Chapter 1

Author: Jasmine's Age
"Ryan, weren't you supposed to be spending the summer at your grandpa's? What are you doing here?" I, Caleb Comb, asked.

My son Ryan Comb said nothing. He only looked at me with undisguised annoyance.

I stood in the entryway and glanced around the apartment.

Aside from the neighbor's free-range eggs and hens, the blanket and stroller I'd prepared for our second child had also been moved here by Tina Arthur, my wife.

I held my breath for a moment.

I was about to speak when Tina walked out of the bedroom with a plate of fruit.

The moment she saw me, she froze.

She then ran over in a few quick steps and snapped angrily, "Caleb, you followed me!

"I was only helping our neighbor out. Are you really going to accuse me of something because of this?"

I explained, "I wasn't following you. I just wanted to see how difficult your neighbor's situation really is.

"If he genuinely can't afford to support himself, I'm willing to help him apply for assistance through the community. You don't have to keep giving away things from our home–"

Before I could finish, Tina impatiently raised a hand and cut me off. "So at the end of the day, you're just too stingy to spend your money!"

Tina looked me up and down. Her gaze stopped at my stomach. "You're always staying out all night, claiming you're entertaining clients. And you have the nerve to accuse me of cheating?

"Maybe you're the one doing something behind my back. Otherwise, how could you have ended up with such severe stomach perforation and massive internal bleeding? You even ruined our chances of having another child through IVF!"

I stared at Tina in disbelief.

We had been through thick and thin together for over a decade.

I never imagined she could say something like that.

Back then, she had secretly paid the down payment on this luxury apartment in the city center.

She then secretly sold my old car for slightly over ten grand and used the money to fund a luxury car that cost fifty grand.

Just like that, our family ended up with nearly 300 grand in debt.

I thought the two of us would work hard together and slowly pay it all off.

Instead, Tina simply quit her job and said, "You only live once. Freedom is meant to be enjoyed while one's still young."

The five-grand monthly mortgage payment, our living expenses, and Ryan's preschool tuition all fell on my shoulders.

I had no choice but to spend my days entertaining clients and working for commissions.

She wanted a second child but complained that her health wasn't good enough, so I worked myself to the bone, hoping to take her overseas for the best IVF treatment available.

Guess what? I nearly died after suffering massive stomach bleeding at a business dinner from working myself too hard.

I had barely recovered for two weeks before I went back to working myself to the bone to keep up with the mortgage.

Now she had the nerve to turn around and blame me for ruining my health and destroying our chances of having another child.

I took a deep breath and was about to speak.

Suddenly, my father-in-law, Josh Arthur, came storming out of the bedroom with a dark expression.

He raised his hand and slammed it hard against my back. He struck me dozens of times after that.

"What are you two yelling about? You're both grown adults. Don't you have any sense?

"The baby just fell asleep. If you wake him up, I'll beat you to death!"

Pain shot through my back and spread throughout my body.

I gasped and immediately headed for the master bedroom.

'So all of you care that much about this neighbor, huh? I'm going to find out exactly who this neighbor is!'

Tina didn't reply to my message. The next day, I waited outside the family court for a long time, but she never showed up.Just as I frowned and reached for my phone to call her, Tina appeared in front of me. She was limping as she held Ryan's hand.Ryan was completely different from the way he'd treated me before. With tears streaming down his face, he threw himself into my arms and cried out for me."Dad, I know I was wrong. Daddy Steve wasn't good to me at all. He hit me every day and wouldn't even give me food."Only you ever truly treated me well. Dad, please don't abandon me."As he spoke, he wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes with his grimy hand. He then pointed at Tina. "Mom knows she was wrong too. She told me that from now on, she'll treat you well, work hard to make money and support the family, and she'll never do anything to hurt you again!"Tina smiled and gently rubbed Ryan's head. Her eyes were also filled with guilt and regret as she looked at me. "Hon

Tina stared at Steve's barely conscious state in horror. She instantly panicked. She clenched her jaw through the pain, struggled to her feet, grabbed him, and hurried downstairs.I watched her leave anxiously.I felt nothing but satisfaction.Back then, when I'd worked myself to exhaustion and my stomach condition suddenly flared up, I had vomited blood and could barely move.I'd also been out meeting a client in a place where it was nearly impossible to hail a cab.I had no choice but to call Tina and ask her to drive over and take me to the hospital, but every time I called, she hung up.Even when I sent her messages, she never replied.I kept waiting and waiting until, in despair, I finally put down my phone. In the end, a kind stranger happened to pass by and drove me to the hospital. But by the time I arrived, it was already too late. I suffered massive internal bleeding. The doctor said that if I'd arrived just thirty minutes earlier, I wouldn't have had to suffer nea

Unfortunately, neither of them had any money.Steve thought for a moment, and his eyes suddenly lit up. He said he would go ask the woman who had kept him for money. She happened to be the owner of Tina's company.Tina hesitated. She frowned slightly, walked over to me, and tugged at my sleeve. "Honey, if I can get the money, restore the house to its original condition, and make everything good as new, would you remarry me?"As she spoke, she raised her hand and slapped herself hard across the face. "I was confused before. I only lost my head because Steve and I used to be in a relationship together when we were younger."But I love you. You're the only one I love now!"Looking at her tearful, lovestruck expression, I felt nothing but disgust. It took all my effort to suppress the nausea churning in my stomach, but Tina took my silence as consent. Her eyes immediately lit up with joy, and she grabbed Steve and ran out.Naturally, I wasn't about to miss a show like this.I dr

None of that had anything to do with me anymore. Now that I'd cut ties with them, I spent the next few days looking for a new place and moving.Three days later, I returned to my old house to retrieve a few important documents. The moment I opened the door, the stench of garbage hit me in the face.I walked inside with disgust and found dirty clothes scattered everywhere. The kitchen sink was piled high with unwashed dishes. There were also half-empty takeout containers.Ryan, who had always been kept clean and tidy, now looked like a child who lived on the streets.Hearing the noise, Tina slowly walked out of the master bedroom. The moment she saw me, a flicker of hope appeared in her eyes. She hurried over to me."Honey, I knew you didn't mean what you said that day. You must have missed us and couldn't bear to leave, so you came back, didn't you?"Honey, this household really can't function without you. Look how filthy it's gotten. You can't stand seeing it like this, can

One photograph after another appeared on the phone screen. As Tina stared at the pictures in my hand, her face gradually turned pale.Looking at her expression, I couldn't help but find it ridiculous. "Tina, the look on your face is hilarious. Looks like you've been cheated on."Tina clenched her fists tightly. She uttered through clenched jaws, "Why? Why did you lie to me?"Steve frantically waved his hands. "Honey, listen to me. Let me explain."They forced me to do it with money, but you're the one I love. The child may have been mine with another woman, but from now on, I'll only recognize you as his mother!"You have to believe me! Haven't we been happy together lately? I only wanted to get some money from them so we could have an even better life!"Tina snorted. She grabbed Ryan, crouched down, and looked directly into his eyes. "Ryan, tell me. What did those ladies do when they came over?"Ryan tilted his head and thought for a moment. "They kissed Daddy Steve on the mou

My grip tightened around my phone. That explained why Tina had always refused whenever I suggested putting both our names on the property. She'd even made it sound reasonable, saying that since I was the one paying the mortgage, my name should be the only one on the deed.Looking back now, perhaps she'd been plotting against me from the very beginning. She wanted me to willingly support her entire family."The marriage certificate is fake, huh. That actually makes things easier."I smirked. I immediately contacted a real estate agent and put the luxury apartment on the market at a discounted price.I only cared about selling it as quickly as possible.Coincidentally, that very afternoon, the agent called to tell me that a buyer was interested.I signed the contract without hesitation, took the money, and checked into a five-star hotel.Leaning back against the comfortable sofa, I looked out at the night view and let out a satisfied sigh.My phone started buzzing beside me.
