Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
Cynthia left and didn't come back that night.

Once I made up my mind to divorce her, I went to the nursing home to visit her mother, Mia Harper. I figured I owed it to her to let her know what was happening.

"Daniel, how come you didn't come with Cynthia?" Mia beamed the moment she saw me.

She had been my mother's best friend. Ever since my parents passed away, she had treated me like her own son. Every time Cynthia and I had a fight, she always took my side.

When I saw Mia, a sudden lump formed in my throat. I tried to force the truth out a few times, but the words choked me.

She was getting old and her health was failing. She couldn't take this kind of shock.

But I couldn't hide it forever. I took a deep breath and looked her in the eye. "Mom, I'm going to divorce Cynthia."

The smile froze on Mia's face before she asked cautiously, "Did you two get into another fight? Tell me what happened. I'll straighten her out for you."

Watching her pat her chest defensively for me made my eyes sting.

I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that Cynthia had secretly had a child with her ex-husband and kept it from me for five whole years.

Right then, the ward door swung open.

A little boy came bursting into the room. It took me only a second to recognize him as Theo.

Sure enough, Cynthia walked in right behind him.

"Granny! Mommy and I came to see you!"

Mia's face instantly lit up. She pulled Theo into her arms, showering him with kisses. "My sweet boy, it's been so long since you visited me! Let me see if you've gained any weight."

Her eyes were overflowing with pure adoration.

I stood at the foot of the bed, completely paralyzed.

It took me a long time to find my voice. My fingers trembled uncontrollably. "Mom… so you knew all along."

Hearing this, Mia awkwardly let go of Theo. She shot a look at Cynthia before turning back to me. "Daniel, is this why you want a divorce?"

At the mention of divorce, Cynthia let out a cold scoff. "Mom, don't listen to him. I just finally told him the truth about Bradley and Theo. He's just throwing a tantrum."

Mia, now fully understanding the situation, spoke to me in an earnest tone. "Daniel, before your mom passed, she asked me to look after you. Ask yourself, haven't I treated you well all these years?

"You and Cynthia have been together for so long. Don't throw around the word divorce over every little thing. Since you have a medical condition and chose to be childfree anyway, why not just raise Theo as your own son?"

The color drained from my face. "What medical condition?"

Mia frowned, her patience wearing thin. "Cynthia already told me you can't have kids. Stop being so petty over something so minor."

My brain went entirely blank. When reality finally registered, a bitter, hysterical laugh escaped my throat.

Cynthia was the one who insisted on being childfree, which was the only reason I had gone to the hospital to get a vasectomy. Now, in her narrative, I was the one who was broken.

Cynthia averted her gaze, refusing to meet my eyes.

Mia sighed and tried to reason with me again. "I'm old, Daniel. All I want is to see my family whole. It's just a kid. It doesn't cost you anything."

Maybe out of a lingering sense of guilt, she promised to register Theo under my legal guardianship. She even offered to put up all her savings as a guarantee that Cynthia would never cross the line with Bradley.

But none of these promises meant a thing to me anymore.

Mia clutched her chest, and the warmth completely vanished from her face. She grabbed the cup from the bedside table and hurled it at me. The hot water scalded my skin with a sharp sizzle.

"Daniel Houghton! Are you trying to drive me to my grave? I have been so good to you all these years, and you won't even compromise on this one tiny thing? Are you even human?"

"Mom, he'll agree once he cools down. Don't waste your breath," Cynthia chimed in, her tone entirely unbothered. She was still convinced I would give in, just like I always did.

Mia's words turned my heart completely to stone.

I had basically grown up under her roof. I truly loved her like a second mother. I had genuinely believed that she, like me, had been kept in the dark by Cynthia.

But in the end, I was the only fool left out of the loop.

Deep down, I finally realized that the only people who ever truly loved me were already dead.

Daniel's POVThe moment I stepped onto the plane, I knew there was no future for Cynthia and me.I just never expected to run into her again five years later.By then, I had wrapped up my overseas assignment, and the company was throwing me a welcome-back party. That was when Cynthia showed up.She seemed dazed for a split second when she spotted me, then she immediately bolted toward me. "Daniel, where on earth have you been all these years? I looked everywhere for you."Her eyes were red from crying, and every single word was laced with a deep sense of grievance.Mindful of my colleagues nearby, I led Cynthia out of the private dining room."Say what you want to say."My cold attitude caught her off guard. She stared at me, visibly bewildered. "Where did you go for five years? Why did you stop taking my calls?"As I looked at the aggrieved Cynthia in front of me, I found it somewhat ridiculous."Didn't you tell me back then that we either keep going or get a divorce? Well,

Cynthia and her family spent a week vacationing abroad.During that week, she made a conscious effort to push all thoughts of Daniel to the back of her mind. But when she unlocked her front door back home, Daniel was nowhere to be seen.Worse yet, every single trace of his belongings was gone. For a fleeting second, Cynthia panicked, thinking they'd been robbed. She took a deep breath to steady her racing heart.Bradley noticed she had been checked out since the trip, and a flash of malice crossed his eyes.Dropping his luggage, he stepped up behind Cynthia and wrapped his arms around her."Cynthia, my offer for us to get back together still stands. Because of Daniel, Theo is being called a bastard at school, and people are giving me dirty looks too. I know you've had second thoughts over the years. Let's remarry."Hearing Bradley's words, Cynthia felt absolutely nothing. She just wanted to find out where Daniel had gone. But every single text she tried sending him didn't go

The moment the plane touched down, Cynthia rubbed her temples. For some reason, she had been too terrified to turn on her phone during the entire flight. It wasn't until they arrived at the hotel that she finally switched it on.There were no replies from Daniel, and he hadn't made a single attempt to return any of her missed calls.A sudden, deep chill washed over her.She dialed his number again, but it rang out with the same empty tone. The heavy knot of anxiety that had been tightly coiled in her stomach all day refused to dissolve.Cynthia tried to rationalize it. Maybe Daniel had been in an accident, which was why he couldn't answer. Or maybe his phone had just died, explaining the earlier shutdown. At that thought, she called one of Daniel's coworkers."Daniel? Didn't he leave for his overseas assignment today?"The coworker's casual response left Cynthia's mind completely blank."An overseas assignment? Since when?"Surprised by her shock, the coworker patiently expla

A busy signal returned instead. In the end, she resorted to sending him a text message. "We're already at the airport. How much longer are you going to be?"Five minutes passed, and there was still no reply.Mia let out a few weak coughs. "Where's Daniel?"Not wanting her mother to stress right after major surgery, Cynthia forced a warm smile. She walked to a quieter corner and tried Daniel's number again, but this time, an automated voice informed her that his phone was switched off. That was the last straw for Cynthia's dwindling patience.A wave of irritation flared up inside her. She had planned to use this trip as an opportunity to finally talk things through with him, and here he was, throwing her kindness back in her face."Don't bother waiting for him. It's not like we absolutely

When I finally regained consciousness, I was already at the police station. The wound on my head had been sloppily bandaged, and the blood was still seeping through.Cynthia stood nearby, her expression detached as she spoke to the police officer. "My son was bullied at school because of the rumors he spread, and my mother is still in the ER because of him. He's the one who started the fight. I have the security footage to prove it."The bystanders from the hospital backed her up, pointing fingers and shouting accusations at me.With Cynthia's statement and the witness testimonies, I was placed under a 15-day administrative detention. Before Cynthia left, she glanced back at me one last time. "Take this time to reflect on yourself. This was such a minor issue, and you just had to blow it out of proportion."Shortly after she left, I received a text from the cemetery manager. "I am so sorry, Mr. Houghton. The graves were heavily damaged, and your parents' urns were…"The sheer ab

After leaving the nursing home, Mia blocked my number. For the next few days, there was total silence. Now that all the cards were on the table, Cynthia didn't bother coming home either. Since Bradley's apartment was directly below mine, she moved all her belongings down there.Almost every single night, I could hear the noise from downstairs. They were always together, coming and going as a family. Even the neighbors who knew me started giving me strange looks.A week later, while I was at work, Cynthia finally called. Mia had fainted. The moment I rushed into the hospital, Cynthia slapped me across the face with everything she had.A sharp ringing filled my ears as my vision swam. The loud crack of the slap made the people nearby stop and stare.Cynthia's chest heaved with rage. She looked at me like she wanted to tear me to pieces. In all the years we had been together, she had never once laid a hand on me."Daniel, I didn't realize you could be this disgusting! How could
