The gala took over the top floor of a hotel Marielle would once have scrubbed bathtubs in for a living. She stood at the edge of the ballroom in a dress that cost more than three months of her old rent, feeling like an extra who'd wandered onto the wrong film set.

"You look like you're about to run for the exit," Grayson murmured, appearing at her elbow with two glasses of champagne. "Don't. Everyone's watching the new Mrs. Cole, and bolting reads badly on camera."

"There are cameras?"

"There are always cameras." He passed her a glass, his sleeve brushing her bare arm, and the small contact did more to settle her nerves than the champagne. "Smile like you like me. Apparently I'm charming."

"According to who? Your accountant?"

His mouth almost gave in to a real smile, and she was still riding that small win when a voice cut through the noise behind them.

"Grayson. You didn't tell me you'd gotten married."

Marielle turned to find a tall woman in a dress the color of dried wine, hair pulled back tight enough to look painful, eyes running over Marielle the way you'd size up a competing bid at auction.

"Diane." His voice went flat, controlled, the exact register he'd used explaining the Whitfields' petition. "My wife. Marielle."

"Charmed." Diane's smile didn't make it anywhere near her eyes. "Forgive my surprise. Grayson's always been so particular about who he lets close. And you're, what, hotel staff? I heard the strangest rumor."

"Housekeeping," Marielle said, before Grayson could speak for her. "I was good at it."

A flicker of surprise crossed Diane's face, someone recalibrating an easier target that hadn't shown up. "How refreshing," she said. "Most women in your position hide that part."

"I'm not most women."

"No." Diane's eyes narrowed, slow. "I'm starting to see that." She turned back to Grayson, voice dropping into something meant to sound private and pitched exactly loud enough for Marielle to catch every word. "Does she know about your father's old maritime cases? The ones your lawyers worked so hard to bury? I'd hate for her to be blindsided, married into this family so fast."

His jaw locked, hard enough that Marielle felt the tension through the arm pressed against hers. "Ancient history, Diane. Not your business."

"Everything about Cole Maritime is my business, darling. I nearly married into it, remember." She turned back to Marielle, unhurried, the smile of someone who'd just planted something and had all the patience in the world to watch it grow. "Ask him about Duvall Shipping sometime. Small company, went under years back. Terrible accident. I only remember the name because it came up so often during the settlement talks."

The room tilted a few degrees.

"That's," Marielle started, and stopped, because Duvall wasn't some stranger's old business dispute. It was her father's name. Her father, who'd spent his whole life on shipping contracts, who'd died nine years ago under circumstances her mother had never once explained fully, who'd left them drowning in debt instead of the payout everyone had promised.

"Something wrong?" Diane asked, far too pleasant, watching Marielle's face like she'd just gotten confirmation of a private theory.

"No idea what you mean," Marielle managed.

Grayson had gone quiet beside her. Not the flat, controlled quiet from earlier. Something else. When she looked up at him, whatever composure he'd been wearing all night had come apart right down the seam.

"Duvall," he said, low, like he was testing an old name against a memory he hadn't touched in years. "Your father was Étienne Duvall."

Not a question.

And the way it landed told her this wasn't news to him at all.

Marielle waited until Theo was asleep before opening the first letter. She had tried reading it earlier, but Theo had returned to the study looking for her, and one glance at his face had been enough to make her close the folder. He had already spent too many evenings watching adults disappear behind doors with worried expressions. Tonight, she sat beside him through his shower, listened while he read several pages of his shark book aloud and stayed until his breathing became steady. Hearing his voice, even quiet and uncertain, felt like something worth protecting. Only after she returned downstairs did she allow herself to think about the package waiting on Grayson's desk. The oldest correspondence was dated more than fifteen years earlier. Most of it was ordinary company material at first, the kind of language Marielle had learned to read carefully during the investigation because the important details often hid among routine approvals. Alfred's name appeared on payment reviews, acc

By four that afternoon, Grayson had stopped calling Julian himself. His brother's phone had gone straight to voicemail for more than an hour, the company car assigned to him was still in the Cole Maritime garage, and nobody had seen the private vehicle he normally kept at his apartment since early that morning. Grayson could have involved the police, but there was no crime in an adult packing a suitcase and leaving home, and reporting Julian missing would create questions they were not ready to answer. Instead, the investigator checked airports, private terminals and the properties Julian was known to use while Grayson sat in his study with his phone beside him, waiting for information that never seemed to arrive quickly enough.Marielle collected Theo from school because Grayson could not risk leaving the house. Theo spoke twice during the drive home, once to tell her he had finished the book about sharks and again to ask whether Dad would be home for dinner. The improvement should h

Marielle waited until Grayson left the study before she spoke to Julian again. He had gone upstairs to check on Theo, although she suspected he also needed five minutes in a room where his brother was not sitting across from him, explaining why years of lies had supposedly been necessary. Julian remained in the same chair after Grayson left, his elbows resting on his knees while he stared at the documents scattered across the desk. He looked exhausted rather than frightened, and Marielle found that harder to tolerate. He had known this night could come. Somewhere between discovering what their father had done and removing evidence from the archive, Julian must have imagined what would happen if Grayson ever learned the truth.Marielle closed the study door and returned to the desk. She did not raise her voice because anger had gone past the point where shouting would help. She thought about every time Julian had stood near her while Alfred's name came up, every meeting where

Grayson knew which document Julian meant before he saw it. The memory came back in pieces, not because the transaction itself had mattered to him at the time, but because he remembered the year. His father had still been running Cole Maritime as though every office, ship and employee belonged to him personally, while Grayson had recently been given authority over part of the company's operations. Most days ended with stacks of paperwork on his desk, much of it prepared by departments he had been taught to trust. He had signed contracts, approvals, insurance documents, financing notices and internal authorisations until his own name had become something he stopped noticing.Julian had a copy stored outside the company's current system. He did not explain where he had kept it. He opened an encrypted folder on his phone, found a scanned document and sent it to Grayson's computer. The file appeared seconds later. Marielle moved closer as Grayson opened it, and she knew the

Grayson did not respond immediately. He remained behind the desk with the security footage frozen on the laptop, while Julian sat opposite him and Marielle stayed near the sofa. A few minutes earlier, Grayson had wanted an explanation for missing records and leaked documents. Now his father's name had entered the room, and Marielle could see how much that changed things. Grayson had spent years separating himself from the man who raised him, but there were some wounds distance did not fix. Julian knew that better than anyone, which made Marielle wonder whether he had saved this part for last because it was the truth or because he knew it was the one thing capable of making Grayson listen. Julian began with the transactions connected to Alfred Cassian. They had not started with Alfred, he explained, and they had never truly belonged to him. Years earlier, Cole Maritime had been expanding faster than its finances could safely support. Several large contracts depended on the company ma

Julian arrived twenty-eight minutes after Grayson called him, and Marielle knew because Grayson had checked the time often enough for both of them. He had not called security, his lawyer or anyone from the board. The investigator had offered to stay, but Grayson sent him home after asking for copies of every file and the original footage. By the time Julian's car appeared beyond the front windows, the house had gone quiet. Theo was upstairs, and Marielle had promised to check on him before bed. She had offered to leave Grayson alone with his brother as well, but he had asked her to stay. That frightened her more than the anger she had expected from him.Julian walked into the study without knocking, dressed in the same clothes he had worn to the office earlier that day. His gaze went first to Grayson, then Marielle, before settling on the laptop positioned in the middle of the desk. He must have understood immediately that this was not another discussion about the audit. Stil
