Chapter 2

Author: NJ Boss
I turned my head stiffly. I tensed up when I saw the woman at the door.

She wore an off-white cashmere coat. Her makeup was delicately done. Her hair was permed in a stylish curl.

She was my wife, Sloane, whom I had missed dearly for over thirty years.

The man beside her wore a dark gray suit with a tie. His hair was meticulously combed.

I recognized him at once. It was Wallace.

Back in the day, he was a loafer in the neighborhood. He often stole things and harassed widows. He even served two years in prison.

When Aiden saw them, he rushed over and sweetly called out, “Grandma! Grandpa!”

Lily also stepped forward to greet them.

They gathered together affectionately. I stood off to the side, like a complete outsider.

Sloane glanced at me and casually instructed, “What are you standing there for? Make more food. Do you think this is enough for everyone?”

I stared at her.

My voice came out hoarse as I asked, “Sloane, don’t you have anything to say to me? Anything to explain?”

“Explain what?”

Sloane rolled her eyes impatiently.

“It’s a happy family reunion. Why bring up the past? Do you want to ruin the mood? You’re seventy years old. Why do you keep looking for things to be miserable about? Who do you think is going to put up with you?”

Aiden kicked my stool over.

“Get in the kitchen and cook, you freak! Uncle Wallace has a weak stomach. He can’t be left hungry!”

Lily patted Aiden’s hair proudly.

“Look at you, such a good kid. Don’t ever grow up like that lame old man. He’s old, ugly, and he can’t even speak our language. No one wants anything to do with him. Now look at Grandpa Wallace. He’s dignified, successful, and well-off. That’s who you should look up to.”

Aiden grew even more smug. He hugged Wallace’s leg.

“I don’t want that ugly grandpa! Grandpa Wallace is my real grandpa. He’s handsome and buys me toys. He’s a hundred times better!”

Wallace was on cloud nine. He smiled and took out an exquisite pocket watch.

“Good boy. This is a Swiss pocket watch. Grandpa brought it just for you.”

Aiden excitedly examined it.

Wayne quickly said, “Say thank you. You have to know your manners when someone gives you something expensive.”

Aiden swiftly thanked Wallace sweetly.

“Ah, my sweet grandchild.”

When I saw this, I became so furious that I lost my composure. I violently flipped the table over.

“Nobody eats!”

Plates shattered on the floor. Gravy and soup splashed onto Sloane’s cashmere coat.

She screamed, “Alvin, are you out of your mind?! This coat costs a fortune. Can you even afford to replace it?”

Wallace also dropped his smile. His expression darkened.

“Alvin, don’t push your luck. We only came to this dinner for Aiden’s sake. Rather than show gratitude, you would flip the table?”

Wayne rushed over and shoved me.

“Dad! What’s wrong with you? We’re trying to have a nice meal, and you flip the table?”

I was already unsteady with a lame leg. The push made me stumble, nearly causing me to fall.

Instead of feeling guilty, Wayne simply looked annoyed.

“This is what I hate about you. You act like it’s my fault you have a limp!”

My heart turned ice-cold.

I had gone through so much hardship while raising him.

I grabbed a broom handle and swung it at them.

“Get out! All of you, get out of my house! This is my house. I won’t have you all being so disrespectful here!”

After Wayne was sentenced, Lily brought Aiden back and abandoned him with Sloane. But Sloane had already been arrested by then. Aiden had no one to care for him. The community office could only contact me to ask that I take Aiden in.“Alvin, Aiden is your grandson after all. You should take him back. He’s still young. He can’t be left without a legal guardian.”I shook my head.“He’s not my grandson. He stopped being my grandson the moment he pushed me out that window.”In the end, the community had no choice. They sent Aiden to an orphanage.Later, I heard from Zack that Aiden was very withdrawn in the orphanage. He did not play with the other children and rarely spoke. He was completely unlike the arrogant and unruly child he had been when he was abroad.I never went to visit him.It was not because I hated him. I simply felt there was no need. His life was his own to walk, just like his father and his grandmother. They had all chosen their own paths.Sloane was only a mino

Now, you don’t even have a job. How are we supposed to live?”She packed her belongings and said coldly, “Aiden is not going to have a good life staying with you. He is better off with me.”Wayne refused and argued with her.But she was determined to divorce him. In the end, the court made the ruling.Lily had full custody. Wayne was required to pay child support every month. With no job and no wife or child, Wayne had no choice but to live with Sloane. She was already in a bad mood because of what happened with Wallace.Seeing Wayne laze around the house all day doing

After dealing with Sloane, my next target was Wallace.Abraham told me that all these years abroad, Wallace had not done anything legitimate. He had lived off the money he had swindled from Sloane. After returning, he had not changed his ways. He secretly gambled and had racked up a large debt to loan sharks.I contacted Abraham and asked him to help find out which casino Wallace frequented.Abraham had a few comrades who worked at the police station. Within a few days, he had the information.Wallace often went to an underground casino on the outskirts of the city. He had recently owed the casino owner fifty thousand dollars and had been pressed for payment several times.Abraham asked, “Alvin, what do you want to do? Do you want me to just call the cops and have him picked up?”I shook my head.I asked Abraham to spread the news about Wallace’s gambling debt to the neighbors. I also had his comrade at the police station conduct a patrol at the underground casino. The goal wa

I had no intention of letting matters go.I was not some pushover who could be bullied without consequence. They would pay for everything they owed me.I found out that Sloane, relying on the fact that she had been abroad, had opened a retirement community social club nearby.Classes started at 2 p.m. every afternoon. The attendees were mostly middle-aged women from the neighborhood.I reached out to my former comrade, Abraham. After being discharged from the military, he worked at the subdistrict office. He had many connections and access to information.Abraham asked, “Alvin, what do you want to do?“If this thing with Sloane gets blown up, it won’t look good for you either.”I was silent for a moment. Then I said, “It doesn’t matter. I just want her to know that the things she did back then don’t just disappear because she hid them.”Abraham sighed and nodded.“Alright. I’ll reach out to a few of the old neighbors. I’ll also give the building management a heads-up. They h

Wayne was dumbfounded. When he saw a strange man moving items out of the house, he went to stop him.“Who are you? What gives you the right to touch our stuff?!”The buyer was stout and aggressive. He directly grabbed several people and pulled them out of the bedroom.“Your stuff? I bought this house three days ago. The paperwork is all in order. I’m the owner now. Grab your things and get out. Stop holding me up while I’m trying to clean this place.”Sloane was frustrated. She tugged at Wallace’s arm and shouted, “Wallace, say something to him! We’re the ones who own this house. What gives him the right to throw us out?”Wallace cleared his throat.“Sir, you need to do things by the book. When I was overseas—”“Don’t give me that overseas nonsense!” The buyer cut him off.“I paid for this house, so it’s mine. Either leave now, or I’m calling the cops and letting them deal with you for trespassing.”When Wayne called, I was in the hospital room polishing my military medals fro

We sat in silence until evening. When our bodies became sore from sitting too long, we finally prepared to head home.Just then, my neighbor across the hall, Charlotte, hurried over.“Alvin, hurry and get back to your place! Someone’s moving stuff in. There are a ton of people.”I rushed back to find the door lock pried open and the front door wide. The group that had left at noon had returned. Bags and boxes were piled all over the living room.Sloane sat on the couch with Wallace. He held her hand while painting her nails.Nearby, Wayne and Lily were playing with Aiden. When Sloane saw me return, she spoke to me as if I were a housemaid. “I’m hungry. Go make me some pasta.”I laughed in exasperation. “Sure. Give me a second.”I turned and went into the kitchen.I poured soy sauce, vinegar, chili sauce, pepper powder, and everything else into a bowl. Then I carried it out.In the living room, Sloane and Wayne were criticizing me.Wayne said, “He has never done anything wit
