Chapter 3

Author: Summer Forest
A red handprint appeared across Serena's pale cheek.

She barely reacted.

Jason lost his mind.

"Adrian!"

He snatched a cup of coffee from a nearby table and hurled it at me.

I threw up an arm to shield my face.

The scalding liquid drenched my forearm.

Pain exploded across my skin.

I went white.

Jason was shaking with rage.

"You can hit me if you want!

"But how dare you hit my fiancée?

"Who do you think you are?"

Employees rushed forward.

"Oh my God. Look what he pushed Jason into doing."

"He deserved it. He's the one who hit Serena."

"If I were her, I would've called the police already."

My whole body trembled from the burn.

I stared at Jason.

"That was assault.

"I'm calling the police."

For a fraction of a second, his expression changed.

Then Serena took hold of my hand.

She looked at the burn and frowned.

"Enough.

"Come to my office. We'll treat your arm."

I ripped my hand away.

"Don't touch me."

Her face hardened.

"Adrian, do you really have to make this worse?"

I laughed in disbelief.

"I'm making this worse?

"I'm the one who got punched.

"I'm the one who had boiling coffee thrown on me.

"Or is this just like five years ago, Serena?

"Facts don't matter as long as Jason is involved?"

Her breathing caught.

After a pause, she lowered her voice.

"If you call the police now, the only thing you'll accomplish is humiliating yourself.

"Treat the burn first. Don't let it scar."

I ignored her and called anyway.

The police arrived about twenty minutes later.

The officer in charge walked in, saw Serena, and immediately put on a fawning smile.

"Ms. Hart. Didn't expect to see you here."

He sounded more like a guest than an investigator. His name tape read Kessler.

My stomach sank.

Paige stepped forward.

"I'm sorry, but our security cameras stopped working last month. We haven't had them repaired yet."

Employees began speaking over one another.

"He hit Serena first."

"And he's been harassing her."

"He came here looking for trouble."

Every voice supported Jason.

Not one supported me.

Five years had passed.

Nothing had changed.

Powerful people still had others willing to bend the truth for them.

Kessler frowned at me.

"Sir, you'll need to come with us."

I stared at him.

"I'm the injured one.

"You're taking me instead of him?"

His patience disappeared.

"Cooperate, or we'll restrain you."

Serena leaned close enough that only I could hear.

"Adrian, you've always been arrogant and overbearing.

"Maybe it's time you learned a lesson."

I looked at her cold face.

For a second, I remembered back in college and asking why she wanted to study law.

"To stand up for justice," she'd said.

"To uphold justice and restore fairness to the world."

Back then, I'd thought she was glowing.

Now she had trampled the law again and again for Jason.

And trampled me along with it.

The Serena Hart I once loved felt like a dream from adolescence.

A dream I'd finally woken from, leaving nothing behind.

I was taken into custody.

My phone was confiscated.

"Can you contact my wife?"

The officer behind the desk didn't look up.

"Not right now. Maybe tomorrow."

I was pushed into a holding cell.

Several men were already inside.

The moment I entered, they exchanged looks.

One bald man grinned.

"So this is the guy who tried to steal someone else's fiancée?"

He picked up a bucket of cold water and dumped it across my bunk.

"You can sleep there."

The others laughed.

"Thought you were tough."

"Not so tough when the bed's wet, huh?"

"Should've thought of that before hitting another man's fiancée."

I understood.

This wasn't random.

Jason had arranged it.

No one let me sleep that night.

Whenever I closed my eyes, someone kicked the bunk.

Trash was thrown at me.

Near dawn, someone poured water over my face.

I curled on the freezing mattress.

The cuts on my face throbbed.

My burned arm felt like fire.

And my mind grew clearer with every passing hour.

Five years ago, they killed my mother.

Destroyed my father.

And now they still weren't finished.

The next morning, I was finally released.

I felt hollowed out.

A staff member handed back my phone.

"Ms. Hart was kind enough not to press charges.

"You can leave.

"Try not to cause trouble again."

I said nothing.

I turned the phone on.

Hundreds of notifications flooded the screen.

Yesterday's scene had gone viral.

The video had clearly been edited.

Only my slap remained.

Along with footage of Jason crying.

The comments were vicious.

"What's wrong with this guy?"

"Apparently he used to be obsessed with her."

"Poor Jason."

"Why doesn't this homewrecker disappear?"

Then I saw that people had dug up my personal information.

Someone had even found the address of the old neighborhood where my grandmother lived.

My breathing stopped.

A video appeared on my feed.

My grandmother, almost eighty, stood outside the local market surrounded by reporters.

Microphones and cameras were shoved toward her face.

"Is your grandson involved with an engaged woman?"

"Does he have mental problems?"

"Is it true he used to chase other people's girlfriends in college?"

She stood there lost and frightened.

Still clutching the corn and ribs she had just bought.

Before leaving home the previous morning, I'd called her.

I told her I would visit after my appointment.

And that I wanted her corn-and-rib soup.

Our wedding was magnificent.Evelyn seemed determined to laid the very best Ashford had to offer at my feet.Roses ran the length of the aisle. The crystal lights overhead were as bright as a sky full of stars.I stood there in a white suit and watched her come toward me, one step at a time, in a gown that didn't seem real. And I thought about many years ago.About the man who'd left this city alone, who had struggled simply to survive.Back then I thought the entire world had thrown me away.It never once occurred to me that someday somebody would love me like this. When it came time for the vows, even Evelyn, who was rarely nervous, seemed tense. She held on to my hands and started quietly."At the beginning, all I wanted was a suitable husband."The guests laughed."Handsome."Smart."Someone who knew where the lines were."And ideally someone my father would like."I laughed too.Evelyn didn't look away from me once. Her gaze was overflowing with tenderness."La

That was the moment Evelyn finally lost her temper. She rose and slapped Serena hard across the face.Serena hadn't seen it coming. She staggered back, and blood appeared at the corner of her mouth.Evelyn wasn't finished. She stepped in and took hold of her collar."Is there any end to this with you?"Whether he says yes to me or not, he is my husband."You're the one who hurt him."What makes you think you have the right to stand here at all?"Serena's face was swelling already, and she was still looking at me.I caught Evelyn's arm."Enough."Evelyn turned her head, the anger still in her eyes."Adrian, she..."I shook my head slightly."Don't let someone irrelevant ruin our romantic moment."The last of the color left Serena's face.I had already reached over and taken the ring out of Evelyn's palm, and I slid it onto her ring finger myself.I looked down at the diamond glittering brilliantly, pressed a kiss to the back of her hand, and smiled."Silly girl."The

I looked into Serena's eyes for several seconds before I understood that she meant it.I immediately shot back."Serena, you want to be my mistress and I'm telling you I wouldn't want you. In what way could you ever compare to my wife?"Even after that, she wouldn't let go."What is it you like about her? I can learn it."That stopped me.The Serena I used to know was proud.Cold.Above all of this. And now she was saying things like that.Too late.I looked at her and said it plainly."Everything about her is good, because she's Evelyn Pierce."You will never come close to her."The last of the light went out of Serena's eyes.I had no patience left at all."Get out. If you're not gone I'm calling someone."Instead she locked her arms around my waist, with a strength that startled me."Adrian..."Her voice shook."You weren't like this before."You used to love me. You know you did."For a moment, my head swam. She was right. The Adrian Cole of those years real

Serena glanced at me before she could stop herself. There was something close to panic in her face. Then she crossed the floor quickly and started explaining."Adrian, don't misunderstand."This is my cousin, Toby."He's getting married soon. I only came along to help him pick out a suit."I stared at her for a second.I had no idea why she thought she owed me that. Then I couldn't help laughing."Serena, how many cousins you have is nothing to do with me."Her face went a shade paler.I'd already lost interest in looking at her."Would you leave? I need to start trying these on."Bethany looked uncomfortable."Ms. Hart, perhaps you could..."Serena might as well not have heard her.Her eyes had gone to the suits hanging beside me.Her face grew paler by the second. When she got to the black tailcoat, tears came into her eyes.I looked at it and remembered too.The suit we'd picked out when we were getting married had looked very much like that one.I pointed at it

"What are you looking at?"Evelyn's voice came from behind me, clear and bright.I came back to myself and pulled the curtains shut."Nothing."Just someone who doesn't matter."The small red glow outside vanished behind the heavy fabric. It felt like shutting it out of my life for good.Evelyn put her arms around me from behind and pressed her cheek against my back."She really doesn't matter?"I turned, took her face in my hands, and kissed her hard."She doesn't."You're the one who matters to me."The moment I said it, something in me let go completely. It was like finally saying goodbye to all of it.Evelyn's eyes lit up at once. The next second she'd pushed me back onto the bed."You're dangerously good at this tonight, Adrian. Let me return the favor."I had a vague sense of where this was going."Evelyn, don't you dare..."She didn't let me finish.By the time we stopped, the sky outside was going light.Evelyn was still wide awake. She held on to me, play

Serena stared at our joined hands. The color left her face by degrees."That isn't possible."Evelyn laughed softly. She wrapped both arms around mine, and there was nothing subtle about it."Ms. Hart, what exactly is it going to take before you believe we're actually married?"She raised her eyes lazily, and her tone turned genuinely nasty."Should my husband and I prove it in front of you?"I went scarlet and smacked her arm."Evelyn! What is the matter with you?"She looked up at me, delighted by how flustered I was, and laughed harder. Then she stretched up and kissed my cheek."Why are you embarrassed?"Married people do that."My face got hotter.Serena's expression darkened to an extreme. She stared fixedly at Evelyn's arm linked through mine. Veins stood out on her forehead.Evelyn had clearly run out of patience. She looked at Serena and spoke coldly."Ms. Hart, see yourself out."My husband and I have things to do."She put a good deal of weight on the la
