LUCIEN

Her being so close to me felt a bit strange; her scent filled my nose as I tried to find out what it was. "Vanilla", I blurt, unable to help myself.

"What?" She looked up at me, her face scarred with bruises. I wonder if she intentionally left them exposed for me to see, or maybe she was comfortable with them on her.

"You smell like vanilla," I say, and then I begin to wonder why I had just blurted that out once again.

"Oh, it's the bath wash," she said, raising her hand to her nose and sniffing it gently. "I guess you know nothing about it, and those women were probably the ones who chose it," she added, and I nod because she was right. I had told them to make sure that the room was fit for her use. I was going to use her for my revenge but it did not mean I was going to treat her like her father did.

"Your face is bruised," I say, and she instinctively gently raises her hand to her face as if she were trying to cover it up. "Did something happen to you?" I ask. I wonder why I want to indulge in the details from her, but maybe it would be good for the basis of our relationship; breaking all of the stereotypes she already had of me would be good as well, at least according to Theo.

"Yeah," she said as if she did not know what else she was supposed to respond with. She bent her head, showing that she was not comfortable with me pointing it out.

"Do you need to go see the doctor?" I ask, and she lifts her head with her eye still facing down.

"Are you going to come with me?" She asked as if she were challenging me. I shake my head slowly, and she smiles at me; it is faint and kind of sad, but it has an electrifying feel. "Of course not; I was not expecting the answer to be yes, but I felt it might be fun to ask either way," she added and lifted her head to face me squarely.

"They can help you get to the doctor's office to get treated; those bruises might be more fatal than you think," I say, a bit concerned by the state her face was in. I had seen pictures of her in the wedding dress and the person sitting across from me now did not seem like the same person in the pictures.

"It's fine," she said in a dismissive tone, making it seem like I was worried about nothing; that only made my chest tighten. "If they can get me a first aid box, I can treat it myself." It was almost like she was telling me she had survived worse, but the words never came. I sigh and beckon to the woman who had been standing by, waiting for any instructions. She moves swiftly towards me and bows her head slightly.

"Get a doctor to come see her," I say, and the woman nods before going away. She had worked here for the last five years, and I was sure that she was not going to make any mistakes; she knew the right thing to do when guests came over. The emotion I was feeling felt wrong and out of place; it was not part of the plan, caring.

"You are making a big deal out of nothing," she said as she winced while trying to act as though it was nothing.

"You just flinched. That is not nothing." She stopped and stared at me as if she were trying to unravel what was going on.

"Am I not here as a scapegoat for something?" she asked without a beat. It was as if she had been waiting for me to say something along those lines. She wanted to know why she came here. "Why did I come here? Why did you make me come here?"

“Not everything has a reason; some things just happen. We got married and that's all," I interject. She is smarter than she looks. Myaeb would have helped Enoch's business better than his son, who was currently ruining everything with his poor decisions.

"Did you just decide to marry me? We've never met, and in no world is that normal," she threw back at me. I had not expected her to get confrontational with me. I lean in and shake my head.

"I guess I am not normal, right?" I smirk, and she looks at me unimpressed by my choice of words. "At least not according to the rumours."

"You want to know a lot, but the truth is that the less you know, the safer you are," I say. It's too early to let her know she was going to work against her family. "I am your husband now, and that is all that matters."

She puckered her lips as if she wanted to say something, but then they slowly fell, and she settled into her chair. "I hear you have more rules of things I am not allowed to do, so let's hear them," she said, finally giving up on getting any information from me.

"Well, it's simple; no one must know who I am throughout."

"Well, I do not have anyone to tell about this, so you can be sure your secret is safe with me," she shot back. It was obvious she was mad about something, but she was trying her best to hold it down. "Is that all?" she asked, pushing herself off the seat.

"We haven't had dinner yet."

"I am not really hungry," she said and then paused, her eyes flickering as if she remembered something before she lowered herself down to the chair. "What do you think about having a family?" she asked suddenly and the intention of what she means is not hidden at all.

"Why do you ask?" I avert her question because I have to know what made her think that far.

"I can do everything you want, but definitely not that," she said, and I frowned.

"Not what?"

"Sex" – the word hung in the air like a challenge. I didn’t flinch, but inside, something shifted.    This girl… she was going to be a problem.

  • I Married My Father's Enemy   THE END

NIRELLETWO YEARS LATER. Lucien had insisted on a party for the boys, even though all they wanted to do was run around the house and destroy all of the things I thought were the right decorations for the house. The party was lavish with all the important people around. I had made some friends, but I was still sceptical about each of them. I did not want to be in a situation where I was pushed to do evil because of the friends I had. They had all shown respect for my face so far, but I knew that things like that did not last for long. If they ever had the opportunity to switch ships for any reason best known to them, then they were going to do it without thinking twice, and I knew it."Congratulations, Mrs Vexley," Rain, one of the women, had said. "It's so nice seeing the boys grow.""Thank you," I say, beaming with pride."I am sure they would grow to be little heartbreakers; just at two years, and they are already so stunning to look at." Ardian and Aiden had turned out to be two be

  • I Married My Father's Enemy    BORN IN LOVE

TIMOTHY"I am definitely not going to walk down the aisle and entertain guests while my stomach is still as big as this." Nirelle shook her head. I had been convincing her that we had to get married before the babies came, but she refused, and no amount of pleading on my part seemed to convince her even a bit."It's going to be a closed wedding and...""I already said no, didn't I?" She tilted her head. She had been on edge lately; with the baby on the way, she was getting scared at every concern. What if I did worse things for my kids? Would I also be a bad mother?. Every time I managed to assure her that she was already doing so well, and the babies weren't here yet. Once we had the babies in our hands, then she would feel better."But why?""Because we are going to have pictures, and I do not want a big belly showing in the images.""It's going to be a private wedding, so you do not have to..." A painful gasp from her lisp made me stop. I held her arm gently as she began breathing

  • I Married My Father's Enemy    CHAINS AND CLOSURE

NIRELLEI had never dreaded that I would walk through prison walls to see my mother or anyone. I had no idea why I wanted to see my mother. "You might want some kind of closure," Theo had said when I announced at breakfast that I wanted to see my mom.Lucien scrunched up his face in disgust, and Zane said that no matter how I explained it, he could not understand why. I had no idea why. Could it be that I wanted an apology? Could it be that I needed them to hear why she did it, even though it was clear that she was being selfish?I sit in the cold room that feels just a little better than the one she locked Michael in for years. I swallow multiple times as I sit in the chair. Even the presence of the two bodyguards behind me did not make me feel better. Yvette was never going to hurt me, but Lucien did not like the idea of me walking her by myself, and the only condition he had was that I bring the guards with me.I should have gotten used to it by now, but I could not. The feeling of

  • I Married My Father's Enemy   A FAIRYTALE REDONE

NIRELLE"We are going to be late.""Just a moment," I shout back to Zane, who was waiting for me while I ran around in the room trying to make myself look good. Lucien had told me that we had another event to attend; apparently, it was a charity ball where we had to buy expensive things to give to charity. I liked the idea of it, but I was not really up to wanting to go out. He asked Zane to bring me along, and he was going to meet us there.I pop my head through the closet door already fully dressed, just trying to match the perfect shoes to the dress that did intend to kill my legs. "It is not like we are the ones to open the event," I chime in before my body disappears once again from view."We aren't opening the event, but I think it would be weird for us to walk in when everyone is already seated.""If you had told me about the event a little earlier, then I would have been ready when you needed me to be," I add. Lucien had already told me about it this morning, and no matter the

  • I Married My Father's Enemy   LOVE IN THE ORDINARY

NIRELLE"I missed this so much." I snuggled into Lucien's arms more than before; if it were possible, I might have even tried to enter his body. He kissed me gently on my hair, and I felt all the cells in my body respond."I am sorry that it had to hurt you this way.""But you only did it because you had to," I murmur, my finger making continuous circles around his chest. "I know that if you didn't have to, then you wouldn't have done it."His voice drops as he goes on. "I heard that bastard was going to try to rape you once more.""Don't you dare blame yourself for something like that," I say, lifting my head a bit. The victims should never blame themselves for the perpetrators. Even if things were different with us and we had done better, they would have still done it because they do not care about us.""I was so focused on the revenge that I might have hurt you in the process," he murmured, taking my fingers and intertwining his between them. "I won't have been able to forgive myse

  • I Married My Father's Enemy   CIRCLES AROUND US

NIRELLE"Let's go to the hospital to be sure." Lucien pulled away and held my face with a sad smile on his face."To be sure? Sure of what?""When you were rescued, you couldn't go to the hospital. Mae came to see you, and I am sure that you couldn't get the test done. Let them do a comprehensive test just to be sure that you are okay."I nod, as this was not how I wanted to tell him about the baby. I had something cute planned, but now he was going to ruin it. His hand dropped from my face, and I cleared my throat."I have something to say.""You do not have to ask me for permission to talk," he murmured as he started the engine."Yes, I know that, but it is important." My voice sounds a bit mysterious. He looks at me, and I stay with a straight face. I do not want to give away how happy my heart was at that time."What is it?" His eyes widen, and his smile falters a bit. "Did something happen? Something I should know about?""Yes," I stop myself to build the suspense a bit, and he l
