Brooklyn's POV

"What is going on between you and Jordan?"

I looked down at his hand still wrapped around my wrist. Then up at his face.

"Let go of me first."

He did. But he didn't look away.

"Answer the question," he said.

"Why do you care?"

"Brooklyn."

"No, genuinely." I kept my voice low so as not to wake Daisy still sleeping against his side. "Why does it matter to you what is or isn't going on between me and Jordan? What does that have to do with anything?"

His jaw tightened. "It has to do

Brooklyn's POV"I'll take her."I moved toward Emerson and reached for Daisy at the same moment Patrick's voice settled into the silence downstairs like a full stop.Emerson's arm tightened around his sister. His free hand came up and pushed mine away — firm, quiet, final. He stood up from the step without a word, Daisy still completely out against his chest, her head lolling softly against his shoulder. He stepped past me and walked down the hallway to her bedroom door.I followed. He pushed Daisy's door open with his foot and carried her in. I stayed in the doorway and watched him cross to her bed, lower himself onto the edge of it, and ease her down against the pillow with a slowness that had nothing rushed in it. He pulled the blanket up around her shoulders. Tucked it at the side. Checked her face once to make sure she hadn't stirred. She hadn't. She slept through all of it.He straightened up.I thought he was heading for the door. His hand shot out and grabbed my wrist — again

But he didn't look away."Answer the question," he said."Why do you care?""Brooklyn.""No, genuinely." I kept my voice low so as not to wake Daisy still sleeping against his side. "Why does it matter to you what is or isn't going on between me and Jordan? What does that have to do with anything?"His jaw tightened. "It has to do with our arrangement.""Our arrangement says nothing about Jordan." I crossed my arms. "Try again.""You're living in my house.""As your nanny. Which you reminded me of very clearly about ten minutes ago." I tilted my head. "So which is it? Am I just the nanny who needs to remember her place, or am I someone whose personal life you get to question?"He said nothing."That's what I thought." I turned to leave."I heard he hugged you."I stopped.I turned back around slowly. "Who told you that?"

Brooklyn's POV**"Jordan," I repeated slowly. "You drove past me and left me standing at the gate — because of Jordan?""Answer the question.""No." I crossed my arms. "You first. Explain what you did.""There's nothing to explain." His voice was flat. "I'm not your driver, Brooklyn. I never agreed to be. You want a ride home, call a taxi.""We have an arrangement — ""Our arrangement is about this house and about school. It does not include me waiting outside gates for you." He held my gaze without flinching. "And don't forget your place. You work here. You're the nanny. That's all this is."The words landed exactly the way he intended them to.I opened my mouth."Brooklyn?"We both turned.Daisy was standing at the top of the stairs in her socks, school bag still on her back, looking between the two of us with careful eyes. She had come in so quietly neither of us had heard her.Everything about Emerson changed in less than a second. The tension in his jaw dissolved. His arms droppe

Brooklyn's POV"I genuinely cannot believe her." Sawyer pulled another paper towel from the dispenser and handed it to me. "Who does that? Who physically holds someone's head down into a plate of food?""Sawyer — ""In front of the entire cafeteria." She leaned against the sink beside me, arms crossed, still going. "With her phone out. She had her phone out, Brooklyn. She was going to take a picture.""I know. I was there." I ran cold water over my face for the third time, watching the last of the cream sauce swirl down the drain. My hair was still damp at the front and smelled faintly of garlic."And Chloe." Sawyer shook her head slowly. "Standing behind you like that. Planning it. They planned it.""Can we just — " I straightened up and looked at myself in the mirror. Presentable. Barely, but presentable. "Can we be done talking about it? Please?""No." She handed me another paper towel. "We cannot be done talking about it because if Jordan hadn't walked in when he did, Savannah was

Brooklyn's POV"Did you see the post?" Sawyer set her tray down across from me and slid into her seat."I saw it.""And?""And nothing." I picked up my fork. "It has nothing to do with me."Sawyer looked at me with the expression she used when she thought I was lying to myself but had decided not to push it. She opened her water bottle instead and we ate in the comfortable quiet we had built between us over the last few weeks. The cafeteria was loud around us. The usual lunchtime noise — trays scraping, chairs dragging, a hundred conversations happening at once. I was halfway through my sandwich when a tray landed on the table directly in front of me.I looked up.Savannah Hayes stood on the other side of the table with her hand still on the tray, red nails perfectly shaped, expression bright and easy the way it always was before she did something that wasn't either of those things."Eat that," she said.I looked at the tray. Creamy pasta, heavily sauced, completely untouched. Then I

Brooklyn's POVNeither of us spoke. He was looking at me and I was looking at him and the hallway was so quiet I could hear the house breathing around us. He took one step closer — just one, slow and deliberate — and my back was already against my door with nowhere further to go.His eyes dropped briefly to my mouth. Then footsteps.Heavy, unhurried, coming from the far end of the corridor.Patrick.My hand flew out and I shoved Emerson sideways by the arm — not hard but fast — and spun back through my door, pulling it shut behind me in one motion. I pressed my back against it on the inside and stayed completely still, eyes on the ceiling, not breathing.Outside I heard Patrick's footsteps slow and stop."Emerson." His father's voice was tired but warm, the way it got late at night when the businessman version of him had finally clocked off. "You're back. How did it go? What did the doctor say?"A pause."Fine." Emerson's voice came through the door, slightly muffled. "They checked me

Brooklyn's pov "Here is the deal." Emerson leaned against the hallway wall, arms crossed, voice low enough that Daisy couldn't hear from the dining room. He looked completely relaxed, like he negotiated truces every morning before breakfast. "I stay out of your way," he said, "so you're free to

Brooklyn's pov "Time to feast."I heard Emerson say — cleats still on, grass-stained from soccer practice, heading straight for the kitchen like the fridge owed him something.I stayed on the couch and waited. The silence that followed was deeply satisfying."What the — " A pause. Then louder. "Why

Brooklyn's pov "I'm really sorry, Mr. Weston. I can't work for you."The words came out before I could stop them. Brooklyn's pov "Move!"Emerson shoved past me before I could even process what was happening. He threw himself over Daisy and me, arms spread wide, taking the full weight of the branch across his back. The crack was loud. Then silence.I scrambled to my feet, heart hammering. "Emerson — ""I'm fin
