I had never had a longer ride from the Thamore mansion to the house. It felt like, instead of progressing, every turn on the motorway or every car we overtook set me a step backwards. By the time the huge black iron gates finally come into view, my mind and body are exhausted.

I feel like the weight of my mind can't be supported by my legs any more. My legs are giving way, and I am a bit sad to see that even though Lucien knew that I was around, he had not come down to see me. I step into the house, and Theo meets me at the door.

"Hi," he waves awkwardly at me as he stands a few steps away from me. He looks as though any small move towards me would make me break into a thousand pieces, and maybe he was not thinking it, and maybe I was the one projecting, but it did not make it better to think of it that way.

I had tried all day to avoid looking in his eyes because I was scared that even though I was fearful of him touching me, I wanted him to. I stare at it like it is some sort of UFO. "You don't know how to play Snakes and Ladders?" he asked when he noticed my confusion.
