I showed Jidenna the picture immediately.

He woke up, saw the picture of us kissing in our own bedroom, and his face changed to anger, not fear.

"Someone entered my compound. Someone put camera in my house."

He called his security head instantly. "Check every corner of this mansion. Check every window. Someone took a picture of my bedroom last night from outside. Find the camera now!"

Then I showed him the message: "Ask him where he was for 2 days after accident. Body found Wednesday, accident happened Monday."

He sat down on the bed, his head in his hands. He was shaking.

"Amara, that... that part is true. The police file says accident happened Monday night. But Sophia's body was found Wednesday morning by farmers. For 2 days, I was... I was not there."

"Where were you?" I asked, my voice shaking.

He looked at me with tears.

"I ran. After the accident, after I saw Sophia dead, I was in shock. Blood everywhere. I pulled her out of the car but she was already dead. I was covered in blood. I was scared that people would say I killed her. I was scared of her family. So I left her body there and I ran into the bush. I ran and ran. I stayed in the bush for 2 days, just sitting, covered in her blood, not eating, not drinking, just crying. I wanted to die there too. On Wednesday, a farmer saw me and called police. That's when they found her body. I have never told anyone this. Not even my lawyer. Everyone thinks I went to hospital that night."

He was crying seriously now.

"I was a coward, Amara. I left my wife's body on the road for 2 days. I am not a killer, but I am a coward. That is my shame. That is why her family hates me so much. Because they said if I really loved her, I would have carried her body and run to hospital, not run into bush."

I hugged him tight. My husband was not a killer. He was just a man who lost his wife and was too shocked to think.

"Jidenna, it's okay. You were in shock. Anyone would be in shock. You didn't kill her."

He held me. "Thank you for believing me, Amara. No one believed me."

Just then, his security head came in with a small black camera. "Oga, we found it. It was hidden in the tree opposite your bedroom window. It has been there for weeks."

Jidenna collected it and broke it with his hand.

"Who planted it? Check CCTV."

"We checked, Oga. It was Kene. He came to visit 3 weeks ago when you were in Abuja. He stayed for 2 hours in the garden."

Kene again. His own brother.

Jidenna's phone rang. It was his mother.

"Jidenna! Turn on TV now! News! Channel 5! Kene is on TV! He is telling the whole world you killed Sophia and you are now using a small tailor girl for rituals!"

We turned on TV.

There, Kene was on live news, crying fake tears, with Blessing and Tari beside him.

"My brother Jidenna Cole killed his wife Sophia Adeyemi and left her body in the bush for 2 days! He is a ritualist! And now he has married a poor tailor from Peter Odili road to use her for ritual to clean his sins! This tailor, Amara Johnson, is in danger! Her family should come and carry her before he kills her too!"

Tari added, "Yes! Amara was my fiancee! Jidenna snatched her from me and wants to kill her!"

The TV presenter said, "We have contacted the police and they said they are reopening the case based on new evidence from the family."

Jidenna switched off the TV. His hands were shaking with anger.

"My own brother wants to destroy me on live TV. With my ex-employee and my wife's cousin."

I held his hand, but I was also scared. The whole Nigeria was now watching.

"Jidenna, what will we do? Police will come again. Your company shares will fall. Everyone will think you are killer."

He looked at me, then suddenly knelt down in front of me. He brought out a small box again. Not diamond ring for show. A simple gold ring.

"Amara, I know our marriage started as contract. 30 days, 20 million. But I don't want contract anymore. I want real. I want you to be my real wife. Not because my mother wants. Not because Kene is plotting. But because I love you. I think I fell in love with you that night in the rain when you were crying and still strong."

He opened the box. "Will you marry me again? For real this time? Not 30 days. For life? Will you be Mrs. Cole for real, and stand with me against my brother and the whole world?"

My eyes filled with tears. My 30-day contract husband was proposing to me for real. On his knees.

Outside, police siren was coming. They were coming to arrest him because of Kene's TV interview.

If I say yes, I will be wife of a man accused of murder, and my own life may be in danger.

If I say no, I will take my 20 million and go, and he will face this alone.

What should I do?

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER TWENTY: The real wedding

The drums in Umuleri started beating at 6am. Today, I, Amara, will marry Jidenna again, but this time, not for 6 months contract. For love. For lifetime. For real. My uncle insisted on a real traditional wedding after hospital. He called Jidenna at midnight after we left the hospital in Lagos and said, "That contract wedding you did in Lagos court is not a wedding. That one started as 3 months after Emeka, who was working for Jidenna, on Amara's wedding night, and she was crying outside in the rain, and Jidenna, Emeka's boss, saw her once and helped her. I did not give my brother's daughter away then on behalf of my late brother. We must do it properly now in village, so village people will know she is not contract wife, she is real wife." So here we are. Umuleri village square. Red sand everywhere. White and red canopies. Plastic chairs. Goat meat smell. Palm wine calabash. My village people sitting, gossiping, but this time not about my naked picture that Vanessa leaked. Abo

Amara woke up in hospital.White sheets. Beeping machine. Jidenna sleeping beside her bed, holding her hand tight, his head on the bed. His eyes were swollen. He had not slept since she fainted in Lekki."You fainted," he whispered when she opened her eyes. "You have been sleeping for six hours. Doctor said it's stress and shock from everything."Amara remembered immediately. Village WhatsApp group. 98 unread messages. Her naked picture sent to her village. Her uncle is the admin of the group because her father is not alive. Her father died three years ago. Her uncle, her father's younger brother, is now head of family. She grabbed her phone fast from the bedside table. Jidenna tried to stop her, "Amara, don't check, please, rest."But Amara shook her head. Genius wife must face problem, not run away from it. She opened WhatsApp with shaking hands.Group name: "Umuleri Progressive Union" - 98 unread messages. She scrolled from top, heart beating fast.First message: Her naked picture,

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: Sophia 's secret

Lekki Phase 1, House 14, was dark. Amara entered alone, as Vanessa instructed. Her phone was on silent, tracker blinking in her braid. Jidenna and the detective were two streets away in an unmarked car, watching her dot move. Vanessa opened the door herself. She was beautiful, even in anger. Tall, light skin, short hair, wearing a red dress. The same dress Sophia wore in one old picture. "You came," Vanessa said, smiling. "Genius wife. You really love him, abi? Contract wife falling in love with her boss." Amara walked inside. The house smelled of alcohol. Bottles everywhere. On the couch, Ifunanya, the lawyer, was tied, eyes swollen from crying. She was alive. "Let her go," Amara said. "You have me." Vanessa laughed and locked the door. "Let her go? No. She is my witness. She saw Sophia sign the real will. She knows the fake will I made will not stand in court." Ifunanya shook her head violently, trying to speak through tape. Vanessa poured wine. "Do you know why I hate Soph

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: The call

The phone was still ringing on the marble floor. Unknown number. The same number that sent the naked picture. The same number that sent the second picture of us in the living room. Vanessa was calling Amara directly. Twenty-three staff were still locked in the living room. One Tecno phone on the floor had no owner. The owner refused to claim it. That phone took the live picture of us one hour ago and sent it to press outside. That person was still inside this house. Jidenna looked at Amara. Amara's hands were shaking, but her eyes were sharp. That genius eyes that made Jidenna hire her as contract wife in the first place. "Answer it," Jidenna whispered. "Put it on speaker." Amara knelt and picked her phone. Her voice was cold. "Hello." A soft laugh came from the other side. A laugh Amara knew. Everyone in Lagos social circle knew that laugh. "Amara. The contract wife. How are you enjoying my house? My man?" Vanessa. Jidenna's first love. Sophia's best friend before Sophia d

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER SIXTEEN: Blood money

The banging on the main gate got louder BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. It was not a knock. Someone was hitting it with a car. David's radio was screaming. "Sir! Press van trying to force gate! And madam's mother is shouting! She says if you don't open she will climb!" My mother climbing a gate? My mother who cannot walk fast without her knee pain? That alone told me something was terribly wrong. Jidenna looked at me. His eyes were asking me one question. What does your mother have to do with this? I didn't know. I swear I didn't know. "Open the small gate for her only," Jidenna ordered into David's radio. "No press. If any press enters, shoot in the air." David ran. The living room was still locked down. Twenty-three staff, twenty-three phones on the floor. The garden boy with the iPhone was now kneeling, crying. "Sir, I no know wetin dey for the video! Emeka say make I delete am, he go give me ten thousand!" The detective slapped handcuffs on him. "You will explain at the st

  • My fiance boss wants me.   CHAPTER FIFTEEN: The insider

The driver never reached the back door. David moved like a man half his size. He lunged, grabbed the driver by his collar, and slammed him hard against the wall. The sound echoed through the whole living room. The driver's cheap phone flew out of his hand and skidded across our marble floor, stopping near my feet. "Emeka! Na Emeka pay me!" He was shouting and crying at the same time, his hands up. "He pay me fifty thousand to cut the wire! He say na just for fifteen minutes! I no know about any picture, sir, I swear!" Jidenna didn't shout. That was what scared me most. His face went completely quiet. That cold, deadly quiet I had only seen once before. "Bring Emeka to me," he said to David, his voice low. "Now." But Mama Nkechi, our cook who has been with us for five years, was already shaking her head, tears running down her face. "He comot, sir. Ten minutes ago. He say him mama dey call am for village. He use kitchen door." He had run. Before anyone could move, my phone buzz
