Chapter 9

Author: Ann Chase
In no time, Isaac was battered and bruised by the barrage of stones. He tried to dodge, but there was nowhere to run.

When Julia dragged him to the campus, his clothes were still soaking wet. He was already feeling unwell, and now he felt even worse.

Dizzy and disoriented, he reached out, trying to steady himself on Julia.

Worried that being too close to him would be caught on camera and upset Daniel, she stepped back with a frown.

Watching her subtle retreat cut through Isaac's heart like a blade.

"Julia… My head hurts so bad…"

"Stop playing tricks, Isaac. You brought this on yourself."

Her ice-cold detachment killed the final glimmer of hope inside him.

Rocks continued to fly toward him from the aggressive crowd. The moment a sharp stone struck his forehead, his vision went black, and he collapsed heavily to the pavement.

When Isaac woke up, he was lying in a hospital bed.

The only person there was Cole Harvey, a doctor and former colleague of his.

"Dr. Howard, you're awake," Cole said warmly. "I've got good news for you. Your treatments worked! Your sperm motility has completely restored!"

Hearing the news, Isaac gave almost no reaction.

He had endured a year of agonizing treatments to finally recover. Yet what was the point now? His wife already had a child with another man.

Seeing his blank face, Cole frowned in confusion. "Aren't you happy? After everything you went through, you've finally reclaimed your manhood! Haven't you always wanted to start a family with your wife?

"She doesn't know yet, does she? Let me call her to pick you up. Who knows? You two might even have a baby tonight!"

Isaac was stunned for a moment. "Didn't Julia bring me here?"

"No, a student brought you in. After you passed out, Julia took a call and left straight away…"

He had fainted right in front of her, yet she didn't care enough to stay. After all these years, what had he ever meant to her?

Isaac stayed silent. His body trembled uncontrollably from the sheer agony in his chest.

It was all gone. Everything.

He and Julia were over for good.

…

Early the next morning, Isaac discharged himself and returned home.

The house was empty. The maid, Maisie Burton, explained that Julia had checked into a luxury postpartum care center for an extended stay, afraid Isaac might hurt Daniel or Noah again.

"Ms. Gordon and Mr. Poole left first thing this morning. Mr. Poole was all smiles," Maisie added.

Isaac felt nothing listening to her update. He set a small box down on the desk in his room, picked up his suitcase, and turned toward the door.

"Please hand this box to Julia when she gets back. Tell her it's a gift for her and Daniel and that I wish her eternal happiness."

Seeing him set to leave, Maisie asked in curiosity, "Where are you heading, Mr. Howard?"

"On a trip."

"When will you be back?"

"I'm never coming back," he said.

Without looking back, he walked out the front door.

Panicked by his words, Maisie hastily dialed Julia's number. When the line finally connected, Julia's impatient voice came through, "What is it?"

"Ms. Gordon, Mr. Howard said he's leaving on a trip—"

Julia interrupted, her tone frigid and distant, "I know. Let him go if he wants. It'll give him time to reflect on what he's done. He'll be back in a few days anyway."

"But he said he's never coming back—"

Before Maisie could finish her sentence, the line went dead.

Isaac stepped up to the curb and flagged down a cab. "To the airport, please. And make it quick, thank you."

Isaac replied calmly, "Don't make me hate you. If it weren't for you, none of this would've happened. Daniel wouldn't be sitting in a foreign prison right now. This is all your fault. It's time to put an end to this once and for all, don't you think?""I'm sorry." Julia truly meant it. "I never imagined Daniel would lose his mind like this. I was wrong, Isaac.""Then, just leave. Don't come looking for me again. I'm completely exhausted, and I really don't want to see you anymore."Julia said, "I've already canceled your contract. Avernia isn't for you. You should head back home. The position of Head of OB-GYN at Jerandale Hospital is still yours.""I don't want to go back." Isaac turned her down. "I've decided to stay here. The work I'm doing here actually matters.""Alright." Julia nodded softly. "I get it."She finally realized that she had lost Isaac for good and that there was no longer any place for her in his heart. It was time for her to go."I'm leaving first thing tom

A dull thud echoed through the alley as Helen collapsed instantly to the ground."How dare you ruin my plan?"Daniel scrambled up from the dirt, kicked her aside, and stomped toward Isaac. "Isaac, you're dead today. Nobody is coming to save you now!"Isaac slowly drifted back into consciousness. Seeing Daniel approaching with a rock in hand, he frowned and dragged himself up from the pavement with immense effort. "Daniel… Turn back before it's too late. Stop adding to your crimes.""Bullshit! There's no turning back for me!"Daniel raised the rock high above his head, aiming straight for Isaac.Suddenly, Helen reached out her hands and clamped tightly onto Daniel's ankle. "Dr. Howard, run!""Let go of me, you bitch!"Enraged, Daniel struck Helen several more times.Yet even as blood poured over her face, her arms remained locked around his leg like a vise.Seeing this, Isaac lunged at Daniel, and the two broke into a fierce fight."Isaac! Go to hell!" Daniel shouted."Stop

Isaac yelled, "Get off me! Don't touch me! Daniel! You can't do this! Tell them to stop!"He resisted with every ounce of strength he had left, finally inciting the temper of one of the men.The thug raised a heavy fist and slammed it into Isaac's head repeatedly until he knocked him completely unconscious.Gazing down at the passed-out man, Daniel pulled out his phone and dialed Julia's number. When Julia saw the caller ID, her first instinct was to decline the call.Yet remembering Leslie's warning, she forced herself to swipe answer. She was terrified that if Daniel had truly tracked them down to Avernia, he might try to harm Isaac."Daniel, why are you calling me?" she asked."Nothing special. Just wanted to catch up with you.""Cut the nonsense! I know you're in Avernia. What the hell do you want?""You're quite smart." Daniel chuckled darkly."I heard today is Isaac's day off, and I happened to spot him strolling through the open-air market. Coincidentally, a few of my

Morning sunlight spilled over the bustling open-air market.Isaac turned to look at the woman beside him. Her cheek was swollen and red. Julia's slap had landed with considerable force."I'm so sorry for dragging you into this," he said."You're far too polite, Dr. Howard." Helen smiled, unbothered."If it helped you out, then it was worth it. Though I can tell Ms. Gordon genuinely cares about you. Have you really never considered giving her another chance?""Cares about me?"Isaac let out a cold laugh. "If she cared about me, she wouldn't have exiled me to a place like this, let alone cheated on me during our marriage and had a child with someone else."Helen said nothing more. Her gaze fell on a silk scarf displayed at a market stall. She picked it up and draped it effortlessly around her neck. "How do I look?"Her smile was bright and radiant. Her elegant and refined face drew glances from passersby.Even Isaac found himself subtly captivated by her warmth. He nodded and a

Ever since Julia arrived in Avernia, she had been popping up out of nowhere to harass Isaac. She bought him flowers, gave him gifts, and constantly asked him out to dinner or to go shopping. No matter how many times Isaac turned her down, she refused to give up, clinging to him like a stubborn shadow he couldn't shake.Knowing her all too well, Isaac eventually stopped paying her any mind.He was bound to stay here for five years, and based on what he knew of Julia, there was no way she would last five whole years in a place like this.Sure enough, her company in Corvella soon called. "Ms. Gordon, an issue has come up at the company. We need you back to handle it.""We have a deputy CEO. Have him take care of it for now. Everything else can wait until I get back."Just as she was about to hang up, Leslie quickly added, "There's one more thing. Mr. Poole went to your house looking for you recently. After learning you had gone to Avernia, he completely vanished from Jerandale. I su

"What about you?" Isaac asked. "Why did you come here?"Helen looked soft-spoken and delicate, hardly the type one would expect to volunteer for medical aid in Avernia."To save lives and relieve suffering." Her response was somewhat cliché.Sensing that she had her own story, Isaac didn't press any further. The two ended up talking late into the night. …The next morning, as soon as Isaac arrived at the hospital, he saw Julia. She had clearly been waiting for him for a while. The moment she spotted him, a charming smile curved onto her red lips. "Good morning, Isaac. Have you had breakfast yet?""Yeah." Isaac walked right past her and headed straight toward the obstetrics department.Julia clutched her wounded abdomen and hurried to match his pace. "How about we grab lunch together?"Isaac ignored her, but she kept pestering him like a lingering shadow. Finally losing his patience, he stopped in his tracks and turned to face her. "Enough, Julia! Haven't I made myself clear
