Chapter 10

Author: Jojo
For days, Nathaniel barely left Evelyn's bedside, caring for her around the clock. Only urgent military business could draw him away.

By the time he'd caught up on work, another day had passed.

"General Farrell, should we head to the hospital or go home?" his guard asked.

Nathaniel rubbed his forehead, about to answer, when the guard hesitated.

"Sir, I think you should check on Mrs. Farrell first. She took the punishment for her friends that day. All 20 blows with a wooden rod. You know how she is. She can barely handle a scratch. I don't know how badly she's hurt."

Nathaniel went still, his eyes widening. "What? She took the beating for them? What was she thinking?"

Panic seized him. The thought of Rosalie enduring that kind of pain was almost more than he could bear.

She'd always made a fuss over the smallest scratch. She couldn't bear pain or even the slightest mark on her skin. How could she possibly have endured 20 blows of the cane?

His chest tightened until he could barely breathe. He'd never felt this kind of anguish, not even when Evelyn had jumped from the building or fallen into the lake.

He couldn't understand why the news had shaken him so badly. He only knew he had to see Rosalie.

"Take me home. Now!" he ordered.

The car sped toward home.

The moment it stopped, Nathaniel jumped out. Rosalie might drive him crazy sometimes, but right now, he was worried sick about her.

As he approached the front door, however, he spotted a group of men gathered outside, talking excitedly.

He knew many of them, from military pilots and army commanders to promising young diplomats. They were some of Nelmora's most accomplished young men.

One of the commanders spotted Nathaniel and came right over, wearing a big, easy grin. "General Farrell! You're back just in time! Is what they're saying in the papers true?"

"General Farrell, now that you and Ms. Quinn are divorced, does that mean the rest of us finally have a chance with her?"

"Nathaniel, Rosalie's gorgeous, and she's so full of life! What man wouldn't fall for her? I've had my eye on her for ages, but she was your wife, so I kept my distance. Now I can finally make my move!"

"Exactly! Come on, introduce us! We're all dying to ask her out!"

The men kept talking over one another, singing Rosalie's praises and eagerly discussing their chances with her.

As Nathaniel listened to the men talking excitedly about Rosalie, a fury unlike anything he'd ever felt threatened to push him over the edge.

"You want me to introduce you to her? So you can ask her out? Have you all lost your minds?" he demanded, his voice dangerously cold.

"Rosalie is my wife!"

His outburst startled the men. They exchanged uneasy glances.

One of Nathaniel's close friends stepped forward and held out a newspaper. "Nathaniel... you haven't heard? It's right there on the front page. Your divorce is official."

Nathaniel snatched the paper from him. His eyes went straight to the bold headline.

"General Farrell and Quinn Heiress Officially Divorced!"

For a moment, Nathaniel couldn't think. His ears rang.

He and Rosalie were divorced? Since when? How could he not have known?

Before he could make sense of it, Rodney Gilliam, the Quinn family's longtime butler, came shuffling toward him. He held out a sealed box, his expression troubled.

"General Farrell, Mr. Quinn asked me to bring you this. It's the drug Ms. Cohen needs."

Nathaniel looked up sharply at Rodney. "The drug? Why would he give it to me now?"

Rodney sighed. "Ms. Quinn made a deal with her father. She asked him to give you the drug. In return, she agreed to give up her inheritance and never come back to Nelmora."

The phone rang for a long time before Rosalie finally answered. Her voice was calm, almost languid."Hello?"Nathaniel's throat tightened. He had so much he wanted to say, but the words wouldn't come. When he finally found his voice, it was hoarse and pleading, trembling on the verge of tears."Rosie... it's me. I saw the article. You're doing well. That's... that's all that matters. I… I just wanted to hear your voice."Silence stretched between them, so long that Nathaniel began to think she might hang up without another word.At last, Rosalie let out a quiet sigh. When she spoke, her voice was calm, almost serene. She sounded at peace, yet farther away from him than ever."Nathaniel, it's all in the past. I forgive you not for your sake, but for mine. I needed to let go so I could move on with my life. Please, let yourself move on, too. And don't ever come looking for me again."Before Nathaniel could say another word, the line went dead.He stood rooted to the spot, the rec

Back at the house, with Rosalie gone for good, Nathaniel locked himself in his room. He drew the curtains tight, shutting out the daylight and the rest of the world.Empty liquor bottles littered the floor. The room reeked of alcohol, and the air seemed heavy with despair. He sat on the floor, his back against the bed, clutching a yellowing photograph someone had secretly taken of Rosalie years ago at the Rose Garden in Nelmora.Beside him, a small recorder played a muffled recording on a loop. Whenever the tape ended, he rewound it and played it again. It was Rosalie humming to herself at home on a day when she'd been in good spirits. Her voice had a bright, slightly languid lilt, even through the muffled recording. Now it was a form of torture, each replay slicing through him anew.At times, a low, almost manic laugh escaped him. At others, he buried his face in his knees and broke into helpless, muffled sobs.Whenever the guards brought him food, he knocked it to the floor i

After dealing with an urgent military matter, Nathaniel raced home. All the way back, he clung to a sliver of hope he knew was foolish.Maybe, with time, the baby would make Rosalie reconsider.Maybe they still had a chance. But when he opened the front door, the house was eerily silent. Somehow, it felt even emptier than it had the first time she'd left.Once again, all her personal belongings were gone. On the living room coffee table sat a velvet box and a folded sheet of paper.A sudden sense of dread came over Nathaniel. His hands trembled as he picked up the paper and unfolded it.It was a medical record from a private clinic, confirming that Rosalie had undergone an abortion that very day. The reason was stated in cold, clinical language."Termination of pregnancy at patient's insistence."Nathaniel's vision went dark. His mind went blank, his ears rang, and his knees nearly buckled. He snapped open the velvet box. Inside lay the ring Rosalie had worn on their wedding d

As the shock and disbelief began to fade, a faint, desperate hope stirred in Nathaniel despite himself. He hardly dared let himself believe it.The baby would tie him to Rosalie in a way nothing else could.Maybe she'd think twice about leaving.Maybe he still had a chance to win her back.He looked at Rosalie, searching her face for some sign of hesitation. Instead, he found only cold disgust and unwavering resolve. Whatever hope he'd felt vanished. When Rosalie finally spoke, her voice was utterly devoid of emotion. Every word rang through the living room with chilling clarity."I'm getting an abortion. I'm not having this baby."Nathaniel's chest tightened so painfully he could barely breathe. He rushed over, crouched in front of Rosalie, and reached for her hand. His voice trembled as he pleaded with her more desperately than ever."Rosie, please, don't! This is our baby. It's all my fault. Hate me. Punish me however you want, but the baby's innocent. Please, keep the baby

Nathaniel could see the resolve in Rosalie's eyes. She'd made up her mind to leave him, and something inside him finally snapped.Panic and despair overwhelmed him.He seized Rosalie's wrist and dragged her up to the rooftop, ignoring her struggles and furious protests. The last of the sunlight stained the sky a deep, bloodred hue.He pulled her toward the edge of the roof. Beyond the flimsy railing, the ground lay several stories below. His grip tightened around her arm. His bloodshot eyes were wild, and his voice shook with pain and desperation. He sounded as though he were threatening her and begging her at the same time."Rosie! If you leave me... if you really walk away..."He pointed to the ground far below."I'll jump! If seeing me dead would make you happy, if it'd make you feel even a little better, I'll jump right now! You think I won't?"Rosalie was trapped against the railing, her upper body leaning dangerously over the edge. The wind whipped her long hair around h

Nathaniel's expression darkened, his eyes turning frighteningly cold.He barely spared Evelyn a glance before turning to the guards behind him. "Get her out of here! And don't let her back into this house without my permission!"The guards stepped forward immediately. They politely but firmly took the scissors from Evelyn and began escorting her out.Evelyn stared at him in disbelief, and she cried out, "Nathaniel! How could you do this to me? Have you forgotten how things used to be—""Evelyn," Nathaniel cut her off, his voice devoid of warmth. He fixed her with a piercing stare. "For old times' sake, I'll make sure you get the drug you need until you've fully recovered. But that's all you'll ever get from me."He paused, his next words carrying an unmistakable warning."If you bother Rosie again or push me any further, our past won't protect you. You'll be on your own with your treatment."Whatever hope Evelyn had left vanished. She stared at Nathaniel, realizing just how fa
