Chapter 6

Author: Cocojam
Seven-thirty AM. A high-end private club in Beverly Hills. David sat alone in the VIP lounge. His espresso was ice cold.

I walked over. Pulled out a chair. Sat down.

"What exactly did you do to her?" He stared dead at me.

I ordered a black coffee from the waitress. Slowly stirred in a Splenda packet. "I don't know your meaning."

David slammed his hands hard on the table. The coffee cup jumped.

"Drop the act. Did you use some dark magic? Mia throws up from just drinking water. Take your anger out

A week later. Beverly Hills morning had a chill in the air.A black SUV parked out front.David stood by the car holding two heavy suitcases. Looked much older. That trial of favoritism totally ripped off the last fig leaf of this wealthy family. And irreparably fractured his marriage with Sarah. Built on vanity and perfect personas. He had no face to stay in this house.Chose to move into a downtown LA Penthouse for now. Leaving the Beverly Hills mansion to Sarah and me.Needed to completely step back. To digest his failure as a father. And give me breathing room without the pressure. And Mia. Decided not to leech onto this family either.Exiled to a cramped condo in the valley. Stripped of her black Amex. Cut off from the main family trust. She carried a single nylon duffel bag. The ultimate social death.David offered to drive her today.Leaned against the doorframe. Watched them calmly.David walked up. Stopped one step away.Fifteen years. First time he dared to look me in the eye

My finger hovered over the screen. No hesitation. Hit "Confirm" hard. The screen flashed a blinding white light.Three seconds later. The light faded.A cold line of black text appeared."Replication effect permanently terminated. Protocol completely purged."It was all over.Leaned back against the cold ER chairs. All my strength drained instantly. No ecstatic joy of revenge. Just deep exhaustion after the fight ended.Stood up. Walked toward the room at the end of the hall.Looked through the glass window on the door.Dozens of minutes ago. Mia was twitching and screaming like a dying monster.Now. She laid quietly with her eyes closed.Chest rising steadily. She was asleep.Over seventy hours of torture officially ended.Didn't go in. Turned and walked out of the hospital.Back at the Beverly Hills mansion. Almost dawn.Strode straight to the second floor. Pushed open Mia's massive master suite. The moment my eyes hit the room. I froze. The protocol's deprivation was merciless. The

The fluorescent lights in the hospital lobby were blindingly white.I gripped Sarah's wrist tight. She struggled hard. Couldn't break free.Dragged her all the way to the emergency stairwell at the end of the hall. The heavy fire door shut behind us. Completely sealing off the noise."Let me go!" Sarah screamed. Tears ruined her flawless makeup.Let go. Looked at her coldly: "Stop crying. Mia's heartbeat is back."She froze. Gasped. Then desperately grabbed my trench coat."You stopped? You finally let her go?""I let her go." I brushed her hand off. Voice cold as ice. "Now, your turn to give me an answer."Sarah's eyes darted around. Smoothed her messy hair. Trying to regain her high-and-mighty motherly poise."What else is there to say? You almost killed your sister.""Drop the act." I took a step forward. Glaring right into her eyes. "I already know. That damn protocol never took a single dime from me. It just created double for Mia out of thin air."Sarah jolted. Face went dead pal

Clicked confirm without hesitation.Screen turned pitch black. Lines of green code popped up like an old typewriter."Time trace: July 14, 2009.""Event log: Host's seventh birthday. Appended target trigger record.""Audio capture: I want my sister's things. I want more than her.""Protocol log: Core logic established. Replication rule permanently active."Stared dead at the screen. Heart hammered by a sledgehammer.July 14, 2009. My seventh birthday. Mia's second month since adoption. She was six. Fresh from the orphanage to Beverly Hills.Just an insecure kid's babble. Desperate to grab onto everything. She had no subjective malice in the beginning. The protocol just captured that sentence. Strictly executed it for fifteen years.Exactly like Mia yelled. The protocol duplicated resources out of thin air. It never stripped anything from me.Stood frozen. My blood running cold. The protocol didn't steal my things. What did that mean?It meant Sarah and David's favoritism. The emotional

Listened to the memo. Shoved the phone back in my pocket.Didn't go home immediately. Sat stubbornly in the studio until dark.Eight PM. Pushed open the grand mansion doors.Living room quiet as a grave. Sarah and David probably collapsed from exhaustion.Walked up the solid wood stairs. Pushed open the guest room door.Mia lay paralyzed on the rug like mud.Walked over. Grabbed her pajama collar. Dragged her into my room.Slammed the door locked. She fell on the rug like a broken puppet."Speak." I pulled up a chair. Looked down at her. "What have you known since we were kids?"Mia gasped for air. Bulging eyes terrifyingly bloodshot.Pushed to her absolute physiological limit."I know you're a monster." Her hoarse voice cracked into a hideous, miserable smile. "And I know. You make a wish. I get double."I looked at her coldly. Waiting for her to continue."I figured it out at age six." Mia's fingers clawed the rug. "Your birthday. You wished for an American Girl doll. I got two the n

"I'm going crazy! Let me sleep! Please let me sleep!"Mia's bloodcurdling screams tore through the silent mansion.Insisted on coming home from the hospital. Now curled on the living room sofa.Trembling wildly. Ten fingers digging hard into her scalp. Pajamas completely soaked in sweat.I had pulled a six-hour all-nighter for my art exhibition for three days straight. My body only let me sleep two hours a day. But I could hold on.The double effect on Mia was a catastrophic deprivation. The protocol took twelve hours of her sleep. Plus the energy needed to stay awake for her socialite life during the day. She completely lost the ability to close her eyes.Seventy-two hours. Not a single second of sleep."Mom. My brain is exploding!" Mia slammed her head against the armrest. "My bones are cracking! All of them! Save me!"Sarah held her tight. Trying to stop her self-harm. She looked up at me.No more blame. No more anger. Pure, extreme terror. Looking at me like an unknown monster.I s
