Cheyenne opened her eyes looking across at the empty bed. She wondered how Nick was taking this morning. He had left sometime during the night while she slept and she was honestly surprised he had not left earlier. Not that she minded cuddling up next to him. Sleeping in his arms has felt peaceful.
Time had stopped for them last night and now in the light of day, it almost seemed as if it had all been a dream. Rolling over grabbing her phone Cheyenne was surprised to see that Nick had messaged her around 2 am. Opening the message she read, “just for the record I’m not running I’m going home.”
Cheyenne smiled replying, “whatever you could have said bye.”
Before she was able to set her phone down he responded, “how do you know I didn’t. Besides that whole text was a goodbye.”
She liked this playful Nick a lot, she liked it even better than he was still talking to her this morning after what they had shar
Pulling up Monday morning Nick let out a mumbled, "fuck," as he saw Ed's truck already in the parking lot. Ed never came to the job site in the mornings. Could he have found out about him and Cheyenne? No, he knew she wouldn't go run and tell her dad what had happened. In fact, he was pretty sure he could trust her to not tell anyone.Letting out a sigh Nick got out of his truck and made his way inside. The front light was off but he could see Ed's light on in his office. Slowly making his way inside he paused in the door seeing Ed flipping through blueprints. "Didn't expect to see you this morning."Ed looked up at Nick clearly aggravated. "Me either I'm supposed to be in Tyler today." He pulled a blueprint out of his stack and began rolling it up. "It's that damn Hawkins again. Now she wants us to remodel her barn. I don't have time to remodel a barn this summer."Nick shook his head relieved that Cheyenne was in no way involved with Ed's appearance. "She's a
Nick didn't come back to the office till almost close. He hadn't meant to stay gone so long but he needed the air, he needed to clear his thoughts. He was already having doubts about playing Cheyenne's little game. They were too close to each other, there was no not seeing each other. As he walked in Cheyenne looked up from her phone frowning at him but she didn't say anything. "You wanna go home early?”She shrugged looking down, "I mean I guess." Looking up she tilted her head, "do you want me to go home early?"Nick stopped beside her, "so is that a no?""I'm not going to say no if that's what you are asking." Looking up at him Cheyenne sighed, "so instead of running you're sending me home now?"Nick let out a laugh that surprised them both. "How do you know I wasn't sending you to my house?"Cheyenne rolled her eyes, "don't play with me, Nick. I do know where you live and we both know you aren't ready for that."Nick took he
The moment Nick walked outside to move her car Cheyenne looked at the two dogs and patted her legs telling them to come here. They both looked at the door before cautiously walking forward a step. Cheyenne laughed, "come on before he comes back."When Nick walked back in he shook his head. Cheyenne was still on the couch but now had a dog on either side of her laying down with their head on her lap. Both dogs avoided looking up at him. "I leave you alone for 5 minutes and you already have my dogs doing things they know better than."Cheyenne petted them, "I don't know what you're talking about."As he walked closer to the couch he had to laugh as both dogs turned their heads away from him as if to say if they couldn't see him he wouldn't be able to see them. "Why do I feel as if you're going to come to turn my life upside down and leave me to pick up the mess?"Looking up as he sat down beside her she shrugged, "I'm not trying to. I just like animals and
Nick leaned forward squeezing Cheyenne's shoulders. She was sat at his feet playing fetch with his dogs even though he had already told her they weren't allowed to play in the house. He would have better luck talking to the wall. Not that he minded, Cheyenne had been a welcome distraction to his hectic world. She had stayed with him every night since Monday but tonight would be her last this week. Tate would be down this weekend and she would return to the cabin. It had scared them both a little how quickly each had found a place in the other's life.Cheyenne and Nick were strictly business at work to anyone who might happen to see them. Nick's house had clearly been the best choice of places to stay and Cheyenne had already taken over a drawer in his room and bathroom. When that had happened he wasn't sure but it made sense. There was no need in her waking up super early just to run to the cabin and get dressed although that would probably be the smarter thing to do.
Cheyenne looked up from her computer as the door opened. A blonde-headed boy came in that could be none other than Tate. She smiled at him even though she was confused, he wasn't supposed to be there. Nick was picking him up later today."Hey, Tate..." Cheyenne started before the unforgettable Lindsey walked in cutting her off."Where is Nick? He isn't answering any of my calls." Lindsey looked up and frowned, "who are you?""I'm Chey..."Once again she was cut off. "Oh my God Cheyenne...haven't you grown up.""Ugh yeah, I guess," Cheyenne said watching as the tall blonde strolled in the room. "So Nick is on-site handling a problem. He's been gone for a while."Lindsey sighed, "I hate to ask you Cheyenne but I have to leave earlier than expected. This is a new job and I can't afford to already mess with people's plans. Do you think Tate could sit here with you?"Cheyenne shook her head, "oh yeah not a problem. He can keep me entertain
Sitting on her front porch Cheyenne looked out at the lightning in the distance. A cold front had already set in making it nice for a Texas summer night. She didn't really know what to do with herself. Most nights she would have already started drinking, maybe even gone with friends to a club but not tonight. She was trying to keep her promise to Nick. Why? Hell, she didn't know. She didn't know why she did half of what she did anymore.Seeing her phone ring Cheyenne smiled seeing Miranda's name pop up on her screen. She hadn't seen Miranda since they had graduated. "Please tell me you are in town," she answered.Miranda laughed, "girl, unfortunately. Tell me you want to come with me to Johnson's. He is supposed to be having a party and there is no way in hell I'm going alone."She knew it was a bad idea, she knew she would run into Kyle and way too much drink to imagine but she wanted to hang out with Miranda. "Yeah, you want me to pick you up, or do you want t
Cheyenne could hardly sleep. Normally after she drank she passed out the moment she hit her bed. Tonight, well tonight her thoughts were on Nick. Nick and only Nick. Was he mad at her? Disappointed was more like it. She couldn’t believe she had actually called him. She sighed, she would never sleep thinking about seeing him later. She had missed him far more than she had thought possible. Far more than was healthy for a fling. Was this infatuation. She hadn’t known him long enough to call herself in love.
This time it was Nick unable to sleep staring up at the ceiling fan. Cheyenne was cuddled up beside him fast asleep but his mind would not turn off. He wasn't even positive why. After Cheyenne's surprise visit in the shower and the following rounds in the bed, they had both gotten up and cleaned up before getting dressed. Cheyenne had helped him change the sheets on his bed and had even gone and started the wash for him while he found them something to eat for supper.Nick had ended up cooking steaks on the grill. He had been craving them and she hadn't cared. The grilling had only reminded him of Ed's upcoming 4th of July BBQ. It was a yearly tradition, one he couldn't avoid. One she couldn't avoid. He wondered what it would be like to see her, be so close to her, but have to ignore her.Neither had brought the BBQ up, even though it was only a day away. Sure they ignored each other at work when others were in the office but he could go to his office and shut h
