NIRELLE

Hearing my mom take a deep breath and the silence that followed, even if it was for a few seconds, scared me more than I would like to admit. I don't know who to believe: this billionaire sitting in front of me with cautious eyes and caring for me in ways I didn't think possible, or my mom, who had put years of emotional baggage on me.

"Nirelle," she finally let out, but I could not place the emotions behind her eyes. I wanted to stand in front of her and watch her lie to my face because I was almost certain that she would.

"Where are you getting all of the bullshit from?" She asked with a laugh, as if she was ready to sweep it all under the carpet and never go there again.

"Bullshit?" I copy her tone, and she makes a sound of approval from the back of her throat.

"How can you have a brother I am not aware of?" she asked, and her tone tells me she does not want me to know. But why was she hiding this from me? What was happening? "Did I suddenly birth a mysterious child?" she ad

AUTHOR’S NOTE Oh, so you just read that and didn’t even pause to scream into the pillow? Interesting. Anyway, if I don’t see your predictions about the missing twin in the comments, I’ll write the next chapter entirely from Lucien’s business meeting point of view. You think I’m bluffing? Try me.

  • NIRELLE   SHARES OF MY HEART

NIRELLEI chew the risotto gently, the flavour bursting in my mouth. It was not as perfect as the chef's meal, but something about this made me feel different in my chest. As though it was about to explode and make a mess of the place. He insisted that we move to our bedroom. It felt weird to declare it as our room, but Lucien had wasted no time moving my things into the room, and even though I was yet to redecorate, it was ours. When we were done eating, we sat facing each other, sipping on some tea. "I think life is kind of unfair," I murmured with the teacup on my lip as I felt the hot steam touch my face."Unfair?" he asked, raising his eyebrow in confusion."You have never cooked before, and yet the meal you cooked seemed to be almost perfect." I was trying to inflate his ego as well as compliment him on the meal. "You seem to be perfect in everything.""Of course I am perfect; I am a Verlice," he said smugly with a smirk on his face. He could not even take my compliments with hu

  • NIRELLE    TOO CLOSE, NOT CLOSE ENOUGH

LUCIENHer questions woke some kind of fear I was not aware I had in me. I was so used to hiding that I was no longer sure if I could face the world and be my true self."Of course," I say, trying not to make her worry about it. She already had a lot on her plate, so adding this to it was not in question."That is a lie," she said, glancing at me. She looked like she could see my heart and tell what I was thinking. "I know you feel afraid, and it can be okay to be afraid, but you might be glad that you did it.""Oh really?" I want to act as if I don't find her words comforting, but I am sure the extra smile on my face was telling a different story."I was afraid to come here, but I am glad that I did," she said as though she was trying to motivate me."You were afraid?" I asked, and she nodded. "You challenged me on your first night here," I say, and her face grows into confusion. "You don't remember? When you said firmly that you'd never sleep with me."I did not mean to bring up int

  • NIRELLE   AN EXCUSE OR THE TRUTH?

LUCIEN"It's wonderful that you are finally going public after all this time," said one investor in the meeting. I had kept them fully in the loop of everything I had been doing, and that was what kept me relevant to them."Yes, I agree; the world needs to see and behold the face behind the great Lucien Vexley. Even I can't wait," another chimed in.When I announced my intention to them, they all seemed to welcome the idea."You pulled the words right out of my mouth," another said, beaming with joy. In meetings like this, I always liked to have my camera switched off and allowed them the liberty of whichever they would prefer to do. I knew what they all looked like, and it was really a wonder that they chose to do business with me, even though they had no clue what my face was like. Maybe business was really not about what one looked like."There must be some kind of celebration of this effect," the first man who had spoken earlier said again. The door creaked open, and Nirelle stood

  • NIRELLE    CRACK IN THE MASK

NIRELLE'Is this some kind of joke?' Zane asked before I could voice my thoughts. "You want to act as if you were worried about me? Now after eleven years?""I have been searching all over for you," Yvette said, trying to reach out to him."You know if you want to act, you need to get your story right at once so you do not jump from story to story," I say, lifting myself from the sofa and coming to stand beside Zane. "Did you already forget that you had told the entire story to me?" I ask, and she looks like prey that had been caught in a trap and was trying to escape. She let out a sigh and a laugh and then plunged aggressively to the sofa beneath her. "Did your husband arrange for you to meet him?" She asked, pointing from me to him, and then a sly smile appeared on her face. "Or did you begin to remember your past, and then you went digging?" she asked, and I was shocked. Why did I think that she was going to accept her wrong and apologise? Why did I expect anything better from her

  • NIRELLE    THE WAITING ROOM

NIRELLESeeing the gates of the Thamore mansion makes me sick to my stomach; I feel my legs and hands shaky as we approach it. I close my eyes to calm my shaky breath, but it does not work; it is almost as if I had been plunged into some kind of fear."Stop the car!" I say, startling the driver and causing him to stop abruptly in the middle of the road. We were so lucky that this wasn't the main road; if it were, then we might have caused an accident."Nirelle?" Zane turned to me with his eyebrow going up in confusion. "Are you okay?""Can I just have a moment to myself?" I ask, and he nods. I see him look at the driver from the mirror; he nods curtly, and he gets out of the car, so we are alone."If you want us to, then we can go home," he suggested, and I was about to give in. I opened my mouth to agree, but I stopped myself."No, I can't go home; if I do, then it would feel like she is winning," I say, and he looks at me as if he were trying to unravel what I was saying to him. "I

  • NIRELLE    FIVE MILLION REASONS

FIVE MILLION REASONS NIRELLE"When your mother got a job at the Thamore corporation as a cleaner, we were happy, as I had just lost my job, and we were already on the verge of taking loans. The salary she would get would be enough to feed and clothe us until I got a new job," he began.Zane had managed to calm him down just enough and convinced him that this was a time for vengeance, and his two could help us find a way to put Enoch and Yvette behind bars for a long time. No matter how we looked at the situation, they were both wrong. The number of atrocities they had managed to pile up for themselves was enough to make sure they never saw the sun again."One day, she told me that she had been promoted from the role of a cleaner to the role of the front desk at the chairman's office. The pay was better and the work hours more considerate, so she was not always stressed. I had not thought much of it because she was a woman who did excellently well in her job; I just couldn't understan
