It's Keira's birthday. Don't make a scene!"

"A scene?"

I chuckled, glanced at the broken glass, and leisurely straightened my collar. "I was only joking. Look how frightened you both are. Can't anyone take a joke these days?"

I bent down, picked up the toy pistol Keira dropped, and tried to press it back into her hands, my voice chillingly gentle. "Take it, Keira. I was just joking."

Keira shrank from my gaze and hid behind Zachary, refusing to take it.

Gwen grabbed my wrist hard enough to hurt. "Enough. You're obviously exhausted and not in a good state of mind. Let's go home."

"We haven't eaten yet."

I pulled free and sat at the dining table. "You made all this food. It would be a shame to waste it. Besides, I'd like to hear how you finally found that 'kind donor,' Zachary."

Zachary swayed and looked to Gwen for help.

Gwen gritted her teeth and reluctantly sat down. She put a rib on my plate. "Just eat. Then we're leaving."

The food tasted like cardboard.

During the meal, I deliberately acted distracted.

Every so often, I placed food in front of the empty chair beside me and murmured, "Jade, have some of this. It's your favorite steak."

"Jade, don't run so fast. You might fall."

"Jade, does your heart hurt? Let me rub it for you..."

Every time I spoke, Zachary's hand shook. A vein throbbed at Gwen's temple. Several times, she nearly lost her temper, but held back because we were at Zachary's house.

Halfway through the meal, I suddenly put down my fork and looked at Gwen seriously. "Gwen, I dreamed about Jade last night."

Gwen's guilty conscience and my erratic behavior left her on edge. "What did you dream this time?"

"She told me she's so cold down there. There's a big hole in her chest, and it won't stop bleeding."

I lowered my voice to an ominous murmur. "She also said someone gave her a peach. That person had a scar on their hand."

Gwen instinctively pulled back her left hand. A faint scar marked the skin between her thumb and index finger. She cut herself there while chopping vegetables as a child.

  • My Wife Killed Our Daughter to Save Her First Love’s Child   Chapter 10

Seven years later.I returned to visit my daughter's grave. It was the depths of winter, and snow fell heavily.I wore a thick coat. Just after leaving a shopping mall, I noticed a crowd gathered in a sheltered spot beside the road."It's awful. That madman's stealing food from children again.""Stay away. I heard he has something contagious. They just released him from prison for medical treatment."The mention of a medical release made me stop almost without thinking.Through a gap in the crowd, I saw a beggar in ragged clothes. He was missing a leg and huddled in tattered bedding. His hair was a tangled mess of dry straw, and his face was covered in sores from the cold and grime. He clutched a filthy, battered doll and muttered obsessively, "Be good, Keira. Have some meat... Daddy stole some meat for you..."At first, I didn't recognize him.As if he sensed my gaze, Zachary slowly looked up.His cloudy eyes suddenly fixed on me.For several seconds, he stared. Then his vacant gaze f

On the day I left the city, I went to see Gwen."Honey..." Her voice was hoarse and pleading. "How's Keira? Is... is she still alive?"Even now, all she cared about was that bastard child.I stood and looked at her coldly, making each word clear. "She's dead."Gwen shuddered, her eyes widened sharply. She slumped in the visiting chair as if every bone in her body dissolved."What did you say? Impossible! She got a new heart! Jade's heart! Jade's heart was healthy!" she screamed incoherently. Her hands clawed frantically at the soundproof glass, her nails making a piercing screech."Yes. Jade's heart was healthy." I looked through the glass at the woman who once shared my bed. All I felt was a cold indifference that almost resembled pity. "But Gwen, did you forget? Hearts have memories too. It recognizes the father who loved Jade, and the murderer who killed her.""At the birthday party, Keira suffered acute transplant rejection. The doctors fought to save her around the clock for th

The banquet hall descended into chaos.Keira convulsed on the floor, her face frighteningly swollen and purple. Zachary knelt beside her, his clothes disheveled, and howled for help. "An ambulance! Call an ambulance! My Keira! My little girl!"The police pinned Gwen to the floor. At Zachary's cries, she desperately turned her head, her eyes full of terror and despair. "Keira! Get a doctor! Save Keira!"The sight of her anguish was bitterly ironic. To save her secret daughter, she willingly killed her own flesh and blood. Now karma returned like a boomerang, striking her where it hurt most. The ambulance arrived quickly, and paramedics rushed in with a stretcher. As they passed me, I clearly saw Keira's little face contorted from lack of oxygen. The police held Zachary back, but he still tried to throw himself toward the stretcher. "I'm her father! Let me go! I need to be with her!""Take him away!" the lead officer snapped, cuffing him without hesitation.Gwen was hauled to her feet

Gwen seemed to realize something and reached for the microphone. "Honey! You're drunk! Get off the stage!"I turned aside to avoid her hand and pressed the remote. The large screen behind me was showing happy photographs of Gwen's family. It flickered, then switched to blurry surveillance footage. It showed the ICU corridor three years earlier. In the video, Gwen slipped furtively into the room and came out five minutes later.Immediately afterward, doctors rushed inside and pronounced my daughter dead. The room erupted."What is this?""Isn't that Gwen? What is she doing?"Gwen lunged frantically toward the controls. "Turn it off! Turn it off! It's fake! It's edited!"I kicked her knee, sending her crashing to her knees. Then I pressed the remote again. The screen displayed the Organ Transplant Compatibility Report and my daughter's death certificate. Finally, the recording of Gwen's call with Lisa in the car that day echoed clearly through the banquet hall."Three years ago, you took

I put away my phone and walked toward Gwen with a smile as she waited at the registration desk."Honey, are we checked in? I can't wait to see the doctor."Gwen quickly put on a concerned smile when she saw me. "Yes, honey. Let's go."I linked my arm through hers and felt how tense her muscles still were."What did Dr. Shaw say to you just now? You don't look well," I asked deliberately."N-nothing." Gwen's gaze shifted. "We just discussed your condition. She said you'll get better soon if you cooperate with the treatment.""That's good." I smiled obediently. "I'll do anything to get better. By the way, isn't your mother's sixtieth birthday next week? Shouldn't we plan a proper celebration?"Gwen clearly didn't expect that. After a moment of surprise, she nodded eagerly. "Yes, absolutely! Mom's birthday is a big occasion. We should go all out! It'll give our friends and relatives a chance to see how well you're doing, so they can stop worrying."She probably thought she had me under

Zachary went deathly pale. His spoon fell into his bowl, splashing soup across the table."I... I'll get a cloth from the kitchen." He scrambled to his feet and rushed away as if fleeing.Gwen couldn't sit still any longer. She stood abruptly and pulled me up. "Enough! You're seriously unwell! I'm taking you to a psychologist right now!"When we got home, Gwen immediately booked an appointment with a mental health specialist.I watched her anxiously making calls on the balcony, sneered, and slipped a miniature listening device into the bag she left on the couch. That night, I deliberately sharpened a knife in the bedroom. The rasp of the blade sounded especially harsh in the silence of the night.Gwen opened the door and found me holding a kitchen knife, staring blankly as I made slicing motions through the air. Her face drained of color."Honey, what are you doing?""I'm peeling an apple for Jade." I tilted my head toward her, pretending to hold an apple that wasn't there. "Look how
