Chapter 7

Author: Ann Chase
The first thing Isaac did when he got home was search for their divorce certificate. He found it in the study cabinet, tucked right alongside the marriage certificate belonging to Julia and Daniel.

Looking at the two documents side by side, Isaac felt a bitter pang of irony.

He put away his divorce certificate and began packing his belongings. Halfway through packing, Julia walked in. "What are you doing?"

"Isn't it obvious?" Isaac kept packing without looking up. "I'm moving out."

"Don't be ridiculous. Where would you even go?"

Julia slammed his suitcase shut, a hint of guilt creeping onto her face. "I know I shouldn't have slapped you today, but you crossed the line. That's my son. Shouldn't you have considered how I'd feel when you hurt him?"

Isaac looked at her. "Are you done? I've already resigned. What more do you want from me?"

"Can we stop fighting? Just stay home, rest up, and be my husband," Julia said helplessly.

"Your husband?"

Isaac desperately wanted to ask if he was truly still her husband.

However, he didn't even bother exposing her lies. "I do want to get some proper rest. That's why I'm going on a trip in three days to clear my head."

Julia let out a sigh of relief. "A trip? How about I come with you once I recover?"

Isaac countered coldly, "Could you really leave your newborn son behind? Aren't you worried Daniel would be upset?"

Julia went silent. "I'm sorry. I promise I'll make it up to you next time."

"Ms. Gordon, Mr. Poole's room is ready. He's asking for you."

Isaac froze at the maid's words. "You brought Daniel here?"

"Isaac."

Julia wrapped her arms around him and said gently, "Daniel is still young and doesn't know anything. Noah is still a baby. With your background as an OB-GYN, you know best how to take care of newborns.

"Since you'll be home with nothing to do anyway, why not help us look after him? Daniel needs to focus on his graduation and can't handle it all on his own."

Her scent was intimately familiar, yet it made Isaac gag with disgust.

He pushed her away, his eyes devoid of warmth. "Aren't you afraid I'll hurt the baby again?"

"You won't. Don't be so cold-hearted, Isaac. If you love me, you should love my baby too. I know you'll do everything you can to take care of us."

Love her?

Isaac wanted to tell her that he didn't love her anymore.

"But I'm leaving for my trip in three days. The tickets are already booked."

"Then, just take care of Noah for three days. I'll hire a proper nanny by then," Julia said.

"Fine."

Isaac knew Julia all too well. Pushing back directly would only keep him trapped here.

He had to endure it. Once these three days passed, he would finally be free.

The next morning, Isaac was jarred awake by a bucket of ice-cold water drenched over his head. The freezing water soaked him through to the bone.

Forcing his eyes open, he saw a furious Daniel standing over him with an empty bucket.

Beside him stood Julia. She was glaring at Isaac with seething rage, as if he had committed an unpardonable crime.

"What are you doing?" Isaac yelled.

He had already been feeling under the weather last night. The cold shock made his condition instantly worse.

"Isaac! How could you be so malicious? You actually went to the press and told them Daniel was a homewrecker? He's about to graduate! Do you have any idea what this does to him? You're ruining his entire life!" Julia shouted at him.

"What press? What homewrecker? I have no idea what you're talking about!"

Isaac replied calmly, "Don't make me hate you. If it weren't for you, none of this would've happened. Daniel wouldn't be sitting in a foreign prison right now. This is all your fault. It's time to put an end to this once and for all, don't you think?""I'm sorry." Julia truly meant it. "I never imagined Daniel would lose his mind like this. I was wrong, Isaac.""Then, just leave. Don't come looking for me again. I'm completely exhausted, and I really don't want to see you anymore."Julia said, "I've already canceled your contract. Avernia isn't for you. You should head back home. The position of Head of OB-GYN at Jerandale Hospital is still yours.""I don't want to go back." Isaac turned her down. "I've decided to stay here. The work I'm doing here actually matters.""Alright." Julia nodded softly. "I get it."She finally realized that she had lost Isaac for good and that there was no longer any place for her in his heart. It was time for her to go."I'm leaving first thing tom

A dull thud echoed through the alley as Helen collapsed instantly to the ground."How dare you ruin my plan?"Daniel scrambled up from the dirt, kicked her aside, and stomped toward Isaac. "Isaac, you're dead today. Nobody is coming to save you now!"Isaac slowly drifted back into consciousness. Seeing Daniel approaching with a rock in hand, he frowned and dragged himself up from the pavement with immense effort. "Daniel… Turn back before it's too late. Stop adding to your crimes.""Bullshit! There's no turning back for me!"Daniel raised the rock high above his head, aiming straight for Isaac.Suddenly, Helen reached out her hands and clamped tightly onto Daniel's ankle. "Dr. Howard, run!""Let go of me, you bitch!"Enraged, Daniel struck Helen several more times.Yet even as blood poured over her face, her arms remained locked around his leg like a vise.Seeing this, Isaac lunged at Daniel, and the two broke into a fierce fight."Isaac! Go to hell!" Daniel shouted."Stop

Isaac yelled, "Get off me! Don't touch me! Daniel! You can't do this! Tell them to stop!"He resisted with every ounce of strength he had left, finally inciting the temper of one of the men.The thug raised a heavy fist and slammed it into Isaac's head repeatedly until he knocked him completely unconscious.Gazing down at the passed-out man, Daniel pulled out his phone and dialed Julia's number. When Julia saw the caller ID, her first instinct was to decline the call.Yet remembering Leslie's warning, she forced herself to swipe answer. She was terrified that if Daniel had truly tracked them down to Avernia, he might try to harm Isaac."Daniel, why are you calling me?" she asked."Nothing special. Just wanted to catch up with you.""Cut the nonsense! I know you're in Avernia. What the hell do you want?""You're quite smart." Daniel chuckled darkly."I heard today is Isaac's day off, and I happened to spot him strolling through the open-air market. Coincidentally, a few of my

Morning sunlight spilled over the bustling open-air market.Isaac turned to look at the woman beside him. Her cheek was swollen and red. Julia's slap had landed with considerable force."I'm so sorry for dragging you into this," he said."You're far too polite, Dr. Howard." Helen smiled, unbothered."If it helped you out, then it was worth it. Though I can tell Ms. Gordon genuinely cares about you. Have you really never considered giving her another chance?""Cares about me?"Isaac let out a cold laugh. "If she cared about me, she wouldn't have exiled me to a place like this, let alone cheated on me during our marriage and had a child with someone else."Helen said nothing more. Her gaze fell on a silk scarf displayed at a market stall. She picked it up and draped it effortlessly around her neck. "How do I look?"Her smile was bright and radiant. Her elegant and refined face drew glances from passersby.Even Isaac found himself subtly captivated by her warmth. He nodded and a

Ever since Julia arrived in Avernia, she had been popping up out of nowhere to harass Isaac. She bought him flowers, gave him gifts, and constantly asked him out to dinner or to go shopping. No matter how many times Isaac turned her down, she refused to give up, clinging to him like a stubborn shadow he couldn't shake.Knowing her all too well, Isaac eventually stopped paying her any mind.He was bound to stay here for five years, and based on what he knew of Julia, there was no way she would last five whole years in a place like this.Sure enough, her company in Corvella soon called. "Ms. Gordon, an issue has come up at the company. We need you back to handle it.""We have a deputy CEO. Have him take care of it for now. Everything else can wait until I get back."Just as she was about to hang up, Leslie quickly added, "There's one more thing. Mr. Poole went to your house looking for you recently. After learning you had gone to Avernia, he completely vanished from Jerandale. I su

"What about you?" Isaac asked. "Why did you come here?"Helen looked soft-spoken and delicate, hardly the type one would expect to volunteer for medical aid in Avernia."To save lives and relieve suffering." Her response was somewhat cliché.Sensing that she had her own story, Isaac didn't press any further. The two ended up talking late into the night. …The next morning, as soon as Isaac arrived at the hospital, he saw Julia. She had clearly been waiting for him for a while. The moment she spotted him, a charming smile curved onto her red lips. "Good morning, Isaac. Have you had breakfast yet?""Yeah." Isaac walked right past her and headed straight toward the obstetrics department.Julia clutched her wounded abdomen and hurried to match his pace. "How about we grab lunch together?"Isaac ignored her, but she kept pestering him like a lingering shadow. Finally losing his patience, he stopped in his tracks and turned to face her. "Enough, Julia! Haven't I made myself clear
