Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
The agitation and lingering effects of my illness sent a stabbing pain through my heart. My vision went black in waves.

In that hellish training camp, there was hunger, humiliation, and endless exhausting workouts. Every single day had been pure torment.

I never wanted to go back, not even for a second.

To avoid returning to that place, I was willing to give up everything, even the last speck of my dignity.

Tanya smiled with satisfaction at the sight of my breakdown. "Looks like you've finally learned your lesson."

She studied me briefly, then shifted her eyes. "That brat is probably still being stubborn in there, refusing to lose enough weight to meet the target, isn't she?

"Since you've lost the weight and admitted your mistakes, why don't you apologize to Harry on her behalf? You can apologize for your own failures as a father while you're at it."

She lifted her chin and gestured toward Harry beside her. "After all, the way you two looked back then was completely unacceptable. You were both such eyesores that you were giving Harry unnecessary trouble."

Of course, I knew she was trying to humiliate me. But if I refused, she would find another excuse to throw me back into that living hell as soon as Grandma's situation was settled.

I was truly terrified.

The bony frame beneath my clothes reminded me of everything I had suffered. Every pang in my heart only deepened my fear.

I had already lost Melanie. I couldn't afford to lose the last bit of freedom I had left.

So, under Tanya's astonished gaze and Harry's mocking smirk, I dropped to my knees and apologized.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Lieberman. I was wrong. I should've disciplined my daughter. I was too fat before, and I offended your eyes. I'm sorry for causing you so much trouble. Please forgive me!"

Somehow, Tanya's expression only darkened. The satisfaction she had felt just moments ago at my successful weight loss and my humiliating apology vanished without a trace.

I had no idea what pissed her off again. All I could do was bow even lower and apologize more desperately, hoping to appease her.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Tanya. I messed up. I know that now. Please, let me go. I'm begging you…"

Pathetic, miserable, and stripped of every last shred of dignity—that was all I was now.

Yet, for some reason, the more submissive I became, the angrier she looked. It was as though my very act of humbling myself was an even greater offense.

"Enough!" Tanya snapped. "Stop apologizing! I'm sick of hearing it!"

Harry gently draped an arm around her shoulders and coaxed her. "Come on, Tanya. Look at you, getting worked up over someone who doesn't know any better. Why bother?"

He glanced at me like I was garbage. "To be fair, the way they looked before was really an eyesore. I only made a couple of offhand remarks about what was obvious.

"But you? You sent them away to straighten them out because you wanted what was best for them. I've long since forgotten that little fight, so don't let it upset you."

Harry turned to me, his tone dripping with condescending magnanimity. "Mr. Curry is a changed man now, isn't he? He's admitted his mistakes and promised to mend his ways. Isn't that what you wanted?"

Tanya seemed appeased. She returned to her usual arrogant self and hummed dismissively. Impatiently, she nudged my calf with the tip of her shoe.

"You are a lot more pleasant to look at now. Fine. Get in the car."

Just as I was about to climb into the car, hunched over, she suddenly remembered something. She whipped around and glared at me, her voice sharp with warning.

"Don't let me find out that all the results you've achieved over the past year and this obedient act of yours are just a performance!

"If Harry hadn't kindly pointed it out back then, I'd still be unaware, letting you two embarrass me everywhere with the way you two looked!"

The crowd burst into a frenzy, instinctively scattering to either side and clearing a path down the middle.A skeletal figure appeared before them, clad in rags, with hair matted like dead grass and a putrid stench rising from his body. He looked like a vengeful demon that had crawled straight out of hell.It was Harry. Somehow, he had managed to escape from the equally brutal training camp Tanya had sent him to.Clutched in his hand was a knife he had gotten from somewhere. Rust covered the blade, yet the light still reflected menacingly against it.Harry fixed his bloodshot eyes on Tanya, who stood at the front of the crowd, just as stunned as everyone else. His face twisted with a grotesque mixture of love, hatred, jealousy, and madness. He advanced toward her step by step, screaming like a madman, "I loved you so much, Tanya! I waited for you for years! Why wouldn't you choose me? Why would you rather marry that worthless loser and even have that bastard with him?"His voice

The last trace of vitality drained from Tanya's face when she heard my words. Gripping my arm, she shook her head violently. "No! We're not divorcing! Bryan, we're not doing that!"As if I were the last lifeline within reach of a drowning person, she clung to my emaciated body, sobbing and pleading incoherently."Can't we start over? Please? I know I messed up—I really do! I'll make it up to you! From now on, I'll treat you right. We'll have another child. I'll love them just as much as I loved Melanie! Please?"I let her hold me, my body as rigid and cold as a stone.Only after her sobs had subsided a little did I speak. My voice was almost cruel in its calmness. "It's too late, Tanya. After everything they did to me at that training camp, I'm already ruined."I didn't spell out what I meant by "I'm already ruined", but the implication was clear enough. I could no longer have sex.Tanya's arms stiffened around me. She looked up at me in disbelief, tears in her eyes. The last gli

When I opened my eyes, my mind was still hazy.Tanya practically threw herself at my bedside, grabbing my arm with a monstrous grip. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with agitation."I know now, Bryan! I know everything!"She shook me violently. "It was Harry! That bastard was behind it all! That son of a bitch was the one pulling the strings! He secretly paid off those people at the training camp to torture you and Melanie!"He worked her to death! He killed Melanie! It was him! It was all him!"Her voice broke with sobs. "Did you hear me? It wasn't me! I swear I never meant for any of this to happen! He deceived me! I was blinded by my own foolishness, and I believed every damn lie he told me!"I had no idea they'd abuse you at that camp! I didn't know Melanie would die!"Tanya seized my shoulders, forcing me to look at her. Tears streamed down her face in fat, glistening drops. "Bryan, look me in the eyes! Please, believe me! I'm begging you!"I know I was wrong—I rea

I lay feverish in my hospital bed, drifting in and out of consciousness. The bleak, oppressive shadows of the training camp kept flashing before my eyes, along with Melanie's face growing paler and more gaunt with each passing day…"Get up!"The hospital room door was shoved open.Tanya strode in, her expression as apathetic as ever. She didn't even spare a glance at my flushed cheeks or my frail condition.Instead, she marched straight to my bedside, grabbed my arm, and yanked me out of bed."Come with me!"Her grip was firm, leaving no room for argument. My head spun from the sudden movement. My body was so weak that I could barely stand, and I slumped helplessly against her grip."Where are we going?""Grandma's dying. She wants to see you one last time."There wasn't a trace of emotion in Tanya's voice, only impatience. She practically dragged me out of my hospital room and hauled me, stumbling, into the ICU where Grandma lay.Grandma lay on the bed, barely clinging to l

I was left alone in the hospital room. I lay back down on the bed and stared blankly at the ceiling. It was a sea of white, so much like Melanie's face when she passed away. After months of brutal training and prolonged starvation, every last trace of color was gone from her cheeks. She lay on that hard, narrow bed, so emaciated that she was little more than skin and bones. Her face was as pale as parchment paper. Even breathing had become a struggle, yet she still summoned the last of her strength to clutch my hand."Dad, I really wish… I could see Mom…" she wheezed, struggling to catch her breath. "I've lost weight. I really have. 30 pounds! Even the instructor said I'm pretty now… If only Mom could see me now… She would finally like me."Choking back my sobs, I nodded. My heart felt as though it was being repeatedly twisted with a knife, but I couldn't utter a word.Melanie looked at me and whispered, "I'm sorry, Dad. I don't think I can stay with you anymore…"She tried to s

It was as if I hadn't heard Tanya's question at all. I stared blankly at the stark white ceiling, stubbornly repeating myself."Don't worry, Tanya. Once we divorce, I'll take it with me and disappear. I swear I won't interfere in your life with Mr. Lieberman ever again. You'll never have to see me—"A vicious slap across my face cut me off mid-sentence.Tanya's eyes were bloodshot. She lunged at me and clamped both hands around my throat, continuing to demand an answer. "I'm asking you what you meant! What ashes? Whose ashes?"She shook my head violently, her voice shrill with fury. "You're vile! How dare you curse Melanie with words like that? Huh? Answer me! Is she such an eyesore to you that you want her dead? Is that it?"Suffocation overwhelmed me instantly. The terror of being on the verge of death haunted me again, more vivid and intense than when my heart failed me earlier.I was too weak to fight back. All I could manage was a few broken sounds as my hands instinctively
