Chapter 4

Autor: Year on Year
I slammed the door behind me.

By the time I left the apartment complex, night had fallen. Streetlights stretched down the block, and a steady stream of headlights moved along the road.

I stood at the curb as the cold wind slipped beneath my collar. Looking down, I noticed how worn my coat had become. The cuffs were frayed and faded from years of use.

I'd been wearing the same coat for three years.

Linda had never once suggested I replace it.

But whenever Howard needed clothes, she would buy him several new outfits at a time without a second thought.

I stood there for a while before opening my banking app.

The moment I saw the balance, something inside me gradually settled.

Business had been incredible today. I'd made tens of thousands in a single day.

And Linda had no idea.

As far as she knew, I was still scraping together every dollar I could, working myself to exhaustion just to build up our savings.

I'd been so excited to tell her.

Now there was no reason to.

I locked my phone and slipped it back into my pocket, then hailed a cab. "Take me to the best restaurant downtown."

The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror, probably taking in my worn coat.

I didn't care.

I couldn't remember the last time I'd treated myself to a decent meal.

For the past six months, I'd eaten whatever was cheapest. Lunch came from the cafeteria at work. Dinner was usually a sandwich or something equally basic before I started my driving shift.

Some nights I'd stay on the road until well after midnight, my stomach aching with hunger, and still refuse to spend a few dollars on a hot meal.

Every dollar mattered.

Or at least, that's what I thought.

Every dollar I'd denied myself had ended up feeding the bottomless pit that was my brother-in-law.

Not tonight.

Tonight, I wasn't saving a damn thing.

The cab dropped me off in front of an upscale restaurant downtown.

When I opened the menu, I almost laughed. There had been a time when I wouldn't have dreamed of paying prices like these.

Whenever Linda and I went out, she'd start complaining if the bill went over 200 dollars.

But when it was Howard's birthday, she could drop a thousand dollars on dinner without batting an eye.

I closed the menu and handed it back to the waiter. "Bring me all of your signature dishes."

He hesitated. "Sir, we have seven or eight."

"Then bring all of them."

The dishes arrived one after another.

I sat alone by the window and took my time.

The steak was cooked perfectly. The wine was excellent. Even the desserts looked almost too beautiful to eat.

And with every bite, I found myself thinking about the way I'd lived for the past six years.

All those meals I'd skipped, all those things I'd refused to buy, and all those nights I'd gone hungry because spending even a few extra dollars had felt irresponsible.

For what?

When the check arrived, it came to just under three thousand dollars.

A bill like that would've haunted me for days before.

Tonight, paying it felt strangely satisfying.

By the time I got home, it was late.

I opened the door and found Linda sitting alone on the couch.

The moment she heard me come in, she looked up and stood. "Where have you been?"

Her tone was accusatory, as if somehow I was the one who had done something wrong.

I tossed my keys onto the entryway table. "Dinner."

Linda frowned. "Dinner? This late? You went by yourself?"

"Yeah."

"What did you eat?"

"I had steak, some wine, and dessert."

Her expression immediately changed. "How much did you spend?"

"Three thousand dollars."

  • My Wife Used My Dream to Fund His Brother   Chapter 14

Not long after I moved into my new place, I met Claire Sullivan. She was the project manager for one of our clients. The first time we met was at a project kickoff meeting. She represented the client, and she came prepared with a long list of demanding requirements. By the time she was halfway through, several people on my team were already looking tense. Claire noticed. She simply smiled and looked across the table at me."Mark, I know we're asking a lot. But if this were easy, we wouldn't have hired your company to do it."That one sentence immediately changed my impression of her. After the meeting, we went out for dinner together. She ordered sensibly. A few entrees for the table and nothing excessive. When the check came, she reached for her wallet and suggested we split it. I told her I would take care of it.She didn't argue or make a show of insisting. She just smiled. "Alright. Then dinner's on me next time." And there was a next time. For our second date,

Howard forged a supply contract and posed as a building-materials supplier to scam another construction company out of a 150-thousand-dollar deposit. The whole scheme was laughably amateurish. The company's accounting department spotted the discrepancies that same afternoon and immediately called the police.Howard was arrested at the train station. He'd bought a ticket to a city hundreds of miles south and had been planning to disappear. He hadn't even told his own mother he was leaving. When Karen got the call from the police, she fainted on the spot.Howard was eventually sentenced to four years in prison. The fraud involved a substantial amount of money, and he showed little remorse. The investigators also uncovered several questionable financial dealings from his past. Taken together, it was enough to earn him a lengthy sentence. After Howard went to prison, Karen fell apart.Linda lasted less than two months at the grocery store in her hometown. At home, Karen cried cons

I was taken aback."How did you get my number?"The woman gave a bitter laugh. "Howard used to hand out your business card to everyone. He'd tell people you were his brother-in-law and that if anything went wrong, all they had to do was call you, and you'd take care of it."I rubbed my forehead. "So why are you calling me?" She hesitated before answering.Howard owed her 80 thousand dollars and had been dodging her for months. Back when Linda was still around, he kept promising that his sister would pay the money back for him. But now that Linda had moved back to her hometown, Howard had simply disappeared."Mr. Dwayne, I'm not asking you to pay his debt. I just wanted to know if you have any idea where Howard is. I'm taking him to court, and I need an address so he can be served the papers." I gave her the address of the last place I knew Howard had rented. After hanging up, I leaned back in my chair, stared at the ceiling, and let out a quiet laugh.Howard had finally reac

The handwriting was shaky and uneven, and a few of the words had been blurred by tear stains.I stared at that sentence for a long time without saying anything. That afternoon, I went to the grocery store downstairs. I slowly pushed a cart through the aisles, tossing in whatever caught my eye, from imported snacks I'd always thought were too expensive to a couple of packs of beer—things I'd never let myself splurge on before. By the time I reached the register, my cart was overflowing. The cashier was a young woman. After ringing everything up, she glanced at the pile of groceries and smiled. "That's quite a haul.""Just moved into a new place," I said. "Figured I'd celebrate.""Well, congratulations."I thanked her and walked out carrying two heavy bags. The sun was warm, and a light breeze stirred the air.Summer was almost here. That weekend, I invited Frank and a few of the guys out to a lake beyond the city for a day of fishing. We set up several rods along the bank,

  • My Wife Used My Dream to Fund His Brother   Chapter 10

On Monday morning, I was just about to leave for work when Linda showed up at my door. Her hair was a mess. Her face looked pale and exhausted, and her lips were dry and cracked. The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with tears. "Mark."Her voice was so hoarse that I could barely hear her. I looked at her but didn't step aside to let her in. "What are you doing here?"Linda bit her lip as tears began rolling down her cheeks. "I… I really don't have anywhere else to go." Then she told me what had happened.Karen had packed up Linda's things and told her to go stay with Howard. So Linda had dragged her suitcase all the way to Howard's house and stood outside, knocking for several minutes. But Howard wasn't the one who answered. His new girlfriend was.The woman stood squarely in the doorway, making it perfectly clear that Linda staying there would be "inconvenient".Howard was standing right behind her. He didn't say a word.Linda told me that she'd stood there staring

I set down my fork and took a sip of my drink. "Frank, if Howard comes to you again, don't do him any favors on my account."Frank paused, then raised his glass with a grin. "Good. That's all I needed to hear."After dinner, I'd had enough to drink that I wasn't about to drive, so I called a driver to take me home in my new car. We pulled up outside my building. I got out and had barely reached the lobby entrance when someone suddenly stepped out from behind the landscaping.I instinctively took a step back. Then I recognized him.Howard.His shirt was wrinkled, his hair was a mess, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes. He looked like he hadn't slept properly in days."Mark." His voice had an ingratiating edge to it. "Can you give me ten minutes? That's all I'm asking—just ten minutes." I looked at him. "We have nothing to talk about." Panic flashed across his face. He reached for my arm, but I stepped aside before he could touch me. "Mark, I know you hate me, but y
