NIKOLAI VOLKOV

On the way to the mansion, my mind was already racing, calculating every move I would make to expose that fraud. Then, glancing sideways, a cruel and involuntary smile curved the corner of my mouth.

There she was. My deformed bride. Huddled in the opposite corner of the limousine, trying to take up as little space as possible. The veil still covered her face, a last pathetic refuge.

The irony was so biting that I needed to voice it.

"Why the fear, Mrs. Valkov?" my voice sounded low and harsh inside the car. "Didn't you yourself try to enter the wolf's cave?"

She shuddered, but didn't answer. Her silence was more irritating than any response. Before I could poke the little monster any further, the car stopped.

“We’ve arrived.” She would make her whole family pay soon, starting with her. Seeing the mansion gates opening, the flashes in my mind returned like the force of a punch…

The Bratva party, two years ago…

The dim lighting of the party, the muffled sound of expensive jazz, the scent of power and perfume in the air. And then, her. Victoria Harrington. Blonde, slender, wearing a dress that cost more than most men's cars. And her blue eyes… they promised everything and meant nothing.

She was the one who pulled me into the garden. Her audacity almost made me laugh, almost.

"We can't be watched, Mr. Volkov," he whispered, his fingers sliding down my arm before settling at the nape of my neck.

And then, his lips met mine. The kiss was bold, imbued with a trained sensuality that knew how to provoke a response. And my body responded, of course it responded. Any man with blood in his veins would have yielded.

But I am not driven solely by desire. I am driven by calculation.

She stepped back an inch, breathless, a triumphant, victorious smile on her lips.

"I don't think he's as cold as they say, because he apparently liked my kiss. After all, he was so quiet, but…" His hand moved down from my chest, a deliberately slow and provocative touch. "...Another man would have taken me right here in the garden."

The desire that had been boiling inside me froze instantly, transformed into contempt. "Taken?" As if I were just another hungry dog chasing after a crumb she condescended to throw.

I pushed her away with a coldness that made her smile fade. My voice came out low and sharp.

— Don't mistake my silence for weakness, Miss Harrington. And don't think your offer is something I desire.

His eyes widened. Arrogance gave way to a glint of disbelief.

"I don't want you," I continued, each word a knife plunged into her inflated ego. "Not now. Not ever. Save your kisses for someone who likes easy women."

The tears came quickly, but they were tears of wounded pride, not of pain. And it didn't move me. I'm not moved.

I turned my back and left her there, trembling with anger and humiliation. At that moment, I thought it was the end. A closed chapter. A small insult that a spoiled girl would get over.

NIKOLAI VALKOVShe shuddered; I know she was afraid of me, and that was exactly what I wanted from that deformed creature. But something in her eyes changed. Fear gave way to a despair so deep and genuine that it seemed to dissolve the panic for a moment."Why?" the question came out again, but this time it wasn't a whisper. It was a muffled cry, laden with a pain that went far beyond fear of me. "Why do you hate me so much?""Because you agreed!" I yelled back, momentarily losing control. "You were part of their plan! It's written all over your face!"That's when she exploded. Not violently, but with a torrent of trembling, desperate words, as if a dam built over years had suddenly burst.I already told you that's not true and…"Do you really think I'm going to fall for your lies?" I asked, interrupting her sarcastically."Is it really so impossible for the all-powerful Nikolai Volkov to discover the truth about me? I n

NIKOLAI VOLKOVThe fortress in Moscow was silent, but the echo of the council meeting still buzzed in my ears, louder than any other sound. Seated at my desk, I didn't review smuggling reports or troop movement updates. I was reading Dunyavin's updates. Dry reports, written in Agnessa's firm and economical hand:"Day 14. The lady ate everything. She spent the afternoon in the library. She asked for more paper.""Day 16. The lady read late into the night. She slept well. She lit the fireplace by herself.""Day 18. Mrs. Valkov eats well, enjoys the library, and reads a lot. She likes to write down what she learns in the notebook she asked me for. She has never tried to run away."The last line seemed to leap off the page. "You never tried to run away." Not out of loyalty, of course. Because I had nowhere to go. The logic was clear, but a part of me insisted on seeing it as an acceptance, a surrender I hadn't earned.I pressed a key

NIKOLAI VOLKOVAlmost three weeks. Three weeks of hunting, cold-bloodedness, and ruthless strategy. Now, in my office, I stared at the final report. The entire arms shipment was back in my possession. I could almost feel Ivan Chernov's impotent fury from across town, and the thought filled me with a deep, silent, sadistic pleasure. The tension of the last few days, however, was still etched into my muscles, a toxic residue that needed to be purged. I decided to celebrate. Not in a fancy restaurant, but at Klyk Zimy, my private club. A basement of exposed brick, blue and red neon, dense smoke, and the heavy rhythm of industrial music. It was a place for men in my world to let loose. Strong drinks, cigarettes, and the devochki—the girls—who understood the unspoken rules of a BDSM club. Brutality was a frank language there, and I needed to speak it.I chose a dark corner, a glass of frozen vodka in my hand. My eyes scanned the room, assessing two beautiful an

ANGELINE HARRIGTON Upon realizing this, I felt a different kind of chill run down my spine. He was defining the boundaries of my prison, and it was a bigger cage than I had imagined. A cage with a library."Thank you, Agnessa," I said, trying to keep my voice calm. I picked up a stack of books. "Can I ask you one more thing?""Yes, ma'am. I'm here to receive orders." The phrase sounded so strange coming from her. Orders. To her, I wasn't a prisoner giving orders; I was a channel, a transmitter of Nikolai's desires.Could you get me a notebook? And a pen?She frowned slightly. Notebook and pen. They weren't clothes, they weren't food. They were tools. Tools for thinking, for remembering, perhaps to let me mentally escape that hell for a little while. She didn't fully understand, but nodded in agreement. "I'll do it."We walked back to my room in silence. Lunch awaited me: another substantial meal. I ate in silence, under Agnessa'

ANGELINE HARRINGTONStrength, a strange visitor, was slowly returning. The substantial breakfast, the warm clothes, the simple act of not shivering from the cold—all of this was a kind of new fuel. And, most crucially, my bedroom door was no longer truly locked. Agnessa had left it ajar, a silent gesture that could have been either a calculated oversight or a minimal concession. It didn't matter. It was a loophole.Dressed in the felt boots that protected me from the cold stone floor, I went out. The corridor ahead of me was long and dark, lit only by a few dim lamps attached to the walls. The dirt and neglect were evident: fine tapestries, now covered in dust and torn in places, dark wood furniture, were covered in cobwebs and splinters. In its glory days, the Dunyavin mansion must have been dazzling. A palace hidden in the Ural Mountains. Now, it was just an empty shell, a den.I felt a stupid, almost romantic impulse to imagine what it would be like to

ANGELINE HARRINGTONFrom what little I knew of Nicolai, from instinct and the terror he inspired in me, one thing seemed certain: he was not a man to repent. An order given by him was like a law engraved in stone—immutable, fatal. But something, some unknown mechanism in his impenetrable mind, began to work. Perhaps it wasn't repentance. Perhaps it was just an annoyance, the same feeling you get from a piece of furniture that's out of place. Be that as it may, something changed. Because today, the shadow that watched over this prison finally materialized before me.I woke up shivering twice as much. A deep chill had settled over me during the night, and not even the fluffy fabrics or socks could lessen my uncontrollable trembling. Through the small, dirty window, I saw the outside world transformed into a white and gray blur. The snow had thickened twice as much. I needed to warm up, because if I didn't, I was sure I wouldn't survive. The cell-like room was freezin
