Chapter 7

Autor: Cat Eat Fish
I didn't bother opening Tiffany's message. I read only the first line.

"Andrew, I regret it now."

I turned my phone face down on the desk and went back to reading my research paper.

I ignored her messages, though her calls kept coming late into the night. I didn't block her. Not because I felt sorry for her, but because I saw no need to.

Truly letting go wasn't about blocking someone. It was about no longer leaving a place for them in your heart.

And I'd already let her go.

I stood rooted to the spot in the parking lot, the cold wind stinging my face."Tiffany said she lied to you back then," Kate continued, seeing that I wasn't saying anything. "She kept the baby. She gave birth to a girl."Kate's words echoed in my head, leaving me momentarily stunned.I stood there for a long time before I finally found my voice. "Where is she now?" "This is her current address," Kate said, handing me a note. "She said you're welcome to visit the child if you're willing."I took the note, my fingers stiff and numb. That night, I smoked one cigarette after another until a small pile of cigarette butts had gathered on the balcony.Dad came over and patted me on the shoulder."What's wrong?""Nothing."He glanced at me but didn't press further."Once you've thought it through, go," he simply said. "Don't leave yourself with any regrets."I stubbed out my cigarette and nodded.…The next day, I returned to Noxmere. It'd been three years since I'd last be

Calvin had fled. He'd taken the last payment owed to Tiffany's father's company and left Noxmere in the middle of the night. When the news broke, the whole business industry was in an uproar. My childhood friend, who'd always put on a respectable front while following Tiffany around, had been drowning in debt all along. He'd gotten close to her solely for her family's money. When a friend told me what had happened, he sounded both shocked and disgusted."That bastard really knew how to hide it," he said. "All those years, and we actually treated him like one of our own."I smiled but said nothing. I'd seen it coming, after all. A man who could steal his childhood friend's wife was rotten to the core. But Tiffany had been blind to it, and so had I.Still, none of it had anything to do with me anymore.Meanwhile, Tiffany kept showing up wherever I went, whether outside my office building, at the university entrance, or even at my apartment.Every time, she looked the same—hagg

With the proposal still unapproved, his company couldn't secure the advance payment it was counting on, putting increasing pressure on its finances. He began asking everyone he could think of to put in a good word for him. He approached Dad, my colleagues, and Kate.In the end, after going around in circles, he came back to Tiffany.… That evening, Tiffany showed up drunk outside my apartment building and crouched by the entrance. The security guard called me an

Three days later, the project proposal review meeting took place.Kate had arranged the meeting, and the conference room was packed.I sat at the head of the table, flipping through the documents.Tiffany and Calvin arrived with their team, clearly well prepared. Their presentation was polished, and their proposal was comprehensive. But the more polished everything looked, the more clearly I could see how badly they needed this project. At the end of the presentation, Calvin turned to me, smiling."Dr. Grisham, is there anything you'd like us to revise?"I closed the folder and looked up at them."The budget is inflated," I said. "The data in the third section was outdated last year, yet you're still using it."Calvin's expression shifted.Tiffany glanced down at the documents in her hands, her expression stiffening as well. The conference room fell silent."Revise the proposal and resubmit it in three days," I continued.Calvin's smile faltered."Andrew, it's such a tri

Silence fell over the private dining room. Tiffany's smile froze in place, as though someone had pressed pause.Calvin's reaction was even more obvious. He'd been resting a hand on her arm, but he quickly withdrew it, rubbing his palm against his pant leg twice.Only Kate seemed oblivious to the tension in the room. She was still smiling as she gestured for everyone to take their seats."Dr. Grisham, this is Ms. Kramer, and this is Mr. Sheafe. They're from Noxmere, and their team has a project that ties in directly with yours."I picked up my glass and nodded. I didn't stand up or offer my hand. Tiffany's lips moved, but it took her a long moment to force a smile that was barely holding together."Long time no see."Calvin followed with an awkward smile."Andy," he greeted, his voice noticeably strained. "What a coincidence."I didn't respond to the familiar nickname. We'd been childhood friends for years. Now, he was the man who'd betrayed me by sleeping with my wife. He

I went back to Birchford. I didn't answer Tiffany's calls or reply to any of her messages. On the third day, I had the divorce papers delivered to her office, but she refused to sign them. I knew she was trying to drag things out. Her parents and best friend took turns calling me, all making more or less the same argument. Couples fought all the time, they said, and I couldn't just throw away seven years together. But I ignored every single one of them. Two weeks later, I requested a transfer back to Herville, in Birchford. I'd moved to Noxmere for Tiffany, but now, all I wanted was to return to where I belonged. When Mom saw how much weight I'd lost, she didn't ask any questions. Instead, she made a point of cooking something different for me every day. Dad sat on the balcony, smoking. After a long silence, he finally said, "It's good to have you home."And just like that, I broke down crying like a young boy, despite being a grown man in my 30s. …The divorce procee
