Chapter 4

作者: Eggs Tomato
The moment those words left my mouth, Camille's expression changed completely. Every trace of guilt vanished, replaced by nothing but rage.

"Ryland, are you done?

"Elliot went that far for you, yet instead of being grateful, you humiliate him? Are you really that cold?

"No wonder your parents shipped you off to the countryside when you were a kid. No wonder nobody wanted you around. You deserved every bit of it.

"You don't deserve anyone's love, Ryland. Not anyone's.

"Elliot, don't bother apologizing to someone like him. You did nothing wrong. Let's go."

She glared at me and took Elliot by the arm, and the two of them walked away.

I watched them leave hand in hand, and the snow swirling in front of me might as well have been falling inside my chest. Everything felt cold and heavy. For a moment, I could not breathe.

I managed to make it to a nearby bench and pulled out my phone. Only then did I notice a message from my closest friend, Griffin Weir, sent half an hour ago.

Griffin: [Ry, I moved to Bridgeton. When are you coming back?]

I stared at the message and realized I might actually have somewhere to go.

I called Griffin, gave him the short version of the story, and got in a cab to the location he sent me.

The moment I sat down in the car, my phone started buzzing nonstop. I checked the screen. Every message was from Camille.

Camille: [Since it's our ninth anniversary, I'll let it slide this time.]

Camille: [Here, take a look. Pick whichever one you want, and I'll buy it for you.]

Camille: [Happy now?]

She had sent over a dozen images in a row. I scrolled through them absently, each one more careless than the last.

A snow globe, a Barbie doll, a water gun, a bouquet of black flowers.

Camille: [Hurry up and pick one!]

I looked at one thoughtless gift after another, and the corner of my mouth twisted. All I felt was disappointment.

When I did not respond, her patience must have run out.

Camille: [Forget it. Don’t choose. I'll just send you money, and you can buy your own.]

A transaction notification popped up right after.

The note read: [Happy 6th wedding anniversary.]

It was our ninth.

I opened it. When I saw the amount, I laughed, though the laughter did not reach my eyes.

She had given me $10. That was not even enough for the snow globe.

I was about to put my phone away when a text came through from a number I did not recognize. It was Elliot.

Elliot: [Sorry about earlier, Mr. Thorne. I already talked to Camille. She said she had an anniversary surprise lined up for you, right?]

Elliot: [She's been busy lately. If there's anything she missed, just come to me.]

Message after message came in, every line dripping with concern, every word supposedly for my benefit. However, it was not hard to see the provocation lurking underneath.

I pulled up the keyboard and slowly typed out a reply.

Ryland: [Ever consider acting? You're a natural.]

Less than a minute later, Camille called me.

I stared at the screen and rubbed my temples. I was exhausted.

When I did not pick up, she called again and again.

The moment I finally answered, her voice was sharp and furious.

"Ryland, what is wrong with you?

"Elliot was trying to be considerate, yet look at what you said to him. Do you even hear yourself?

"If you keep acting like this, you can forget about ever meeting my parents."

I opened my mouth to respond, but the line went dead.

All I could do was sit there, staring at the phone in my hand.

Camille stared at me in shock, her eyes full of anguish. "Honey, how could you—"Her father cut her off. "Camille, if you don't sign, you can forget about the only thing your late mother left you."The pain on her face deepened. She took the divorce papers with shaking hands and signed her name.I pulled out my resignation letter and tossed it onto the table. "One more thing I forgot to mention. I quit."I turned and walked out before any of them could react. I had barely stepped through the door when Camille's messages started coming in.Camille: [Honey, this is a strategy, right? You're doing this to help me get my mother's inheritance for good, right?]Camille: [Once I have full control of the company and the estate, we can get remarried!]Camille: [Honey, just hang in there a little longer.]I stared at the stream of messages, each one more delusional than the last, and blocked her.We were divorced. There was no reason to stay in contact.I headed straight to the airport

I had no interest in arguing with her anymore. She could think whatever she wanted. All I wanted now was the divorce and to leave this city as soon as possible."Sure. Let's go meet your parents tomorrow."I smiled, though the warmth did not reach my eyes.Camille frowned, looking slightly annoyed. "Honey, what do you mean, 'my' parents? They're our parents."I smiled again and said nothing. I walked over to the couch, picked up my phone, and sent another message to my attorney.Ryland: [Mr. Harrell, I'll need another copy of the divorce papers. I'll pick them up tomorrow morning.]"Honey, who are you texting?""Meeting your parents calls for a proper gift."Once the message was sent, I fired off another text, this time to Elliot.Ryland: [Camille says she's bringing me to meet the family tomorrow. What do you think I should wear?]For once, Elliot did not reply. I knew he had seen it, though. There was no way he would let something like that slide."Honey, I'm going to sta

"My parents and my stepmother didn't want the family assets going to outsiders, so they pushed Elliot and me together. They said if we didn't get on board, neither of us would see a dime of the company or the inheritance."So you see, honey, everything Elliot and I did was just to keep our parents happy."We were never real. We just put on a show whenever our parents were watching."Honey, I've told you the whole truth now. Are you still angry? Do you still want a divorce?"Camille stood there with tears brimming in her eyes, looking at me as though she were the one who had been wronged.I looked at her and nodded, my face giving nothing away. She stiffened. Her trembling hand reached out and grabbed mine, her expression pure disbelief."Honey, why?"I just told you everything. Why do you still want a divorce?"Her composure shattered. She lunged forward, tore the divorce papers out of my hands, and ripped them apart. Her eyes were wild with pain."No! I won't agree to a divo

I listened to her calling me ‘honey’ over and over, and for a moment, I felt almost disoriented. In nine years together, Camille had only ever called me by my name. The irony was not lost on me. The moment I had made up my mind to divorce her was the moment she finally started using a pet name.We had always been a step out of sync. When I said nothing, Camille did not seem to mind. She just kept talking."Honey, I know you've been in a bad mood. You don't have to say anything. Just listen, okay?"I've been so exhausted lately, keeping up this whole act for my parents."Do you want me to make sautéed beef tonight? I know it's your favorite."I frowned. "I'm allergic to beef.""Ha! Of course I know you're allergic. I was just trying to get you to talk to me."Okay, I'm going to grab groceries. See you tonight!"The line went dead.I stared at the phone, and the corner of my mouth twitched. Camille was always like that. The moment she got caught in a lie, she would scramble to

"Ryland! I really didn't mean to!"It was just instinct. Elliot has a fear of cars, a trauma. I wasn't thinking. It wasn't on purpose."I sat in the passenger seat, looking at her without expression. "Camille, the divorce papers will be at your door soon. Make sure you sign them."She opened her mouth to say something else, but Griffin had already hit the gas, and the car was pulling away."How are you holding up? You okay?"Seriously, though, do you realize how dangerous that was? Why didn't you move? Were you actually waiting for her to save you? In your dreams!"Wait. Tell me you're not still holding out hope for her."I shook my head and looked out the window at the passing scenery."No," I said quietly. "Never again."In the span of two days, my left arm had been injured three times. The doctor stared at me in disbelief. "How did you manage to rack up both internal and external injuries on the same arm?"I laughed and shook my head. I had nothing to say.Once the wounds

  • My Wife Threw Her Secret Child a Party   Chapter 8

In our second year of marriage, I had brought up having a baby. We went to get checked together, hopeful, but Camille came back and told me she was infertile.I told myself it did not matter. As long as we loved each other, that was enough. Love could overcome anything. What I had not realized was that love could indeed overcome anything, and it had just overcome me.Perhaps her heart had simply never been mine to begin with. I had been too blind to see it, and she had let me stay that way for years. The first time I met Elliot, Camille told me he was like a brother to her. I suppose she did not understand how family dynamics worked.I drifted off again in a haze.Once again, it was Camille's call that woke me. She sounded frantic. "Ryland, there's a group of people here at the office demanding to see you. We can't hold them off anymore. Get over here."I hung up and hesitated for a long time before finally getting dressed. At the end of the day, I was still an employee of the c
