Chapter 4

작가: Triple Threat
Elias fired two questions at me in a row.

I raised my hand, ready to answer.

Then his phone rang.

Tracy's bright, cheerful voice came through the speaker.

"Mr. Jones, did you buy the cake I wanted?

"It's matcha, right? My favorite?

"I'm almost at the office. If I don't see that cake, I'm going to be mad at you!"

The seriousness on Elias's face disappeared in an instant, replaced by a gentle smile.

"Don't worry," he said into the phone, "I didn't forget."

He picked up the cake from the table, looked at me, and said, "We'll talk tonight."

Before I could say a word, he hurried out the door. The whole thing took less than ten seconds.

If he had been willing to spare just ten seconds for me, I would have told him.

I was leaving. My flight was tonight.

A bitter smile crossed my face. I gathered my loose hair into a messy bun and went back to packing.

Halfway through, Elias sent me a message.

Elias: [Wait for me at home tonight. Let's talk properly.]

I replied.

Melissa: [Around what time?]

Elias: [Around eight. I'll take Tracy home first.]

I stared at the screen for a long moment before typing.

Melissa: [Okay.]

My flight left at ten that night.

I set my phone aside and kept packing.

At seven o'clock that evening, I ordered myself a birthday cake.

From the ages of seven to twenty-seven, Elias had celebrated every birthday with me.

This year...

I did not want to leave with any regrets.

At 7:10 PM, I zipped my last suitcase shut. Then, I plugged in my phone to charge.

Elias texted to say he had gotten off work and was walking through the parking garage.

A moment later, Tracy updated her social media.

She posted a picture of herself sitting in the passenger seat while her boss drove.

Only one of the man's hands was visible, resting on the steering wheel. The diamond engagement ring on his ring finger caught the light.

Her caption read: [My personal chauffeur.]

I stared at the photo for a long time, then I tapped the ‘Like’ button.

At 7:40 PM, my phone reached full charge.

Elias still was not home.

I checked the delivery tracker. The map showed my cake was almost here.

I sent him a message.

Melissa: [Are you almost home?]

He replied almost immediately.

Elias: [Tracy twisted her ankle getting out of the car. I'm walking her upstairs.]

Elias: [Wait for me. I'll be home soon.]

I replied simply.

Melissa: [Okay.]

I put my phone down.

At 7:50 PM, my airline sent a boarding reminder. I glanced at the time and texted him again.

Melissa: [Where are you now?]

Elias: [Just left her apartment complex. Give me ten more minutes. I'll be home by eight.]

Melissa: [Hmm, okay.]

At exactly 8:00 PM, I deleted the last photograph of Elias and me from my phone.

The doorbell finally rang.

I walked over and opened the door. A delivery driver stood there holding my cake, wearing a warm smile.

"Happy birthday," he said.

By 8:10 PM, the frosting had already started to soften.

I could not wait any longer.

Curled up on the couch, I played the video of Elias's proposal on repeat while taking bite after bite of my birthday cake.

For some reason, the cake tasted saltier with every bite.

I knew why. My tears would not stop falling.

I thought I would remember this birthday for the rest of my life.

At nine o'clock, I checked in at the airport.

Elias's message finally arrived.

Elias: [I'm sorry, Melissa. I was halfway home when I suddenly remembered that today is Tracy's birthday.]

Elias: [I have to celebrate with her, so I won't be coming back tonight.]

Elias: [Get some sleep. Tomorrow, I'll have someone bring you the handbag you wanted.]

A smile of quiet relief spread across my face.

I replied.

Melissa: [No need, Elias. I’ve already left. My flight is tonight.]

Melissa: [From now on, we're going our separate ways.]

"Thank you."Elias was quiet for a moment. "Are you happy now?"I smiled. "I am."I meant those two words with all my heart.Elias could tell. His eyes reddened, but he managed a small smile."I'm glad."Melissa, I didn't come here to ask you to get back together. I just wanted to tell you something in person."I'm sorry. And... thank you for having loved me once."I looked at him. There was no hatred left, but no love either. Only a faint sense of regret for what might have been.I said, "I accept your apology."For a brief moment, hope lit up his eyes. Then I continued. "But there will never be an us again."The light disappeared. He lowered his head. After a long silence, he whispered, "I know."Someone called my name from across the gallery."Ms. Carter! The media group photo is ready.""I'm coming."Just as I turned to leave, Elias spoke again."Melissa..."If I'd realized everything sooner..."Would things have been different?"I stopped walking. This time,

However, punishment could not turn back time.It could not make the birthday cake I ate alone taste sweet again. It could not erase those seventeen disappointments from my heart.Six months later, ‘Echo’ won an international Emerging Designer Award. The ceremony was held in Brighton City.I walked onto the stage wearing a black evening gown I had designed myself. The spotlight settled on me. Thunderous applause filled the room. The host smiled and asked, "Ms. Carter, who would you most like to thank today?"I had been asked that same question three years earlier.Back then, I had thanked Elias. I had thanked someone who was not even there. This time, I held my trophy, smiled, and answered, "Myself."I want to thank the version of me who got lost in love, yet still found her way back."The applause grew even louder.I saw Howard and Emma rise to their feet, clapping with proud smiles.Larisse had flown all the way to Brighton City just for the ceremony. She was crying so h

"We've known each other for twenty years. We spent nine of those years together, and we were engaged for three months." Elias’ voice cracked. "Melissa, can you really walk away from all of it?"I looked at him and asked, "Do you think it didn't hurt when I left?"He froze. My voice remained calm."When I was sitting in the airport, I thought about turning back."I remembered the seven-year-old boy who stood in front of me to protect me."I remembered the eighteen-year-old who confessed his feelings."I remembered the twenty-five-year-old who got down on one knee and proposed."Every memory hurt. Every single one."But Elias, just because something hurts doesn't mean I should go back. It only means that I truly loved you."Tears rolled down his face. It was the first time I had ever seen the grown-up Elias cry so helplessly."I was wrong. I was so wrong."Tracy's gone. My company has already paid the price."I don't care about any of it anymore. I just want you to come home

That happiness lived in the smallest moments: the warmth of a hot cup of coffee every morning, the sunset on my walk home after work, and the quiet peace of no longer waiting for someone who always forgot to come home. Not long after, the studio landed an important project. We had been invited to exhibit at a bridal showcase in Brighton City, and Howard put me in charge of designing one of the featured gowns. He told me, "Ms. Carter, I want this dress to be completely yours."Don't chase trends. Don't try to please anyone."Just create what you truly want to say."I thought about it for a long time.In the end, I gave the gown a name.I named it ‘Echo’.It was inspired by the past nine years of my life: all the hopes that had never been answered, the countless times I waited for someone who never came, and the version of myself who kept loving, even after being ignored.I designed the skirt with layer upon layer of flowing ripples, like a voice echoing through a valley until,

The most ironic part was that someone had compiled every one of Tracy's posts into a detailed timeline. The title page read, ‘How a Secretary Destroyed Someone Else’s Nine-Year Relationship in Four Months.’The second page said, ‘March 21: Fiancée Asks for Painkillers During Her Period and Gets Forgotten. Secretary Gets Hot Chocolate.’The third page stated, ‘April 7: Fiancée Waits for Dinner While Suffering From Low Blood Sugar. Secretary Is Taken to a Famous Restaurant.’The fourth page said, ‘May 20: Fiancée Spends Her Birthday Eating Cake Alone. The Secretary Celebrates Her Birthday With the Boss.’The fifth page read, ‘Business Trip to Francoria: Fiancée’s Birthday Handbag Is Forgotten. Secretary Receives a Designer Bag From the Same Brand.’Every page was filled with screenshots. The evidence was clear, complete, and impossible to dispute. The timeline spread across the internet like wildfire.Soon, Elias's company was caught in the storm as well. The public relations de

In the past, I probably would have forwarded Howard's message to Elias.I would wait for him to praise me, wait for him to say, "That's my Melissa."However, this time, I simply replied with a smiling emoji, then I set my phone face down on the desk and got back to work. The days that followed were so busy that I barely had time to think about Elias.Mornings at the studio.Afternoons meeting clients.Evenings revising designs.Little by little, I found the version of myself I had lost long ago.I caught myself getting excited over the way a piece of fabric draped.I felt fulfilled whenever a bride teared up after putting on a wedding gown I had designed.Sometimes my coworkers and I would sit by the Sienna River, eating sandwiches during lunch. Other times, I would stop on my way home and buy myself a bouquet of flowers. Not because I was waiting for someone else to give me one, but simply because I wanted one.A week later, the first wedding dress I had helped design was s
