Chapter 3

Autor: Peachy YoYo
I read through both agreements.

They made one thing clear: whatever happened between Raphael and me after we got married was none of my family's concern.

They would owe me nothing, no matter what happened.

And the same went for me. I would owe them nothing either.

My parents and Cersei had already signed. They had clearly planned this long before today.

I looked from my parents' cold faces to Cersei, who leaned smugly in Antonio's arms.

And finally, I understood. My parents had never truly loved me.

What I had mistaken for love was only their appreciation for what I could do for them.

As a child, I looked after Cersei and did chores around the house.

As an adult, I made money and saved their company from bankruptcy.

Now that I had chosen to marry a man they believed was a low-level employee, I was no longer useful to them.

That was why my wedding gown had been made from Cersei's scraps. That was why they had given me a suitcase full of garbage as a wedding gift. They simply wanted me gone.

I closed my eyes, but the tears I had been holding back finally fell, splashing onto the agreement.

Tears meant nothing to people who didn't love you.

With my parents urging me to hurry, I picked up the pen. My hand trembled as I signed my name.

If this was what they wanted, then I would give it to them.

A ruined wedding gown and two signatures were a small price to pay for finally seeing the truth.

I had barely set down the pen when my phone rang.

It was Raphael.

He told me he'd sent a driver to pick up my entire family.

I lowered my eyes and said as steadily as I could, "They made other plans. They can't attend our wedding."

It hurt to admit to the man I was about to marry that my family didn't care enough to attend my wedding.

Raphael didn't know what had happened, but he seemed to sense something was wrong. He didn't push me.

He simply told me we'd talk when we saw each other.

After the call, I packed a few things. I carried my suitcase out, ready to leave without looking back.

Mom stopped me.

"Take the trash bags from the kitchen and bathroom down with you. I shouldn't have to remind you about something so simple!"

"All right."

I nodded. And just like that, the last tiny bit of hope I had left disappeared.

Strangely, I wasn't even angry anymore.

I just felt calm. Then Cersei jumped up, pulled Antonio along, and insisted on walking me downstairs.

The moment we stepped outside, she froze. A Rolls-Royce Phantom was waiting at the curb, with four bodyguards standing beside it.

Then Cersei burst out laughing. "Oh, Lilith... You and Raphael are making yourselves miserable just to keep up appearances! Renting that car and hiring four men must have cost more than the two of you earn in six months. Why do this to yourselves?"

One of Raphael's men frowned and started to speak.

I stopped him with a slight shake of my head, then handed him my suitcase.

I got into the car and looked back at Cersei. She was leaning against Antonio, laughing so hard that tears streamed down her face.

"See you at the wedding."

There was no point explaining anything. They would see the truth soon enough.

The next few days on Raphael's private island were some of the happiest days of my life.

We spent almost every moment together, and for once, I felt completely at peace.

Everything that had happened back home already felt far away.

At an auction, Raphael bought me a one-of-a-kind antique wedding gown that had once been worn by royalty.

He also hired a team of 100 professionals to build the wedding venue exactly the way I wanted it. All I had to do was tell them what I liked.

The day before the wedding, Raphael took his private jet to pick up his father.

I went with the staff to inspect the ballroom one last time.

That was when Cersei and the others arrived.

Cersei wore a fitted gown and clung to Antonio's arm.

Mom and Dad had obviously never seen anything so luxurious. They stared at everything around them and marveled aloud at every little detail.

Antonio's bodyguards followed close behind.

The four of them made such a scene that other guests began turning to stare.

Then they saw me. All four froze.

Cersei was the first to recover.

"Lilith, what are you doing here?"

Her eyes suddenly lit up as if she'd figured it out.

"Oh, I know. You work here, don't you? I told you that poor fiancé of yours was useless. Your wedding is tomorrow, and he still makes you work!"

A nearby staff member stared at Cersei in disbelief and opened her mouth to correct her.

I motioned for her to let it go and return to work.

Then one of Cersei's friends looked me over curiously.

"Cersei, do you know her? How could someone dressed that cheaply possibly belong at Mr. Di Lauro's wedding?"

Before Cersei could answer, Mom quickly cut in, "Oh, she's a housekeeper who used to work for us. We fired her after a few days. We barely know her."

She was so afraid I might embarrass her that she wouldn't even admit I was her daughter.

Once, that would've broken my heart.

Now, I almost wanted to laugh.

For years, I had mistaken obedience for love and convinced myself that if I gave enough, they would eventually love me back.

I couldn't believe I'd been that blind.

"I was going to pretend I knew nothing and let you walk away. But then you tried to poison Raphael and me."I opened the bottle. The moment Cersei saw what I was doing, panic filled her eyes. She shook her head frantically and struggled against the guards, but they held her firmly in place. All she managed to do was hurt herself. When the bottle was pressed to Cersei's lips, I finally saw real fear and regret in her eyes."Remember this feeling, Cersei. This is what Mom felt before you killed her! No. She must have suffered even more, because you were the child she favored for years."Cersei stopped struggling. She stopped begging. She swallowed the wine, one mouthful after another. Then she curled into a ball on the floor and waited to die.Five minutes passed. Then 10. But nothing happened.Cersei slowly looked up.Realizing she was still alive, she stumbled to her feet and stared at me."W-why? Why am I still alive? Why didn't you kill me?"I looked into her swollen, confused eyes.

I returned from my business trip.To my surprise, Cersei had already packed her things and was ready to leave. Before leaving, she'd prepared a full dinner for us.Her eyes were red as she poured each of us a glass of wine."Lilith, thank you for putting the past aside and helping Dad and me. I'd like to toast you. Raphael, thank you too for taking care of me while I was here. I promise I'll never bother either of you again."Raphael didn't even look at her. He ran a finger around the rim of his glass without saying a word.I picked up my wine and glanced at Cersei. Her hands were trembling. I decided to give her one last chance."Cersei, is there nothing else you want to say to me?"Cersei flinched as if I'd hit her.Her eyes darted nervously to Raphael, then back to me.She forced a stiff smile."Lilith, I-I have nothing else to say."I nodded and raised my glass toward Raphael.Raphael looked at me for a moment, then gave me a helpless smile. He raised his glass and gently clinked i

I was being driven across the city for work when Cersei suddenly appeared.Like a madwoman, she ran straight into the path of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. If the driver had reacted even a second later, we would've hit her head-on.He swerved, but the side of the car still clipped her and sent her crashing onto the pavement. Her calf was torn open to the bone, and blood poured down her leg.I watched silently from the back seat and felt almost nothing. She might as well have been a stranger. Even I was surprised by how calm I felt.I was about to tell my bodyguards to take her to the hospital when Cersei forced herself to her feet and threw herself across the hood. She sobbed as she tried to shout something at me.After a moment, I told the driver to roll down my window. Her desperate sobs immediately filled the car."Lilith, M-Mom had a heart attack. We found her too late. They couldn't save her! Dad owes a fortune in gambling debts. He mortgaged the house, but it still wasn't enough. The

Panic flashed across Mom's face, but she forced herself to stay calm."What do you mean? What does this have to do with Cersei?"The man said nothing. He simply snapped his fingers. His men stepped forward and dropped a stack of loan and mortgage papers in front of Mom."Your daughter lost two point four million dollars at my boss's casino. She mortgaged this house to us. Even after that, she still owes six hundred thousand dollars. You have one month to pay up. If you don't, you'll have to deal with the consequences."Mom shook her head in disbelief. With trembling hands, she flipped through the documents. Every signature was Cersei's."Impossible! T-these signatures have to be forged! Cersei would never gamble, let alone lose that kind of money!"The man had heard enough. He ordered his men to throw Mom out of the house. She hit the curb hard and lay there trembling.Mom reached for her phone to call the police, but before she could dial, Cersei rushed over and snatched it from her h

Our wedding went ahead as planned. It was grand and beautiful, like something out of a fairy tale. The Don himself walked me down the aisle to Raphael.Surrounded by cheers and well wishes, we exchanged our vows and sealed them with a kiss. After the wedding, Raphael and I left for our monthlong honeymoon.During the trip, I learned that Antonio's wedding had also gone ahead as planned—just without Cersei. His new bride was Maria Conti, the second daughter of the Conti capo.Antonio refused to return any of Cersei's wedding gifts. Instead, he claimed they were compensation for the trouble she'd caused him.Cersei was furious. She and Dad went to confront him, but they didn't even make it through the door.Instead, Antonio's men led them to a casino. They told Cersei that if she wanted her wedding gifts back, she would have to win them back herself.Of course, she didn't. Worse, she and Dad ended up gambling away their remaining shares in the logistics company.By then, none of it had a

Antonio looked back and forth between Raphael and me, completely stunned."Your wife? Lilith is your wife?"Cersei didn't look worried at all. If anything, she seemed amused."Antonio, don't tell me you actually believe this. My poor brother-in-law obviously hired these people to put on another show. What are you so scared of?"Dad gave Raphael a look of disgust."Raphael, we know you just happen to have the same name as the Don's heir. Stop pretending."Mom shook her head at me in disappointment."Lilith, it's a worthless necklace. Why did you have to make such a huge scene over it? How did I ever give birth to a daughter like you?"Antonio was covered in a cold sweat. He spun around and glared at the three of them."What are you talking about? He's the Don's heir! This is Mr. Di Lauro!"Cersei stared at Raphael in disbelief. The man she had mocked as a low-level employee who opened car doors was actually the Don's heir. She didn't want to believe it.But the terror on Antonio's face
