Chapter 2

Author: Sand
I struggled to reach into my pack for dehydration meds, which I hoped might stabilize my condition.

However, the moment I pulled out an oral rehydration packet, Amy slapped me and ripped it from my hand.

“You had this the whole time and didn’t share it? Were you trying to make Ben suffer? How could you be so cruel?”

‘I was cruel?’ I thought as anger and despair boiled inside me.

When we first hit the uninhabited stretch of desert and the heat spiked, they had been too afraid of sunstroke to step out of the car and do the work.

I braved the searing heat—nearly 160 °F—to scout potential resource sites and collect samples and data.

That was how I ended up dehydrated.

Yet, my own wife took away every single thing that might keep me alive, as if my survival meant nothing to her.

I lunged at Ben and punched him.

“You have no right to touch my supplies! You’re out of this team!”

Amy, wedged between us, shrieked as she yanked open the car door behind me and kicked me out.

“Just because you’re the captain doesn’t mean you can do that, Roy!”

The others in the car, startled by the fight, finally spoke up.

However, they were on her side.

“Captain Garner, we all work together! You shouldn’t resort to violence.”

“If you’ve got enough energy to hit someone, you clearly aren’t that dehydrated. Did you really have to snatch things from Ben?”

‘Unbelievable!’ I thought.

I was just taking back my own things. How was I snatching anything away from him?

Unfortunately, I could not even argue.

The sand beneath me was searing, as if I had been tossed into a frying pan.

My vision blurred. My throat was so parched that it felt like it was bleeding.

Behind Amy’s back, Ben shot me a taunting look.

“Maybe I should just return everything to Roy. I don’t mind. As part of the national expedition team, I’m willing to sacrifice myself for the mission.”

Amy slammed the car door shut and sealed most of the blistering heat outside.

“Don’t say that! I won’t let anything happen to you.”

I was left to roast under the desert sun.

I cried out. My throat was so dry that each word felt like shards of glass cutting into it. “That’s rich coming from someone who doesn’t even care if his teammates die! Is this a joke to you?”

Amy rolled the window down and fixed me with a vicious glare.

“Stop insulting Ben! We’re childhood friends! I know exactly what kind of person he is.”

Childhood friends?

That was the same excuse Amy had used when she bent the rules to slip Ben into the expedition team.

Like a fool, I had believed her.

Since when did being a “childhood friend” justify favoring him so much that she would rather let her own husband die?

A ringing filled my ears. I could feel my thoughts slipping away.

Pure survival instinct made me grab for the car window, and I tried to haul myself up.

Amy, however, rolled the window up. My hand was caught between the glass and the frame.

A bolt of pain ripped out a stifled groan from me.

Through the glass, the others watched my misery as if it were entertaining.

“I have to hand it to him. That’s such good acting! The captain should’ve been an actor instead.”

Amy kept rolling the window up.

“Since you love faking dehydration so much, you can stay out there and see what real heatstroke feels like. I don’t buy for a second that a man with special forces training can’t handle this a little more than the rest of us.”

I could not even yell out a plea for help. The pain sent a jolt through me, and I did not want to risk breaking a bone, so I yanked my hand free.

Then I crawled into the sliver of shade cast by the SUV.

However, there was no relief.

The scorching heat was cooking me alive. The fear of death wrapped itself suffocatingly around me.

She asked me what I planned to do if I ever left the military.I told her I wanted to keep serving the country.I told her I wanted to join an expedition team to search for rare resources. That was a form of service, after all.I was kind of glad she did not call me out for sounding so full of myself back then.Even from the hospital bed, I cooperated with the investigation as the primary victim. The police came to take my official statement. They also updated me on Amy and Ben’s situation. After they were taken into custody, they immediately turned on each other. They were each desperate to expose the other’s crimes in exchange for a lighter sentence. The truth was, Ben had deliberately targeted Amy.Even after she began an affair with him, she refused to leave me for him.So, Ben started manipulating the situation to serve his own interests. He told her that if I were to die in an accident, she could inherit everything without losing anything in a divorce.Over time, his

Dr. Madigan’s smile turned sharper.“The suit might not have performed as hoped, but it might have certainly captured something far more revealing.”In an instant, Amy and Ben froze. They had not expected me to actually have evidence.I dragged my pen across the notepad. [I’ll be handing it over to the police later.]Realizing there was no way out, Ben erupted into hysterics.“You set us up! Amy was right about you! Being with you is like walking on eggshells! One wrong move, and you slap a murder charge on us! After everything she’s done for you, you’re sending her to prison? Do you have any conscience at all? She told me she would’ve divorced you long ago if she wasn’t afraid you’d take half her assets and use your connections with Minister Smurl to ruin her career!”Amy panicked and slapped him. “That’s nonsense! I never said that!”Dr. Madigan let out a dry laugh. “Impressive! You clung to Roy’s influence for every accomplishment, and now, you’re acting like you sacrifice

“Minister Smurl, you can’t let them take me! If I’m arrested, my life is over! Haven’t I contributed to plenty of expeditions? You can’t dismiss all of that over one mistake!”Minister Smurl looked absolutely livid.“Those contributions were Roy’s work. You tagged along and took credit, and now, you dare act this entitled? If you weren’t his wife, I would never have allowed such carelessness. Besides, what you did isn’t something I can simply sweep under the rug.”Tears streamed down Amy’s face. “But I never meant to hurt Roy! I really thought he wasn’t in real danger. I just distributed the supplies to other team members who I thought needed them more.”Minister Smurl remained unmoved.“Really? You put so much thought into it? It sounds an awful lot like you simply didn’t care enough to notice. Roy briefed all of you repeatedly before every expedition. I even arranged pre-mission training, specifically on recognizing and responding to dehydration. Do you think your excuses justif

It was ridiculous!Amy faltered for a moment, then composed herself. She said defensively, “But you went through special forces training, didn’t you? None of us were dehydrated, so I figured you’d be fine too! That’s why I let Ben use what you’d prepared.”A bitter, disbelieving chuckle escaped me. The movement sent fresh waves of pain from my wounds.Dr. Madigan frowned and tried to chase Amy out.“Enough! Please leave. He doesn’t need your excuses. What he needs right now is rest!”Amy glared at Dr. Madigan. “You’re just a doctor. What gives you the right to throw me out of here? I’m his wife! I have every right to be here!”I scrawled on the notepad quickly. [Not anymore. You wanted a divorce. I agree.]Then, I turned the notepad toward Dr. Madigan. [Please, find me a lawyer. I want the papers drawn up as soon as possible.]I could not stomach being tied to Amy for another second. She made me sick.Amy’s eyes widened in disbelief. She clearly never thought I would act

I drifted into a peaceful sleep. When I woke up again, I was in the hospital. Dr. Scarlet Madigan from the medical team was checking my vitals. She let out a sigh of relief when she saw that I was awake. “Finally! You know, when our team reached you and saw the state you were in, we were stunned. If we hadn’t gotten to you in time, I don’t think I could’ve lived with myself.”I instinctively tried to thank her, but she quickly raised a hand to stop me.“Don’t. Your vocal cords are severely strained. No talking for a while. Give it some time to recover. As for your wrist, we set the bone, but you may suffer some lasting damage even after it heals.”She held my gaze for a moment as she spoke, and there was a weight behind it.Then, she handed me a notepad and a pen. “Minister Smurl has been waiting a long time for you to wake up. He needs to talk to you. Whatever you want to say, write it with the hand you can still move.”All I could do was meet her gaze with gratitude. She

My consciousness was sliding into oblivion.I could no longer see anything. The pain had faded into a numb, hollow void.It felt like my very soul was sinking into nothingness. All I could hear was Ben’s distant, hypocritical voice.“Roy, are you okay?”I could not answer. He continued in fake concern, “There’s so much blood here! What if predators pick up the scent and attack us? Even if Roy hates me, I can’t stand by and watch him die. I have an idea. Let’s dig a pit and cover him and all this blood with sand. It should hide the smell.”His suggestion was met with immediate agreement from everyone. They grabbed shovels and quickly dug a shallow pit beside me.Then, they kicked me into it.Grit and sand flew into my mouth and nose. I choked and gasped for air. This had nothing to do with hiding the scent of my blood. He was burying me alive. With the last flicker of strength I had left in me, I caught the cuff of his pants.Ben reacted violently and broke my wrist with a
