Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
The next morning, Rachel was out the door at the crack of dawn.

I didn't even need to guess to know she was heading straight back to the hospital to play nurse for Damon.

Not long ago, she had complained to me that her current job was way too exhausting and that she wanted to switch to something less stressful, so she quit.

I hadn't thought twice about it. My salary was more than enough to cover our household expenses, so whether she worked or not didn't make a difference to me.

But ever since she resigned, she had been leaving early and coming home late.

Whenever I asked, she claimed she was job hunting because she didn't want me to carry the financial burden alone.

Looking back now, she wasn't trying to shoulder the burden with me. She was getting IVF treatments at a fertility clinic.

After tidying up the house, I drove over to meet Audrey Sinclair, the attorney I had reached out to earlier.

Unfortunately, once we entered the real world, we drifted apart. It wasn't until she moved back into town a couple of years ago that we finally reconnected.

Audrey was very professional. It didn't take her long to draw up the divorce agreement, and she told me we could make amendments later if I had any additional terms.

But the moment Audrey and I stepped out of the cafe, we ran into Rachel and Damon. They were carrying a mountain of shopping bags. From the looks of it, the bags were filled with baby clothes.

The second she spotted me, Rachel frowned. "Garrett, are you stalking me?"

Then, noticing Audrey standing right beside me, her brow furrowed even deeper. "Who is she?"

Before I could respond, Damon stepped forward and gently caught Rachel's arm.

His eyes darted between Audrey and me, his gaze shifting back and forth suspiciously. Finally, he feigned a look of disapproval.

"Rachel, what are you talking about? Garrett would never stalk us. He's clearly out to meet someone."

Damon was awfully good with words, instantly turning the tables and throwing me under the bus.

Sure enough, the next second, Rachel eyed me with suspicion.

"Garrett Whitaker, you're actually out here seeing other women behind my back?" she hissed. "You better explain to me right now who this bitch is!"

I let out a sharp laugh.

"Rachel, in what capacity are you even demanding answers from me? As my wife?" I asked, completely deadpan. "Because from where I'm standing, you and Damon look a lot more like a married couple. In fact, you're already carrying his kid."

The mall was packed, and the crowd of shoppers immediately stopped in their tracks, their eyes locking onto us.

Rachel's face flushed crimson, and she immediately lashed out at me.

"What are you talking about? Damon is my best friend."

How delusional. I had no desire to stand around bickering with the two of them because it would be pointless.

But the moment I turned on my heel to walk away, Damon's eyes welled with tears, and he grabbed my arm.

"Garrett, you've got it all wrong. Rachel and I are just friends. Look, if it bothers you that much, I can stop seeing her from now on."

He gazed deeply at Rachel as he spoke, as if this were some heartbreaking goodbye scene.

Repulsed, I forcefully ripped my arm from his grip, my voice dropping an octave. "Don't touch me."

The next instant, Damon swayed on his feet and collapsed onto the floor.

Within seconds, his face drained of all color, and he began wheezing, weakly begging Rachel not to blame me.

Rachel let out a piercing shriek, rushing to his side to help him up.

Then, she turned and roared at me at the top of her lungs, "He's sick! How could you put your hands on him? Garrett, I swear to God, if anything happens to Damon, I'll make you pay!"

I was surprised to see that Damon had managed to survive for two whole years.Later on, Audrey told me it was because Rachel had donated one of her own kidneys to him.Unfortunately, her grand sacrifice didn't buy her a happy ending with the Calloways.Damon's parents hated her. The scandals about her online made it so that no one dared to hire her, so the Calloways were stuck footing the bill for her. When Damon finally finished his prison sentence, the reality of paying bills and making ends meet quickly eroded whatever magic was left in their romance. To make matters worse, Damon recently found a box of old photos she had kept of her and me.Combined with the memory of her hugging me and crying about how much she reg

Following the divorce, my parents went into a total matchmaking frenzy. They were absolutely terrified that being a divorced man meant I'd be left on the shelf forever. It got so ridiculous that if they spotted an eligible girl while out grocery shopping, they would actively try to hunt her down for me. They had completely lost their minds.Case in point, the moment I got home one day, Mom called me, practically vibrating with excitement."I've set you up with a total knockout. I like her, so you're meeting her this afternoon. If you don't show up, you might as well just book my funeral!"I shook my head helplessly.I drove over to the cafe, matching the address Mom had texted me, not expecting to see Audrey sitting there.Running into an old friend on a blind date was a whole other level of awkward."Audrey? Don't tell me you're the match my mom set up for me?" I asked, incredulous.Audrey smiled, casually stirring her coffee."My mom dragged me into this. Apparently, our mo

When I came back to myself, I was already in the hospital. The first thing I saw after opening my eyes was someone dozing off beside my bed.The wound on my shoulder throbbed with a dull ache. I licked my parched, dry lips and tried to reach out for the water glass sitting on the nightstand. But because I had been lying still for so long, my arm gave out from a complete lack of strength, and the glass crashed straight onto the floor. The noise must've startled Audrey awake. She looked at me, her face lighting up with surprise.Noting the glass shards scattered on the floor, she immediately helped me sit up and carefully gave me a few sips of warm water before quickly sweeping up the broken pieces.Once the mess was cleared, she sat back down."Garrett, do you have any idea how reckless that was?"She furrowed her brow, staring at me with a look full of disapproval.I let out a weak chuckle. "I was just trying to do my civic duty and cooperate with the authorities!"Because of

When I finally regained consciousness, I found myself strapped to a wheelchair in a hospital room.Standing right in front of me was Rachel, her face dark and menacing. When I recalled the way she had looked right before I blacked out, my brows pulled into a tight knot."Rachel, how dare you kidnap me?" I demanded, twisting my torso to break free. "Let me go!""I'll let you walk out of here on one condition," she said. "But you'll have to donate one of your kidneys to Damon."What? It took a long moment for my sedative-addled brain to process the utter insanity coming out of her mouth.I scoffed. "Is that a joke?"I struggled violently against my restraints, but the ropes binding my hands and feet were tied in tight knots.Rachel stood in front of me, her face as pale as a sheet as she stared at me."You caused my miscarriage and destroyed Damon's final sliver of hope. You owe him this kidney!"Her eyes were completely bloodshot, and the hand she had clutched over her abdom

The next day, the video of Rachel and Damon being attacked went viral across the internet.Bystanders from the bar stepped forward to clarify that the assailant was the wife and the bruised man was her husband. The role of the remaining woman required no explanation.Public sentiment on social media was fiercely critical of the mistress, and Rachel's personal information was leaked in no time. Her company quickly fired her to protect its reputation.I brought the divorce agreement to the hospital. Looking through the glass window, I watched Rachel in her bed. She looked much like she did the day we met—vulnerable in a way that tugged at one's heartstrings.Rachel's family had always preferred boys over girls. Though they agreed to let her attend university, they refused to fund her education.Because of that, she was forced to take out a loan for her tuition, and she worked multiple jobs to put herself through university. We were alumni from the same university. The very fir

I assumed Rachel would sign the divorce agreement without much fuss, but instead, she pulled a complete vanishing act.It didn't phase me at all.I reached out to Audrey immediately and instructed her to file a lawsuit for a contested divorce.Rachel was the one who walked out on our marriage, so she was the only one who had any reason to sweat.I spent the next few days sorting out my travel documents and visas for Eldoria. All I had to do was get this divorce finalized, and I could leave this place to start my brand-new life.…Three days after we filed the lawsuit, Vanessa called me."Garrett, Rachel is completely wasted. Hurry up and bring over a hangover remedy.""You should be calling Damon instead," I replied flatly. "Rachel and I are already in the middle of a divorce.""Garrett, what is wrong with you?" Vanessa shrieked over the line. "Rachel is drunk out of her mind and miserable right now! How can you be cruel? We're at Nocturne Bar. Get over here right now!"The d
