Chapter 3

Author: Tiny Mess
The suspicion I had suppressed came rushing back. I could not convince myself anymore.

"Mr. Shaw, this is—"

The sales associate hovered over the black card, unsure whether to accept or refuse it. She leaned close to my ear for direction.

I was already fairly certain the card was Giselle's, but I needed to be absolutely sure.

"Let him have it."

She only relaxed once I gave the word. She took the card from the man's hand and ran it through the machine.

When the receipt printed, the card number on it was one I knew by heart. The sight of it burned through my chest.

The man snatched up the gift bag with a smug grin and shot me a look over his shoulder.

"See that, you broke deadbeat? The rest of you, stop letting just anyone into the store or you'll catch some filthy disease from him!"

The words were so harsh that the sales associate frowned.

"Don't go spreading lies like that!"

"Do you have any idea who I am?" He let out a short, incredulous laugh, as if he had just heard the funniest thing in his life.

"You think someone like me needs to make things up?"

I watched his insufferable display and clenched my jaw.

"Go ahead then. Tell me who you are."

"You know Giselle Bedford? She's about to marry me!"

The chance to show off took his arrogance to a new level.

"Tsk, why am I even wasting my breath on you? A nobody like you wouldn't know anyone that high up." He waved a dismissive hand.

"I'm done talking to you people. My wife's waiting for me. We're heading out to a fine dining restaurant!

"Ever heard of Le Ciel? The minimum spend is $20,000 a meal!"

He let out a derisive huff, tilted his chin up, and walked out the door.

Every employee in the store who recognized me was watching with poorly concealed curiosity.

I did not have the energy to care about their stares. My head was full of nothing but Giselle's name.

Le Ciel was her favorite restaurant.

I did not care whether Giselle was in a meeting. I called her immediately.

I had planned to confront her the moment she picked up, but when the line connected, I changed course.

"I'm at the tailor's. Want me to pick up a new dress for you to wear to the upcoming gathering?"

"Sure. Get whatever you think looks best."

Giselle's voice was so calm that it made me doubt my own suspicions. She had not flinched at the fact that I was in the same space as this man. Had I been wrong, or was she simply that confident I would never find out?

Before I could work it out, her voice came through the phone again.

"I'm still on my way to the bid meeting. Traffic's so bad I'm going to be late. The meeting will probably run long, so I won't be home for dinner tonight."

I laughed bitterly to myself. Giselle, who always put work above everything else, was going to be late to a meeting because of this man. She was using something as flimsy as traffic as her excuse.

I was not going to call her out over the phone, though. I kept my voice the same as always.

"Alright, tell the driver to take it easy. Stay safe."

After I hung up, I held myself together and ignored the curious looks from the staff. I picked out a suit and a simple dress, paid for both, and left.

On the drive home, I passed Le Ciel. My grip tightened around the shopping bags the moment I saw the sign.

Deep down, I still did not want to believe Giselle would betray our marriage. However, that conviction felt impossibly small against so many coincidences.

The first thing I did when I got home was call a lawyer. I had every asset in the household appraised and divided strictly according to the law.Within two hours, the divorce papers were in my hands. I went through every clause with painstaking care, but I stalled at the very last step.I spent the entire night staring at the signature line. It was not until morning sunlight crept across the desk that I finally wrote my name. The moment I capped the pen, I felt lighter than I had in days.I took the papers and arrived at the courthouse before Giselle. She was not far behind. The white Bentley pulled up in front of me.What I had not expected was the black Mercedes right behind it, the one with five sevens on the plate.I could not believe it. She needed a whole motorcade to sign divorce papers? Was she planning to marry Dennis right after? Then two Giselles stepped out of the cars, and my brain short-circuited.They were identical, with the same build and same face, down to the

I followed Dennis's gaze and turned around. Giselle had returned. She stopped the moment she saw Dennis curled up on the ground. The confusion on her face was identical to earlier that afternoon, except now there was a hint of impatience underneath it."You again?"I could not help but let out a bitter laugh. I had no idea why she was so determined to keep pretending in front of me, as though pretending she did not know would somehow make it all disappear."Giselle, how long are you going to keep this up?""You've truly disappointed me! I can't believe I raised someone like you!"Even Pauline could no longer stomach the performance. She stepped forward and shoved Giselle hard enough to send her stumbling. Giselle stared back at us in stunned disbelief."Scott, Mom, what are you talking about? What am I pretending about?"The bewilderment on Giselle's face looked painfully genuine, but I was not going to fall for it again. I turned my head and refused to engage.Dennis took the

"Scott, what's wrong?"Pauline's voice reached me at the same moment a tear landed on my arm. I had not even realized I was crying.Seeing the concern in her eyes, I could no longer hold myself together."Mom, I just overheard Giselle on the phone. I think I really am going to have to get a divorce."The pain left me struggling to get the words out, but I trusted Pauline to understand what I meant."If you have proof, then I support you. I failed to raise my daughter right, and you're the one paying for it."But listen to me, Scott. Even if you and Giselle divorce, I'm still your mother. Losing a daughter but gaining a son isn't so bad."I did not quite catch her last words, because Dennis appeared out of nowhere, grabbed me by the arm, and slapped me across the face before I could react."You shameless piece of garbage, stealing another man's woman! And you have the nerve to cry about it?"Figures. A guy who sells himself for a living is bound to be full of tricks!"His sudd

"Honey, please say something. I'm so scared you actually believed what that man was saying."Giselle took my hand and used the soft, spoiled tone she reserved only for me.I looked over at Pauline. She just frowned and shook her head.At the very least, Giselle's behavior today showed she didn't want to expose our conflict in public. If that was the case, why had she told Dennis to come?I could not figure it out yet, but I also could not let the room stay frozen like this. As long as Giselle and I were still married, the embarrassment fell on our entire family.I swallowed everything churning inside me, forced my expression to be neutral, and put on the smile expected of Giselle's husband."It was probably just a misunderstanding. Please, everyone, carry on.""See? I knew it. Cousin Giselle would never do something like that......"That was all it took to break the ice. The atmosphere came back to life within seconds.Giselle let out a breath of relief and slipped her arm aro

The man from the hospital was right outside, trying to force his way past security."Do you have any idea who I am? I'm Giselle Bedford's fiancé! How dare you block me! I'll have every one of you fired!"His rude behavior made even his expensive custom suit seem cheap. While he was still arguing with the guards, he spotted Giselle rushing toward the entrance."Giselle, babe!"Hearing him call my wife's name with that kind of familiarity killed whatever hope I had left. His rough voice and overly familiar tone made everyone cringe., made everyone within earshot cringe."Look at them! They actually tried to keep me out! Do something about it! No, just fire them all!"Giselle did not rush to his side the way I had expected. She stopped in her tracks."Who are you?"Pauline and I both frowned. She was the one who had told him to come, yet the confusion in her voice did not sound rehearsed. Before any of us could make sense of it, the man's face crumpled. "It's me! Dennis! Dennis

Giselle eventually came home and wrapped her arms around me the way she always did, burying her face in my chest. It was a side of her that no one outside this house ever saw. She had told me once that all she needed was to hold me, and every bit of exhaustion from the day would melt away. Her gestures and her expression were flawless, so perfect, that for a moment I almost forgot everything.I glanced at the clock. It was only 9 PM. Pauline, who usually turned in early, was still watching television in the living room.Would a woman having an affair really come home this early?A flicker of guilt crept in. Maybe I had been overthinking it. Then a scent drifted off Giselle. It was Le Ciel's signature fragrance. My heart tightened. When I spoke, my voice was shaking. "Giselle, what did you have for dinner tonight?""Le Ciel."My limbs went cold and my entire body locked up from those two words.Right then, Giselle's phone rang. She checked the caller, and for the briefest mome
