Chapter 2

Kyle shouted, "Andrew, how could you slander Lily like that? She was working overtime in the morgue for the sake of her job and family! You couldn't do it yourself, so you're making malicious assumptions about her, aren't you? How pathetic! You're not even fit to be a man, let alone a mortician!"

I scoffed as I glanced at Lily's pale face. "Sure, Lily's the only person in this world who's fit to be a mortician. No wonder she's still in the morgue late at night every day. But as for whether she's actually working in there, I suppose she herself knows the answer best."

With that, I turned around to leave.

Just then, a commotion rang out from the crowd.

My father-in-law, Mike Tanner, was making his way here with a grave look on his face.

He was one of the veteran leaders of the workplace, and he was distinguished and highly respected.

But at that moment, he was shaking with anger as he pointed a finger at me. "I can't believe how wrong I was about you! Lily is pregnant, but instead of taking care of her at home, you're humiliating her in public!

"She worked overtime into the wee hours of the morning, but when she came back, she even made meals for you. When you had a fever, she stayed right next to your bed and didn't sleep a wink all night. She even pulled all-nighters last year just to organize the materials for your professional title evaluation!

"She did so much for you, but you just had to ruin her in front of everyone on a day like this. Come on, tell us. You've already gotten yourself a mistress, and you've been planning to abandon Lily and her child, haven't you?"

Our colleagues began to whisper among themselves as well.

"Dad, please don't talk about Andrew like that. He doesn't mean it." Lily tried to calm Mike down, but she only cried harder. "It's my fault for being too busy at work and overlooking his feelings. It's only natural that he's upset about it."

Mike glared at me. "My daughter poured her heart and soul into this family, but you're cheating on her! I swear, if you ever dare mention divorce again, I'll drive you out of the Tanner family and make sure you don't get even a single penny from us!"

I looked coldly at Lily, my gaze filled with disappointment as I said, "You're always saying you have to work overtime. You know very well what exactly you're doing in that morgue, don't you?"

Lily was suddenly overwhelmed with emotion as she threw herself at me. "Can we please not get divorced? I know you like Jane Woods from the next office, but our baby will be born soon!"

She sobbed as she shoved at me. Her nails scraped across my arm, leaving behind a few bloody scratches.

I staggered backward, my back bumping into a corner of a table behind me. A dull pain spread throughout my body.

I had suffered an injury in that spot a few months ago. Lily had been mulling over work, and she got distracted while she was driving. I had ended up with that injury when I was saving her from that accident.

Kyle hastily supported Lily, then turned around and glared viciously at me. "How dare you dodge her! Lily is pregnant, for goodness' sake! Aren't you worried that she might get hurt?"

Lily leaned into Kyle's arms, wailing at the top of her lungs, "I knew you don't love me anymore. You're even abandoning our child for the sake of that woman!"

Enduring the pain, I straightened up and said in a cold voice, "No matter what, I'm divorcing you."

Lily whipped her head up. There was a hint of panic in her gaze as she said, "Andrew, please, I can explain! I know I was too worked up just now. I just didn't want to lose you."

Breaking free from Kyle's grasp, she hurried up to me.

She tried to touch my injury, but I dodged her.

Her hand froze in the air, and her eyes instantly reddened. "Andrew, I know Kyle sounded harsh just now, but he's just trying to protect me. He's still young, and he doesn't know any better. Please don't hold it against him."

I scoffed. "It's fine. I just want to get divorced."

Lily bit her lip as tears started streaming down her face again. "Andrew, we've been together for a decade. You said I'm the only person you'd ever cherish for the rest of your life."
