“Dad, look!” Leo exclaimed, his voice clear but still small.

I turned, stunned, to the doctor. "What is that? I thought the gift was a piece of candy."

"It's a charcoal sketch I did of the Catskills. I have a small portfolio here. When I saw him with his coloring pencils, I thought he might appreciate the focus on structure and line," Frederick confessed with a wide, genuine grin.

His explanation finally clicked and proved how thoughtful he was. “Thank you for being so considerate, Frederick.”

Frederick smiled. “He’s a good kid, Sebastian.”

We shook hands; Frederick made some last, frivolous remark to Leo, and we were out the door, homeward bound. As I looked out of the window, the painful truth dawned - Miss Rossi had been right.

(MAYA'S POV)

I waited at the grand service door, where Xender had instructed me to meet him. It was late afternoon, and the sun cast long, dramatic shadows across the marble floors of the Zang Estate. I was here for a debriefing, and I felt the familiar tens

(MAYA'S POV)“Do you want to talk about it?” Xender questioned softly, his eyes running over my face. The sheer intensity of his gaze had warmed my cheeks all evening, overriding the professional distance I sought to maintain.“Not right now. But yes, someday, I'd like to tell you about him.” I was referring to my brother, lost to the same struggles I saw in Leo.“I have also experienced loss, and I completely understand how you must be feeling.” He said softly. A raw, profound pain crossed his features, making him look completely undone—a shocking crack in his controlled facade. It was the face of true grief. Before I could process the sudden, deep vulnerability, it was gone, replaced by the practiced look of indifference. “We learn to live with the deficit, to cope.”I nodded, knowing the truth of that statement. I wondered who he grieved. Elena, his wife, Leo’s mother? Whoever it was, Xender Zang had loved desperately. When I looked up, Xender had closed the gap between us. His fin

"I don't think I can eat this," Leo said, his focus still on the plate.“You don't have to, son,” Xender replied smoothly, having clearly anticipated this. “But you like the bread, don't you? It's simply structured.”Leo nodded after tearing apart the bread and chewing thoughtfully. Xender subtly relaxed, and we both continued eating. The meal, a rich blend of sophisticated flavors, was delicious, and I found myself cleaning my plate ten minutes later.“So,” I began, ready to launch into the actual protocol discussion. “Regarding the doctor’s findings on the mutism—”I was interrupted by a young woman in chef whites who expertly balanced three steaming plates of the main course. I watched her efficiently place the food. My stomach let out a loud, embarrassing growling sound. I flushed hard as Xender chuckled and Leo dropped into a fit of giggles. The appetizer had, as intended, simply prepared the body for the main load.As soon as the young woman departed, Xender turned those captiva

(MAYA'S POV)I could not believe that Xender had invited me to dinner. I headed home in a daze, unable to reconcile the controlling billionaire with the man who had just practically ordered me to dine with him. Why the hell was I even excited at the prospect? It was a forced meeting, a tactical debriefing, yet an excited tremor ran through me.I picked up my phone and called Lilly.“Lilly,” I said, unable to hold in that strange energy. “You won't believe what happened today.”“I just might, if it involves Xender Zang finally realizing you are the only competent person in his mansion. Spill it, Maya.”"Mr. Zang invited me to dinner. Tonight."“Mr. Zang? The one you called out for neglect? The one whose mother called you a gold-digger?” Lilly’s voice was sharp with confusion.“Yes, that one. He wants to discuss Leo’s new trauma protocols with me now that Dr. Langley has confirmed the diagnosis.”“Bullshit,” Lilly scoffed. “He wouldn't want you in his home if he wasn't dying to figure o

“Hi, Dad,” he said, coming to stand beside me.“Are you ready?”“I still don't know why we need to visit a doctor. I don't think anything is wrong with me.” He gazed up at me with those beautiful, troubled hazel eyes.“That's it, honey. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you. You're strong. But they’re specialists who can help us learn new ways to manage the panic.”“Manage the panic?” he whispered, the closest he’d come to acknowledging the trauma in months.“I think the doctor, Dr. Langley, will do a better job of explaining the techniques than I ever could. Let’s go, so he can explain.”Leo looked thoughtful for a minute and then nodded, following me out to the waiting Maybach. We rode in comfortable silence.Fifteen minutes later, Richard Hale pulled into the private driveway of Dr. Langley’s office—a discreet, high-end townhouse uptown. It felt like a confidential meeting spot, not a clinic.I got out and rounded the car to pull the door open for Leo. He stepped down, looking

My heart contracted. I had no regrets for slapping the arrogant man down but was scared of the very real financial consequences."I think I'll have to wait and see what happens," I admitted, taking another healthy sip.Lilly shook her head. "You were right to defend Leo. You were wrong to insult Zang's parenting. Give me the rest of the details, the parts you skipped.I launched into the whole confrontation and tried not to leave anything out. When I was done, Lilly looked at me-a strange smile etched on her face.“Why do I get the feeling that you're utterly obsessed with this man? It sounds like a lot more than a fight, Maya.”My cheeks warmed up despite the alcohol. I couldn't believe Lilly had picked up on the simmering tension. I had been trying to suppress the memory of his imposing frame and his eyes—those chillingly beautiful hazel eyes.“It is just professional disdain, Lilly. I hate his arrogance,” I argued.“No, you don't,” Lilly declared, pulling out her phone and quickly
