Before Dorry could turn around and say anything that might add to the pain I was already feeling, I quickly turned my back and walked straight out of the house.

I was sure she would laugh at me. A loud, mocking laugh was all I would hear. After all, I had swallowed every word I once said. I lost in a game I thought I’d win.

I stopped walking as soon as I reached outside.

I felt worse than beaten. Pain radiated through my entire body, down to my very soles. Every step was a struggle, every breath even harder. I felt utterly drained—not just my body but my mind and heart, too.

After a moment, I turned to look at the closed door. I knew what I did earlier was an act of cowardice. I admitted that I still loved her but couldn’t bear to hear what she had to say. I couldn’t handle her laughter, her words, or the sight of her happiness while I was breaking apart inside.

I had been so arrogant on the day of our wedding.

I thought I could make her life miserable and turn her days into torment.

"Nelson, what are you doing?" Dorry demanded angrily, trying to push me away, but I held her tightly. I pulled her even closer, burying my face into the crook of her neck."What the—let go of me!""Shhh..." I hushed her again, pressing my index finger to her lips. She immediately grabbed my hand, threw it aside forcefully, and glared at me."You’re insane!""Don't be so loud... Ouch..." I groaned, reluctantly letting her go. My stomach throbbed from the sharp elbow she’d jabbed into me. She didn’t even give me a chance to finish what I was saying.I had been finding ways to keep her in my arms, even just for a while, even just for tonight. But no, Dorry wasn’t one to make things easy for me.“You really thought you’d get away with that, didn’t you?” she said, now fully facing me and jabbing her finger at me as she put some distance between us.I scratched my head, flashing her a sheepish grin. She wasn’t wrong—I had thought I could get away with sneaking in a little closeness. I thoug

"You’re an animal, Hector!" I spat, landing a punch square on his jaw, sending him sprawling to the ground. He never saw it coming, leaving him stunned and unable to fight back."Are you okay, Dorry?" I asked, turning to the love of my life."N-Nelson..." she stammered, instead of answering, barely managing to utter my name. I wrapped my arm around her waist protectively."What are you doing here?" she asked.I responded with a wink and a charming smile that left her unable to look away from my handsome face."I’ll answer your question later. Step aside for now. I need to teach that scum a lesson," I said, pointing at Hector, who was clutching his bleeding lip."Nelson, stop it. That’s enough. There are too many people here; I don’t want this to escalate. Let’s just leave, please."She grabbed my hand and pulled me away from Hector. I glanced back at my worthless cousin, who still hadn’t managed to stand up. I must’ve hit him harder than I thought."Leave it to me, sir," Jac said with

It was as if Uncle Hernan choked on his own spit. He swallowed repeatedly, his Adam’s apple bobbing with each attempt, and even cleared his throat awkwardly. Then, loosening his tie, he tried to regain his composure. But the sight only drew a sly smile from me. Serves him right. Meddling in things that don’t concern him—this is the result. His ego took a direct hit, and I relished every second of it.“That’s what happens when you interfere in matters you’re not involved in,” I added, my tone light yet biting. The words hit their mark, making him clench his fists in frustration.“Everyone, enjoy the party.” Aunt Norma’s voice cut through the tension, an attempt to redirect attention. But thanks to this attention-seeker, Uncle Hernan, I’d completely missed her rushed speech. Not that I was particularly eager to hear it."Hernan.” Aunt Norma’s smile was tight, her sharp gaze a dagger aimed at her husband. He got the message instantly, calming down and forcing a strained smile. This famil

"Sir Nelson, good luck. Make sure you steal the spotlight at the party tonight. Outshine your entitled Aunt Norma."Jac's words reached my ears, but I couldn’t muster a response. My mind was still clouded by his earlier revelation: I was the sole heir to my late grandfather's estate. Now, here we were, standing outside the De Vedra mansion—the same mansion where I once lived with my parents. Its grandeur was overwhelming, with the tall wrought-iron gates, the sprawling gardens meticulously trimmed, and the mansion itself illuminated like a palace. It was ironic how something so beautiful could hold such bitter memories.Never in my life did I imagine setting foot here again, in a house where I was never welcome, among people so heartless they threw me out just days after my parents’ funeral. My grandfather, the patriarch of the De Vedra family, hadn’t been able to stop it. His youngest child, Aunt Norma, had been eager to erase my existence from their lives. They claimed there was no

Nelson"What the hell, Nelson?!"After a few moments of stunned silence from Dorry because of my sudden kiss and the way my tongue had invaded her mouth, she finally found her voice and shoved me with all her strength. Now, she was glaring at me with blazing eyes, furiously wiping her lips over and over again. The way she wiped her mouth was like something filthy had stuck to her, or as if she were terrified of catching some disease.I let out a bitter laugh as I watched her. It was already insulting enough that she didn’t come home last night. It was insulting enough that she spent the entire night with another man. And her reaction just added to my insult—a new level of insult. She was making it painfully clear how much she despised me. Like I was some kind of filthy object she didn’t want touching her skin.“Disgusted, Dorry?” I asked, a grin on my face, though inside I was a raging storm, ready to explode. She should be grateful I didn’t confront her earlier. Lucky for her, I don’

"Why are you just getting home now?" Nelson's question caught me off guard.I had been feeling drained earlier, but now my adrenaline was spiking, all thanks to this monkey greeting me at the door. It’s seven in the morning, and I didn’t expect him to be here still. He usually leaves early, whether it’s a weekday or weekend—he never misses a beat. Why hasn’t he left today? Was he waiting for me?Maybe he really was waiting for me. After all, he’s the one who opened the door. There's not even a hint of shame on his face after the disgusting thing he said yesterday. But then again, he’s shameless and thick-skinned, so he probably buried that perverted comment deep in his memory by now."Didn’t you tell me to come home early? Now you’re questioning me?" I quipped, smirking with that annoying grin of his.My eyes narrowed. "Can you just get out of my face? You’re an eyesore!" I snapped irritably, though my gaze betrayed me as it secretly roamed over his sweaty body. Clearly, he was flaunt

I smiled bitterly. Yes, Hector is my cousin.A cousin who mercilessly beat up my best friend.I clenched my fist as my gaze froze once again on Hector, who was smiling. That monster! They took a life, and now he's the one smiling and happy. He has no right to be happy. He has no right to laugh or enjoy the life he has now—he has no right.I knew I was their target that night. They wanted me gone from this world, but unfortunately, my best friend was ambushed instead because they thought it was me driving the car.I blamed myself for what happened to my friend. I couldn't accept that I lost my best friend—and my cousin was the reason why. If only I hadn’t let him leave that night. If I hadn’t lent him my car, he’d still be alive. He’d still be with me today.Regret gnawed at me, but there’s nothing I can do. My best friend is gone. What’s even more painful is that I haven’t given him justice. The people who killed him are still free.We didn’t have solid evidence that Hector's group wa

Nelson"Ex-boyfriend?"I muttered, my gaze following Dorry as she hurried away, her strides impossibly large.I could only run a hand through my hair and let out a bitter laugh. "Hector, her ex-boyfriend?" "What a life!" I exclaimed. She's worse than flirtatious—she’s a foolish flirt who insists on pushing herself onto the man who hurt her before."Sir Nelson!""What?!" I snapped at Jac, whose startled face reflected my abrupt outburst."Sir Nelson, why are you upset?" Jac asked, his eyes wide. He glanced at Dorry, who was now walking down the hallway."I'm sorry. My temper's flaring," I quickly apologized, my pace slowing as I walked away.Jac silently fell into step beside me, though I noticed him stealing glances my way repeatedly."How's the task I gave you?" I asked, but my eyes instinctively wandered to Dorry and Hector's table, where they were now eating."Everything’s been handled, Sir Nelson," Jac replied, though his gaze also drifted to their table.I couldn’t help but glan
