LUCIEN

Her being so close to me felt a bit strange; her scent filled my nose as I tried to find out what it was. "Vanilla", I blurt, unable to help myself.

"What?" She looked up at me, her face scarred with bruises. I wonder if she intentionally left them exposed for me to see, or maybe she was comfortable with them on her.

"You smell like vanilla," I say, and then I begin to wonder why I had just blurted that out once again.

"Oh, it's the bath wash," she said, raising her hand to her nose and sniffing it gently. "I guess you know nothing about it, and those women were probably the ones who chose it," she added, and I nod because she was right. I had told them to make sure that the room was fit for her use. I was going to use her for my revenge but it did not mean I was going to treat her like her father did.

"Your face is bruised," I say, and she instinctively gently raises her hand to her face as if she were trying to cover it up. "Did something happen to you?" I ask. I wonder why I want to indulge in the details from her, but maybe it would be good for the basis of our relationship; breaking all of the stereotypes she already had of me would be good as well, at least according to Theo.

"Yeah," she said as if she did not know what else she was supposed to respond with. She bent her head, showing that she was not comfortable with me pointing it out.

"Do you need to go see the doctor?" I ask, and she lifts her head with her eye still facing down.

"Are you going to come with me?" She asked as if she were challenging me. I shake my head slowly, and she smiles at me; it is faint and kind of sad, but it has an electrifying feel. "Of course not; I was not expecting the answer to be yes, but I felt it might be fun to ask either way," she added and lifted her head to face me squarely.

"They can help you get to the doctor's office to get treated; those bruises might be more fatal than you think," I say, a bit concerned by the state her face was in. I had seen pictures of her in the wedding dress and the person sitting across from me now did not seem like the same person in the pictures.

"It's fine," she said in a dismissive tone, making it seem like I was worried about nothing; that only made my chest tighten. "If they can get me a first aid box, I can treat it myself." It was almost like she was telling me she had survived worse, but the words never came. I sigh and beckon to the woman who had been standing by, waiting for any instructions. She moves swiftly towards me and bows her head slightly.

"Get a doctor to come see her," I say, and the woman nods before going away. She had worked here for the last five years, and I was sure that she was not going to make any mistakes; she knew the right thing to do when guests came over. The emotion I was feeling felt wrong and out of place; it was not part of the plan, caring.

"You are making a big deal out of nothing," she said as she winced while trying to act as though it was nothing.

"You just flinched. That is not nothing." She stopped and stared at me as if she were trying to unravel what was going on.

"Am I not here as a scapegoat for something?" she asked without a beat. It was as if she had been waiting for me to say something along those lines. She wanted to know why she came here. "Why did I come here? Why did you make me come here?"

“Not everything has a reason; some things just happen. We got married and that's all," I interject. She is smarter than she looks. Myaeb would have helped Enoch's business better than his son, who was currently ruining everything with his poor decisions.

"Did you just decide to marry me? We've never met, and in no world is that normal," she threw back at me. I had not expected her to get confrontational with me. I lean in and shake my head.

"I guess I am not normal, right?" I smirk, and she looks at me unimpressed by my choice of words. "At least not according to the rumours."

"You want to know a lot, but the truth is that the less you know, the safer you are," I say. It's too early to let her know she was going to work against her family. "I am your husband now, and that is all that matters."

She puckered her lips as if she wanted to say something, but then they slowly fell, and she settled into her chair. "I hear you have more rules of things I am not allowed to do, so let's hear them," she said, finally giving up on getting any information from me.

"Well, it's simple; no one must know who I am throughout."

"Well, I do not have anyone to tell about this, so you can be sure your secret is safe with me," she shot back. It was obvious she was mad about something, but she was trying her best to hold it down. "Is that all?" she asked, pushing herself off the seat.

"We haven't had dinner yet."

"I am not really hungry," she said and then paused, her eyes flickering as if she remembered something before she lowered herself down to the chair. "What do you think about having a family?" she asked suddenly and the intention of what she means is not hidden at all.

"Why do you ask?" I avert her question because I have to know what made her think that far.

"I can do everything you want, but definitely not that," she said, and I frowned.

"Not what?"

"Sex" – the word hung in the air like a challenge. I didn’t flinch, but inside, something shifted.    This girl… she was going to be a problem.

  • NIRELLE   THE FIRST MOVE ON THE CHESSBOARD

LUCIENWhen Enoch had come to me with a business proposal, he had said he would give anything to get a contract from us. His meeting with Theo had been nothing but him putting himself out plain for me to use as I pleased."Tell Mr Vexley that I can give him whatever he wants; all I need is his stamp of approval on this contract." Theo had relayed his words to me, and quite frankly, I was not in the least bit shocked. The man had a track record of being that way."So what do you want to do?" Theo had asked me that evening while we sipped whisky together in the minibar. "You have been waiting for a long time to take our revenge; is this finally going to be the time you do?" Theo was concerned about me.I had poured my entire time and energy into creating a brand around my name, not because I had the need to be rich but because, to punish those who made my life a living hell, I had to be on top of them and have them crawling back to me."Ask him to give his daughter to me," I say and The

  • NIRELLE   GHOST GROOM

NIRELLEThe man who has yet to introduce himself to me led me into the house. The entire house was gloomy but not bad; it had an ancient feel to it. Almost like an abandoned castle. The interior had gold- and silver-plated walls with huge art frames lining the hallway. I stare at them as I try to keep my step in line with the man ahead of me. The portraits in front of me do not tell any story; they look abstract, like they had no place there. The hallway was littered with abstract pieces of art here and there."He must like art," I murmur to myself as I walk ahead. Finally, the man with me stops, and I stop a few steps from him so I do not run into him. He turns and inspects me like he has never seen me before."I am Theo," the man said suddenly, causing me to wonder what my reaction should be. I let go of the hem of my dress that I had held up and dragged through the long hallway."I am Nirelle Thamore," I replied, sticking my hand out to him. He looks at my hand and with a frown on

  • NIRELLE   THE RIDE TO HELL

NRIELLEI look at my mom and wonder why she looks so happy. She was giving off the image of a woman who got to marry off her daughter into a happy home. It was such a pity that Yvette and Enoch hosted a celebration even when it was obvious that Lucien was never going to come. I sigh as I look around. Everyone was drinking and making merry as if I had just been offered the rarest opportunity, and it was a great thing. None of them here had seen Lucien before, yet they celebrated me being married to him."This is all I'm worth," I whisper as I hold the hem of my dress tightly. I wondered why they had gone through all the trouble to get me into a wedding gown and makeup to hide all the bruises they got on me. Why a party when the groom was not even going to attend?"When you get to the mansion, you will get the marriage certificate," Yvette had announced to me on the way to the reception hall. My entire family was dressed to the nines. Enoch and Cory had on a Tom Ford suit that was tailo

  • NIRELLE   THE HAND UNDERNEATH

WARNING THIS CHAPTER CONTAINS SOME DESCRIPTION OF ABUSE AND A LITTLE BIT OF VIOLENCE PLEASE SKIP IT IF YOU CANT HANDLE ITNIRELLEBy the time my mom is done with the makeup, I am barely able to recognise myself. I can not deny it; she has done a good job. I have never looked this good, and certainly not in the ten years I have lived here. I close my eyes and I remember the day my mom held my hand and led me into the Thamore mansion. She had told me that this was going to give us better lives, and I was so excited. I had never known my father and had always longed for a father figure in my life so my mates at school would stop making fun of me. I wanted to be loved by a father, but I got a nightmare instead. From the first night there, I felt Enoch's hand in inappropriate places, and I tried to overlook it. He was the father I needed, and so everything was good in my eyes. We were a perfect family with Cory as my elder brother; however, everything changed when, on my sixteenth birthda

  • NIRELLE   SOLD TO A GHOST

NIRELLE"Lucien Vexley?" I ask again, and she nods with a pout on her face. "It can't be." I trail off, my eyes darting around the room for my escape. I had to escape; there was no way I would get married to Lucien, even if my death was demanded.Lucien Vexley was the name of wealth in the city; every high-class person knew who he was, but the only catch was that no one knew what he looked like. He was the shadow businessman. He dealt with so much money that people said it was his way of protecting himself. There had been rumours that he must be a beast since he is so shy about showing himself in public spaces. He was a man who rose to the position of authority so suddenly about three years ago, and nothing about him was known. The name Vexley became a household name quite instantly. There were rumours that he only came out at night, but I always thought that to be a bit far-fetched. Many people said he disguised himself among us to gather intel and rise through power. People say he m
