Chapter 2

Author: Ochre Water
I blinked in confusion and shot her a bewildered look. "Didn't you say it yourself? It's necessary for your career."

Immediately, Marilyn looked like she had been doused with cold water. An expression of utter defeat crossed her face.

"Shane, please teach me how we can go back to how we were before?"

She cuddled up against my chest.

The perfume she wore wafted into my nose, the scent that was once wonderful to me now striking me as cloying and irritating.

I said, "Our life is also fine right now, just as it is."

She opened her mouth, about to say something, but then her phone rang.

"Mari, I'm waiting for you at Blackwater Bridge. I'll jump if you don't come!" Henry's drunken voice blared over the speakers.

Marilyn glanced at me hesitantly, her grip on her phone so tight that her fingers had gone pale.

I spoke up first. "See? You should've called Henry to come over earlier. Hurry up and go, or the paparazzi are going to have a field day and come up with a nonsensical scandal again."

For a moment, Marilyn stared at me, her mouth opening as though she wanted to speak.

Ultimately, she hurried out of the house without saying a single word.

My gaze drifted to the puffer coat she had left on the couch before I remembered that it was currently below freezing outside.

However, unlike in the past, when I would instantly head out to deliver it to her, I simply sighed this time.

…

It was midnight when Marilyn finally returned, and she had bought me supper.

I sat by the dining table, my eyes droopy with sleep.

"Shane, Henry got drunk, so I sent him back home. That's all I did, I swear. The other staff members were present for the whole thing, so you can call them if you don't believe me."

With that, she fished out her phone and got ready to call the staff members.

Right before she could press the call button, I stopped her.

"I believe you. There's no need to disturb other people."

Before Marilyn could respond, I turned to the spicy stew on the table and said calmly, "I can't take spicy food since I have gastric problems."

Marilyn was momentarily surprised before she apologized, her tone filled with guilt. "Sorry, I didn't know. Henry said he wanted to eat this, so I bought you a portion too."

It had been several years since I had been diagnosed with gastric problems, yet she was actually saying that she hadn't known?

Yet whenever Henry came down with even the slightest cold, she would immediately bring him medicine.

Letting out a soft laugh, I shook my head like I was unbothered. "It's fine. I'm not hungry anyway. I'm going to sleep first."

However, when I climbed back into bed, I realized I was no longer sleepy.

I had first met Marilyn at a bar.

Back then, she had been singing on stage, and it had been love at first sight.

After getting together with her, I became her manager as though it was the most natural thing in the world. For the sake of getting her work, I spent my days drinking with various investment partners.

That was how I ended up with gastric problems.

Fortunately, Marilyn ended up exploding with popularity after participating in a singing show. To the general public, she claimed that it was sheer luck that caused her to become famous.

It was also that year that we got married and received our marriage certificate. At the time, she had promised me that while she couldn't reveal our relationship to the public, she would definitely not let me down or put me through any suffering.

…

The next morning, I received a job offer. After glancing through it, I handed my phone over to Marilyn.

"This will boost the band's popularity, which is crucial at this point, since you guys are going to release a new song soon."

Marilyn took one look and instantly stiffened. Her tone was disbelieving as she said, "You're actually telling me to go on a dating reality show with Henry?"

I nodded. "This is work, and it's all just an act. It hasn't been easy for us to get this far, so we shouldn't let our personal feelings affect our careers."

Immediately, all the color drained from Marilyn's face.

These were the exact words she had told me back when I had gotten into my very first argument with her, when she decided to team up with Henry to do fan service as a couple.

Now, I was simply returning the words to her, verbatim.

My attitude seemed to wear down what little patience Marilyn had. She answered anxiously, "You're the manager. You decide."

With that said, she stared at me intently, as if expecting me to erupt into an argument with her as I had in the past.

However, instead of arguing, I merely hummed indifferently, lowered my gaze, and continued eating my breakfast.

Right before I was about to head out, Marilyn's nervous voice rang out behind me.

"Shane, if I were to retire from the industry—"

I interrupted her before she could even finish speaking. "There's no need for that. This is your dream."

Marilyn kept calling me, over and over again. With a signal from Cassandra, I picked up and put the call on loudspeaker.Marilyn's voice came over the line, sounding choked with tears. "Shane, can you come back now that you've finished venting your anger?"I had thought that she would be confronting me about my Twitter post."Marilyn, have you signed the divorce agreement yet?"She was silent for several long seconds. "Are you really going to be this cruel?"I was cruel? Was she not cruel when she flirted and was all intimate with Henry while still being married to me?"I've already told you this countless times. There's no way we can go back to how we were before."Unwilling to continue this topic, Marilyn hastily ended the call. She seemed to think that, as long as we weren't divorced, she still had a chance of winning me back. However, I no longer wanted to drag this matter on.I asked, "Can you introduce me to a lawyer?"Cassandra instantly called the studio's legal team

When Marilyn received news that someone had helped me pay off the penalty fee, she kept pestering Andy about it, demanding to know who it was.Andy shook his head, but at her persistence, he finally told her."It's Cassandra Sandler."Marilyn was somewhat stunned. She couldn't figure out when I had ever crossed paths with Cassandra.Off to the side, Henry said in a mocking tone, "No wonder he was so adamant about leaving. Turns out, he's already gotten together with another woman! Mari, you really wasted your time feeling sad over him. How could someone like Shane—""Shut up!" Marilyn yelled furiously.Henry wasn't exactly a doormat and had a fiery temper of his own. Yanking Marilyn to her feet, he snapped harshly, "Marilyn, Shane is gone. He's left you for another woman. Wake up! Right now, I'm the only one you have left by your side!"Marilyn yanked herself free. "This is all your fault! Shane only left me because of you! You stay away from me!"With that, she stormed off, sl

I paused in surprise. "A psychologist?"Cassandra straightened and looked at me earnestly. "Shane, haven't you realized that there's something off with you? Ever since I saw you at the airport, I've sensed that you've changed. To put it simply, right now, you're living like a shell of yourself."It took me a long time to digest what she was implying, during which she kept silent, giving me space. As the car finally came to a stop, she shot me a worried glance.Slowly releasing a breath, I returned her gaze and uttered sincerely, "Thank you, Cassandra."Only then did Cassandra relax. "Go on, then. I'll be waiting for you here."I wanted to tell her to leave first, but when I opened my mouth, the words couldn't seem to come.Actually seeing a psychologist myself was not much different from what I had read online.I looked down at the medical report that diagnosed me as having moderate depressive disorder, realizing that this was exactly as I had expected.Previously, I had found

Marilyn's tone was stubborn and left no room for argument.I had heard these same words on the day after Mom passed away.At the time, I had been feeling dead inside, so I had brought up a divorce. However, Marilyn had refused before reminding me about the substantial penalty I would have to pay for breaking the contract."Shane! Shane Kinsley!"Dragging my mind back to the present, I hummed softly before saying, "I'm serious this time. If you won't sign the papers, we'll take this matter to court."It seemed like Marilyn hadn't expected me to be this insistent and stand firm in my decision. She attempted to use the same trick again."But the penalty for breaking the contract—""Marilyn Cortell, I've already handed in my resignation letter, so I'll definitely think of a way to deal with the penalty."There was nothing but silence on the other end of the line for a good long while.Glancing at the time, I spoke up. "If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up.""Shane Kinsley, st

Stunned, Marilyn muttered to herself, "It looks like you've been planning this for a while now."It wasn't until she once again returned home that she finally noticed the divorce agreement I had left on the table.I had already signed it.Taking out her phone, she stubbornly sent me a slew of messages."Shane, I want to eat the barbecued chicken wings you make. When are you coming back?"In the past, anytime she made a request, I would immediately return home no matter what I was doing. However, this time, she waited through the entire afternoon until day turned to night, yet there was still no sign of me.Marilyn gazed out the window at the night sky. Suddenly, she realized that this must be how I had waited at home for her previously whenever she was out with Henry."So, this is how terrible it feels to wait for someone."At that moment, a notification popped up on her phone."The account you follow, Henry Solon, started a livestream one minute ago."After a brief moment o

Immediately, Marilyn went pale as she leaped to her feet."What did you say?" She rushed over and seized the secretary's hand. "Shane is resigning?"Her extreme response wasn't that surprising. After all, no matter how serious our arguments used to get, I had never once mentioned resigning, not even when I had threatened to divorce her. That was because I knew that becoming a singer had always been Marilyn's dream."Did he mention anything else other than his intention to resign?"Marilyn's aggression scared the poor secretary, who stammered, "N-No…"Hearing that, Marilyn breathed a sigh of relief, while Henry clicked his tongue in displeasure."Shane is truly too much. He clearly knows that the band is currently embroiled in a nasty scandal, yet he still chooses this moment to throw a tantrum. Mari, you shouldn't spoil him so much. If you ask me, this is probably yet another new game he's playing. Besides, setting aside everything else, how could he possibly pay for the breach o
