Chapter 1

I heard rustling as Rachel Gooden got dressed. She was still holding her phone while speaking softly to Daniel Wells.

“It’s okay, I’ll be there soon. Just relax and don’t think about anything.

“Don’t be scared. It’s all over…

“Don’t move around. You might hurt yourself. I’m getting dressed. I’ll be there soon.”

I noticed the gentle look on her face and listened to that soothing tone. My heart suddenly trembled.

So, she did have it in her to be so gentle.

It was just a pity that I was not the person she was talking to.

It felt as if my heart was being crushed. It was hard to breathe.

I quietly watched her leave, then picked up my phone and sent a message to my lawyer, John.

[John, help me draft a divorce agreement. Make sure the property division is included.]

A reply came quickly. [Okay.]

Right after that, I called my father.

The phone rang twice before he answered. He did not speak first. He was clearly waiting for me.

“Dad, I’m getting divorced.”

Those few words broke the silence. A faint sigh came from the other end.

“It isn’t too late. Finish handling it and come home. The family business should be passed to you soon.

“Alright, then. Your mother and I are going to sleep. You should be able to handle something so small. Don’t drag it out any further.

“Come back soon. Your mother misses you.”

After that, he hung up.

I knew he had always been awkward and never good with words.

The fact that he had said that much already meant he had forgiven my reckless behavior and childish stubbornness.

We had finally made peace.

As I faced the empty room, I could not help looking back on the suffering of the past five years.

To stay with her, I did everything her family asked, yet their demands only grew worse.

Again and again, I endured cold glances and humiliation.

For her, I endured all of it.

Rachel did not come home that night.

As the pale light of dawn spread across the sky, I understood that our relationship was at its end.

Her call never came. Instead, my mother-in-law called.

“Sam, tomorrow is your father-in-law’s birthday. As his son-in-law, you’d better show some sincerity.”

I did not respond, yet she flared up like a firecracker.

“I’m speaking politely to you, so don’t push your luck!

“You’re the one who made Rachel angry because you’re useless, and I’m the one who’s giving you a way out!

“Bring a gift tomorrow and apologize. Don’t make me say it twice!”

I hung up immediately.

Not long after, Daniel posted a new update.

The photo showed a cheese sandwich.

The sandwich was generously filled, neatly cut, and looked incredibly appetizing at a glance.

His caption read, [Thank you to my wife for making me breakfast. Love you.]

I let out a cold laugh.

Rachel had made that sandwich for me.

Back when we were dating, she learned to cook it just to celebrate my birthday.

After that, every year on my birthday, she would make me a sandwich like this.

However, the one ritual that belonged to me had become nothing more than an ordinary breakfast for Daniel.

What was I supposed to be?

My mother-in-law must have seen that post too.

So, what right did she have to demand that I show up with gifts and apologize?

When I thought of that, I picked up my phone and called her back.

“I’ll be there tomorrow.”

“Good. Don’t forget to prepare a birthday gift for your father-in-law, and an apology gift too. Don’t be stingy.”

Her tone softened. I replied casually and hung up.

Birthday gift? Did he celebrate his birthday seven times a year?

Rachel went to prison. She was convicted of manslaughter, and because there was also suspicion of excessive self-defense, she was sentenced to ten years in prison. Not long after she was locked up, I received the divorce agreement she sent. Her parents delivered it in person. They looked at me with guilt in their eyes. “These five years… We were wrong. We had misjudged him. We never thought we raised someone so ungrateful.” I nodded. “I don’t need your apology, and I will not forgive you. We will not see each other again.” After saying that, I took the divorce papers and left without looking back. Everything here was finished. It was time for me to go home and see my parents. I missed them. I knew they missed me too. I boarded a plane back to Ocean City. … My reunion with my family went smoothly. There were no arguments and no discomfort. Instead, I found only warmth and concern. Everything made me feel at ease. I quickly took over the family business and

After the public opinion turned, Rachel and Daniel became targets everywhere they went. The industry blacklisted Rachel. Even with her excellent grades and years of study, she could no longer work in the field. She was also forced out of the house I bought. The place had already been sold, so even if she wanted to stay, she could not. Almost overnight, she went from a respected head psychiatrist to a social pariah who had nothing. Without income, her family lost their support, and life became harder. They sold the large apartment and planned to move into a smaller place, but when she checked the bank account, the money was gone. Panicked, she rushed to find Daniel, only to see him packing his things, ready to leave. “Daniel! What are you doing? That’s the money from selling the apartment! That’s what we’re supposed to live on! How can you take it?” She lost her mind and reached for his wallet. Daniel shoved her away. There was no trace of the gentle, obedient man from

I knew people could be shameless, but I never thought they could be this shameless. Photos from today’s meeting had already been taken. In the pictures, my expression looked heavy and even a little cold. Rachel looked wronged and pitiful. It was obvious someone had taken them on purpose, just to stir up public opinion. Rachel took the chance to step forward and claim that I forced her to meet, threatened her with divorce, and demanded that she leave with nothing. She even released photos of injuries on her body. Bruises, dark and swollen, patch after patch. They looked frightening. She told everyone I was the one who beat her. “I don’t know how long this video will stay online, and I don’t know if I will live to see the sunrise tomorrow. “But maybe this is the only way I will stay alive. “Sam, I will never be threatened by you. Don’t even think about making me stay silent.” In the video, Rachel sounded righteous and fearless. She looked like a woman risking everythi

Rachel still refused to sign the divorce agreement. She began to block my schedule again and again, and she kept sending messages. Every message was the same. She apologized, acted pitiful, and begged me to forgive her. She tried every trick she could think of. However, I had bodyguards with me. She could not get close, and she never saw me in person. As for her calls and messages, I had already blocked her. I did not entertain a single one. Even if I happened to notice one, I would not reply. Maybe my indifference finally made her feel threatened. She actually posted so-called evidence online, accusing me of cheating and domestic violence. There was a recording of me asking for a divorce, and a video of me entering a hotel room with another woman. “I know you won’t believe me, but I love her, so I’m willing to leave with nothing. I hope you don’t bother her because of this. We are the ones who are truly in love. Let go.” … Once the recording and video were expo

“How could this be? How could this be?” Rachel stared at me in disbelief. She knew I owned a company, and she knew I was a chairman, but she had never imagined I had the power to acquire Third Hospital or fund her psychology project. All the questions she had never been able to answer finally became clear at this moment. Her eyes widened in shock as she stared at me. Daniel, who had been sitting in the chair, also forgot to keep acting. He looked at me in the same stunned silence. The smugness and provocation in his eyes disappeared, replaced by panic. Rachel shook off his hand and almost crawled toward me. Tears ran down her face. Her eyes were full of regret and affection. “You’re the chairman who bought our hospital? You’re also the one who funded my research project?” Her voice trembled, carrying a hint of grievance and pleading. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier? No… It’s not your fault. I was too stupid. I didn’t realize it myself.” She grabbed my hand tight

In less than two days, Rachel was suspended pending investigation. She rushed straight into my office. “Chairman, we couldn’t stop her.” The secretary looked at me helplessly. I waved my hand and told her to leave. Rachel looked much more worn out than before. She still wore an elegant business suit, but her presence was nothing like it used to be. She looked like a rooster that had lost a fight when she used to look like a proud peacock. “Sam, are you trying to ruin me? You actually reported me!” She lunged at me. I stepped aside to avoid her. She grabbed the crystal ornament on my desk and smashed it hard on the floor. “Why are you doing this? Aren’t we husband and wife? How can you treat me like this?” When I did not respond, her anger slowly faded. She slumped into a chair and began sobbing quietly. She wiped away her tears again and again. My gaze fell on the surveillance screen on the computer. Daniel was standing outside the door. I almost laughed at the ir
