Chapter 3

작가: Goya
In less than five minutes, a dozen burly men in black filed in.

They didn't waste a single word. They went straight upstairs and started clearing things out.

The gentle look on Maury's face finally cracked.

He shot to his feet and barked, "I'd like to see who dares!"

The bodyguards didn't even spare him a glance. They swept Dante's watch boxes, Carlo's laptop bag, and Isabella's freshly unboxed clothes into trash bags with practiced efficiency.

Maury stepped forward to stop them and was casually pushed aside by the lead bodyguard with one hand, nearly hitting the floor.

Dante's face went livid. He jabbed a finger at me.

"Mom, what are you doing? For a few of Lucia's princess tantrums, you're throwing your sons out on the street?"

"Right now, I don't consider you my sons."

I took the disinfecting wipe the butler handed me and cleaned my fingers, slow and unhurried.

"Calling you my sons was a favor. Since you don't want the favor, then get lost and crawl back to where you belong."

Isabella watched the luggage get tossed out the front door like garbage and shrieked.

"What are you doing! That's my brand-new face cream!"

She lunged to grab it. A bodyguard kicked the bag on the floor, and she went sprawling.

Rocco dropped the playful smirk.

He stared me down, teeth clenched.

"Fine. You're ruthless. But I think it's about time."

I watched him with amusement, waiting to see what he'd say.

"Without us, how long do you think your precious Rizzo family will stay on top?"

Carlo let out a cold laugh too.

"Mom, you've probably been living too comfortably at home. You've forgotten who's actually holding up the Rizzo family now."

"If you're not relying on us, then what, you're gonna rely on your daughter who can't do anything? Let me remind you—kick us out now, and when we really take over the Rizzo family, you and your daughter won't get a single scrap."

So that was it. All along, they'd been bullying Lucia on the surface, but the real goal was to challenge my authority.

In their minds, the Rizzo family already belonged to them.

The four adopted sons stood on the lawn outside the villa with Isabella, looking bedraggled.

When they left, their backs were ramrod straight.

As if they weren't dogs kicked to the curb, but victors walking away on their own terms.

I watched them go, then turned to the butler.

"Look into what those four have been doing behind my back."

---

Back home, I found Lucia sorting through documents.

"Lucia." I looked at her. "In ten days, you turn twenty. Do you know what that means?"

Lucia didn't flinch. She met my eyes. "It means I take over the Donna's seat."

"And are you ready?"

"I am, Mother."

I placed my hands on her shoulders. "You are my daughter. You are the heir I chose. You were born to fill this position, and you were born to belong in it."

"Trust your instincts. Trust your mind. Once you turn your dependence on others into focus on yourself, you'll realize you already have the strength."

The last trace of doubt in Lucia's eyes hardened into steel. "Yes, Mother."

I looked out at the sky.

Those four have their schemes. They'll make their move at the succession council.

Whatever they want to do, let them show it. Then I can settle accounts with them once and for all.

"Ten days from now, in the Rizzo family hall, I'll invite New York's finest."

"We'll hold your succession ceremony."

Five years later. The annual social gala for America's elite and powerful was held in grand style at a luxury hotel in New York. The Rizzo family group, as host, covered all reception and sponsorship.Lucia, as the head of the Rizzo family group, walked the red carpet in a dark red evening gown, surrounded by spotlights. Her presence was so powerful people didn't dare look her in the eye.Ricardo and Rowan flanked her, one on each side, like two grim reapers standing guard.Cameras flashed wildly. Lucia smiled and nodded to the media, utterly composed.I sat in the VIP lounge of the venue, watching the broadcast on screen, taking a light sip of champagne. My daughter no longer needed me to worry about a thing. She held this empire even more securely than I did back in my day."Ma'am."The butler walked in and handed me a tablet."This is the routine report from the private prison."I glanced at it casually.Over these five years, the four of them had lived quite the "colorful" existenc

"No! You can't do this!"Dante scrambled frantically for the papers on the ground, tearing at them wildly."These were normal business expenses! You're framing us on purpose! The family can't do this to us!""Whether it's a frame job or not isn't up to you to argue."I turned away, done looking at this pack of begging strays."Ricardo.""Ma'am." Ricardo inclined his head slightly."Make the arrangements." My voice was light, but every word cut to the bone. "Since they owe the family a debt this big, someone should take good care of them from now on."I deliberately put weight on the words "take good care."A bloodthirsty smile flickered in Ricardo's eyes."Rest assured, ma'am. I guarantee every day of their lives, they'll beg for death and never find it."Hearing that, Carlo completely broke. He knew the Rizzo family's methods all too well. No prison sentences. Only endless torment. Once the family reckoning came down on you, what waited was a lightless cage, ceaseless grinding, a livi

That humiliation at the dock was the final straw that crushed the last shred of dignity the four of them had left. They finally understood. In front of the Rizzo family, they were no longer noble masters. They were stray dogs, lower than ants. The autumn rain wouldn't let up.Days of dropping temperatures left New York bone-chillingly cold.Outside the Rizzo family estate, the iron gates stayed shut.Maury, Dante, Carlo, and Rocco had been kneeling in the rain for three straight hours.Soaked to the bone, their worn clothes clinging to their bodies, lips purple from the cold, shaking all over.In Maury's hand, he clutched a faded pink jewelry box.It was the first bracelet he'd ever bought Lucia, ten years ago, with half a year of saved allowance. The butler stood inside the iron gates holding an umbrella, watching them with a blank face."Please go back, sirs. The ma'am and the young lady don't wish to see you.""Mr. Stalyn, please, just put in a word for us."Dante kowtowed hard, mud

The reckoning came faster and far more thoroughly than Maury and the others had imagined. In less than forty-eight hours, the four of them learned what it meant to fall from the clouds into the mud.Every bank card under their names was frozen. The Rizzo family used its influence to come after them, charging the four with betraying the family and embezzling funds. To pay off their massive debts, they had to sell everything of value they owned. The custom suits. The Patek Philippe watches. Even the limited-edition cufflinks. The four once-proud young masters of the Rizzo family were now crammed into a run-down boarding apartment in the city's slums, less than forty square meters.Peeling wallpaper. Yellow water stains seeping through the ceiling. That afternoon, Lucia was in my study, learning how to read complex financial reports under Ricardo's guidance.Lucia's growth was astonishing. After that betrayal, the soft shell around her had been completely shattered, replaced by a quiet, r

Ricardo raised his head. That cold, stern face that struck fear into the entire business world was now filled with fervent reverence."You've been in seclusion for ten years. We have been waiting every single day for a word from you."Ricardo stood and took off his suit jacket, respectfully laying it on the seat beside me."Ma'am, say the word—do we move, or do we clear the room? Whoever's here today, not one of them walks out."Maury finally snapped out of it.He pushed up the glasses that had slid down his nose, his voice shaking from sheer shock."Mom... w-what is going on? How do you even know Ricardo and the others?"Maury thought the Rizzo family's ten years of stability were all thanks to the four of them fighting out there."And what reckoning... Mom! Even if we were wrong, you don't need to bring outsiders to deal with us, do you?""The West Side project is still in our hands. If you really use these people to force us, the Rizzo family's cash flow will break!""Outsiders?"Ro

Three hours before the succession ceremony.I got a call.On the other end, Maury's voice was vicious. "Mother, you shouldn't have done this. Lucia doesn't have what it takes to inherit the Donna's seat.""We didn't want to do this either, but it's the only way to make you take back your decision."Lucia's struggling, desperate cries came through the phone. My pupils contracted hard."Mom, come to the backstage of the hall. Let's have a proper talk."The car ran three red lights on the way.Mid-route, the butler called."Ma'am, the Isabella you asked me to look into—her full name is Isabella Conti."Conti. That surname hadn't surfaced in a long time.Because in the three years after Enzo Conti shot my husband dead, I had wiped out their entire family.I thought I'd cleaned house thoroughly enough. Now it seemed there were still fish that slipped through the net, gasping in the dark."Your four adopted sons didn't just ally with Conti. They've also joined forces with many of the familie
