Chapter 5

Author: Pancake Roll
I stepped back into my role as Mrs. Carmichael. I was warm, attentive, and deeply concerned about Annette's "condition".

I even volunteered to stay at the hospital and look after Annette so Ronan could focus on the company and on "finding" Micah.

Ronan was surprised by the shift in my attitude, but mostly he seemed relieved. He probably thought I'd finally come around.

At the hospital, Annette watched me fuss over her with the smug satisfaction of someone who'd already won. "Daph, you finally

Three years later, I returned to Glenworth with Micah. I held his hand and pushed open the front door of the Carmichael family estate, which had been shut up and gathering dust for years. I'd bought the place."Mommy, are we going to live here now?" Micah looked around with wide, curious eyes."We are." I smiled at him. "This is our home now."I took Micah into what used to be Ronan's study. An enormous photograph hung on the wall, and the person in it was me. It was me at 16, at the East End project meeting, full of fire and confidence. So he really had fallen in love with me back then.I walked to the desk and pulled open the bottom drawer. Inside was a locked metal box. I tried Ronan's birthday as the combination, and it opened. There was no gold or jewelry inside, just a collection of old things that had clearly been kept for years. There was a yellowed movie ticket from the first film I'd ever seen, a broken string from my favorite violin, and even a piece of candy with a fa

Ronan left without giving me the chance to refuse, just as suddenly as he'd appeared. Micah stayed behind. He was a good kid, well-behaved and mature for his age, though every now and then he'd sit staring at the door. I knew he was waiting for Ronan to come back, but Ronan was never coming back.A month later, I got a call from a lawyer. Ronan was dead. He'd chosen to end things on his own terms, and he went peacefully.I didn't go to the funeral. I just picked out a bouquet of white roses for him at the shop.Life settled back into its usual rhythm. I raised Micah, ran the flower shop, and the days passed without much color to them. I thought it was all over. Then one day, an anonymous package arrived, and inside was Ronan's journal. My hands were shaking as I opened it. The handwriting looked just like him, sharp and obsessive. The entries started on our wedding day."June 18th, clear skies. I married Daphne Sayer today. I know she doesn't love me. She loves my brother. That's

I left Glenworth and moved to a small town down south, where I used the money I'd taken back to open a little flower shop. Life was quiet and peaceful, and I was sure I'd never cross paths with Ronan again. Then, a year later, Kay tracked me down. He brought news that stopped me cold.Desmond was dead. He'd been killed in a hit-and-run, and the driver had fled the scene."The police investigated for a long time and never found a lead." Kay handed me a newspaper. "But word on the street is that Ronan was behind it."I stared at Desmond's photo in the paper, and I didn't know what to feel. I'd loved this man once, and I'd hated him too. Now he was dead, and I couldn't summon so much as a ripple of emotion."What about Ronan?""He sold off Carmichael Group, took your son, and disappeared."I didn't say anything. I hadn't expected Ronan to go that far. He hadn't just destroyed the Carmichael family; he'd killed his own brother. He really had lost his mind. Two more years passed, an

Annette lost her mind. She jumped from the hospital roof and died on impact.I got the news while I was building blocks with Micah. Kay stood behind me and delivered the report in a flat voice."Ronan was standing right below when she jumped. Her blood splattered all over him."My hand paused for just a second over the blocks. "How did he react?""He didn't. Just stood there like a statue." Kay paused. "The police took him in for a statement and he wouldn't say a word."I simply hummed in response and placed the last block on top. A perfect little castle was finished."Mommy, pretty!" Micah clapped his hands and laughed.I ran my hand over his head, but inside I felt hollow. Annette was dead, sooner than I expected, and far more anticlimactic than I'd imagined.I thought I'd feel vindicated, triumphant even. But I didn't. There was just a gaping hole in my chest with cold air rushing through it.Maybe real hatred wasn't about making someone die. It was about making them wish t

Ronan's hand loosened around my throat, the shock knocking the grip right out of him. I gulped in air and watched the blood drain from his face."How did you—""How did I find out?" I let out a cold laugh and pried his fingers off one by one."Did you really think I was still that naive girl Desmond could string along with a single sentence? You played your part well, Ronan. You played the devoted husband, the loving father. But even the best actors slip up eventually."He staggered back a step, as if all the strength had been pulled out of him. "That's not how it was. Daphne, I admit I had an ulterior motive at first, but I really did fall in love with you. I—""Love?" I cut him off. The word sounded obscene coming from his mouth."Your love was turning our son into a dose of medicine. Your love was choosing Annette over me without a moment's hesitation. Your love is cheap, Ronan, and I don't want it."I turned around, pulled a stack of documents from the drawer I'd prepared in

I used Annette to get the key to Ronan's study. That night, I slipped in and installed a small piece of software on his computer, then went back to the bedroom like nothing had happened.Ronan was sitting on the edge of the bed, smelling faintly of alcohol. When he saw me come in, he grabbed my hand and pulled me into his arms."Daphne, I'm sorry." His voice was heavy with exhaustion and pain."Something happened at the company, and with Micah on top of it, I'm barely holding it together."I leaned into him without resistance, but my hand curled into a fist behind his back."It'll get better," I whispered, as much to him as to myself. The next day, Carmichael Group's stock price began to plummet out of nowhere. An anonymous email had surfaced containing every piece of core data and financial vulnerability from the East End project, and it had been sent directly to the Carmichaels' biggest competitor.Ronan scrambled to contain the damage and immediately suspected an inside leak.
