Chapter 3

Author: Simeon Hearing
The next day, I sent Nolan everything I had on Roy.

“This is the man who caused Rose to lose control and plunge into the sea.”

Nolan did not reply. I left it at that.

I turned to Selina, who had shown up at my door again.

Only one night had passed, but her attitude had softened considerably.

“All I did was have a baby with Roy. I’m his child’s biological mother, that’s all. You know how picky Roy is. He didn’t want anyone else to have his baby, and I was the only woman he’d consider. How could I say no?”

She watched my face as she tried to reason with me.

She looked sincere.

“Anyway, enough about Roy. Let’s talk about us. After all these years, I can’t imagine my life without you. What I feel for you is different from what I feel for Roy. You don’t need to compare yourself to him.”

I laughed.

She acted as though there had ever been any love between us.

She looked almost desperate. I shook my head.

“I’ll have the divorce papers ready in three days.”

She threw herself into my arms and held on tight.

“I love you, Cameron. I’ve had feelings for you, just like I have for Roy. Please don’t make me choose.”

For the first time, she leaned in to kiss me.

Her dark lashes fluttered as she drew closer.

I made no move to stop her.

Then, just before our lips touched, I pushed her away.

“Selina, you really are awful sometimes.”

She dropped the vulnerable act.

Her expression was icy and calm. “Admit it, Cameron. You still want to be my lapdog.”

I nodded. “I do. But I’m not going to be one anymore.”

No matter how much she looked like Rose, she was not Rose.

My Rose would never have tried to have it both ways.

Selina saw my attention drift.

She shifted onto my lap and straddled me.

Then, she leaned in.

This time, I did not pull away.

We both knew I could never resist her when she did that.

Rose used to do the same thing before she fell into a coma.

When I woke up, it was the early hours of the morning.

The spot where Selina had curled up beside me was cold.

I got up to check on Tommy and found her standing in the nursery.

She was on the phone with Roy.

“Relax! Nothing happened between us. If I could’ve slept with him, why would I have needed IVF to have his baby?”

I could not hear Roy’s response, but Selina laughed. “You know he’ll do anything for me. I don’t have to sleep with him to get what I want. Just wait. He’ll hand over his son’s liver for our boy.”

I sneered. So that was why she had come to see me.

When I had begged her to go through IVF, I had said, “Once we have a baby, I’ll agree to whatever you want.”

She hesitated, then frowned. “Do you want a baby that badly?”

I nodded without hesitation.

Her expression had turned serious. “All right. I promise I’ll help you protect the baby too.”

She had promised me she would never hurt our child. Yet at Roy’s request, she decided his fate as though it meant nothing.

She had forgotten her promise to me.

I refused to accept it.

I would never let it happen.

As I backed away and returned to the bedroom, I sent the nursery’s camera footage and Tommy’s photo to Nolan.

[Tommy looks a lot like Rose.]

The next day, Nolan took Selina and me to Rose’s hospital room.

Roy was there too.

“Grandpa, what’s going on?” When Selina saw Rose’s face, she was shocked.

“Who is she? Why does she look so much like me?”

At Nolan’s prompting glance, I said, “She’s your older half-sister. You have the same father. She’s the woman Roy and I both fell in love with.”

The next news I heard about Selina was that she had been in a car accident. She was not as lucky as Rose. The crash had left her in a vegetative state.“She was on her way to see you,” Nolan said.He glanced at Selina, lying motionless in the hospital bed, then handed me a bloodstained box.“She spent the days shut away in her room, sketching a ring she said would be yours alone. She worked on the design for nearly two weeks. Once she was happy with it, she found someone to make it that very night.“She was certain you’d love it, so she left with the ring before dawn. I was going to call you and tell you to give her a chance, but I heard about the accident before I could even call you.”I was told Selina had kept the ring clenched in her hand the whole time.Even at the hospital, she had not let it go. I studied the design engraved on the ring and suddenly laughed. It showed the staircase where Selina and I used to cross paths. Two figures stood on the steps. One was Selin

I saw Selina again three days later.I was pushing Rose’s wheelchair to a bridal boutique when we ran into her.Selina stood in our path in a white wedding gown. The moment she saw me, she dropped to one knee.“Cameron, I want to marry you! If you’ll marry me again, I can look the other way while you keep seeing Rose. Just promise me that you’ll visit me once a week.”She held Tommy in her arms and looked at me hopefully.“Don’t forget, we have a son together. Just say yes, and we can be a happy little family of three!”I did not look at her. My gaze fell on Nolan in the distance. He glanced at me, then came over with a scowl.“Enough of this nonsense! Rose is your sister! What on earth are you saying?”Selina refused to back down. She stayed on her knees with Tommy in her arms and stared at Rose’s hand clasped in mine. The midday sun beat down on us.Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that Rose’s face was turning red from the sun.I gave her a reassuring look, then took

Rose saw how I kept avoiding Selina and tried to talk to me about it.“Don’t put your life on hold because of me. I know you feel guilty about what happened, but I’m all right now, aren’t I? Look at your son. He looks like both you and Selina.”She held Tommy in her arms. Her smile was gentle and calm. However, I could see the sadness she was trying to hide.My heart gave a jolt.“You know?”She looked up with a smile.“Know what?”Rose could no longer have children. She was pregnant with Roy’s baby when the crash happened. She had suffered a brain injury and such severe bleeding that she had lost her uterus. She touched Tommy’s soft cheek with a finger and smiled as though she had made peace with it.“If I’d been able to have that baby, my little one would be in kindergarten by now.”I saw the wistfulness in her eyes and could not find the words to comfort her.She stopped pretending everything was fine.“People say you see the loved ones you’ve lost after you die, don’t
