Coming back after the divorce

Elaine Parker had a smile on her face as she lit up the candles in the dining room. Today was her husband, Travis Parker's, birthday, and she wanted them to celebrate together. Just them alone without having friends and family around. She knew that Travis had been so busy in the last couple of months that he didn’t get time to even go back home, thus she hoped that this day, she could use it to force him to have a good rest.

“When will you be back from work?” she texted him upon seeing that it was quite late and he wasn’t here yet.

She had spoken to him in the morning and told him that she had a surprise for him in the evening, so she would be waiting for him. The man had promised to arrive early, but it was already past nine o’clock, yet he wasn’t present.

Elaine took a deep breath, as this wasn’t the first time such a thing had happened, and was even ready to wait for him to come back. However, deep down, she was disappointed and tried her best not to think too much about all the times Travis had not shown up for their dates or when she needed her.

Two hours hurriedly passed, yet he had not arrived, making her start worrying. She called his phone, but it wasn’t picked up. She called once more, and this time, it was picked but the only difference was that it wasn’t the deep voice she was expecting; it came from the other side, but a soft voice.

“Brother Travis is taking a shower,” the person said, and it shocked Elaine as she recognized that voice. It was her stepsister, Rosa Sawyer. She couldn’t believe it and thought that her ears were playing tricks on her.

“Rosa?” she asked in a low tone, as she was even afraid of speaking.

“Sister?” Rosa called then kept quiet before continuing, “I am sorry, I didn’t know that it was my sister who was calling. The phone screen indicated an unknown caller, and there was just a string of numbers. If I did, I wouldn’t have picked it up,” her voice was trembling but what could Elaine not understand?

Having lived with her since she was a kid, she knew what kind of person her sister was and how good she was at acting. Also, why say that if she knew it was her, she wouldn’t have picked up the call? She took a deep breath as she prepared to question Rosa, but the latter had already hung up the call.

She tried calling the number again, but she was met with ‘the number you have dialed is currently unavailable. We… She hung up the call as she understood that Rosa had switched off her husband’s phone.

She stood up and started walking around the room nervously, wondering what Travis and Rosa were doing together so late at night, even with Travis in the shower and Rosa present. She couldn’t help but feel betrayed. She looked at the melting candles, and as the light dimmed and the more she felt hurt. What could she not understand? What would a woman and a man be doing together at this kind of time?

Tears started flowing down her cheek as she found it unbelievable. She wiped the tears, and she looked stubborn, thinking that it might not be the case, and maybe something had happened, so she would just wait for her husband to arrive and ask him.

Her phone beeped, and she hurriedly walked to where she had placed it as she thought that Travis' phone had been switched on and she could now call him. However, she felt disappointed when she saw that her sister was the one who had sent her a text. She took a deep breath as she opened the text, only to find pictures of Rosa lying on Travis' bare chest. Rosa was in a clear nightgown. The duvet was covering their body, but from where the duvet had reached, she could see that they were naked.

 Her face paled as tears started flowing down her cheeks, as she found them unbelievable. Some other pictures were of Travis walking out of the bathroom and Rosa seated on the bed in a nightdress. She never thought that her husband would ever do such a thing and especially with her sister.

Rosa looked down on herself and mocked herself. She was wearing a baggy T-shirt and shorts. Everyone had always said that Rosa was the prettiest among them, but Travis had always told her that that wasn’t true. She was the prettiest in his eyes, but now. Rosa felt mocked, and she started crying.

Her phone started ringing, causing her to hurriedly wipe her tears as she hoped that her husband would call her or arrive home. Seeing the name on the screen, she felt disappointed, a sharp pain in her heart, and she started being anxious, shivering as she was forced to believe everything.

“Sweetie, I'm outside your mansion. Didn’t you say that you wanted to give Travis the last car custom that he had been wanting? I am sorry that I arrived late, but it still isn’t too late to gift him, right?” the person on the other side said immediately the call was connected.

However, when Rosa heard the voice, she started crying loudly, startling the person on the other end. “Sweetheart, what’s wrong? Talk to brother,” he said worriedly.

He was currently outside the mansion, but hearing his sisters' hoarse cries, he got out of his car and ran towards the mansion’s door. He tried opening it and was stunned when it opened. Still, he didn’t dare to think too much of the reason the house wasn’t locked at this kind of hour.

“Elaine,” he called out when he saw his sister on the floor, crying. He hugged her, and the latter continued crying.

Seeing the call had been disconnected, the photo of Rosa and Travis together in bed was on the screen, and her brother saw it as the phone was on the floor next to Elaine.

“Fucking bastards! I will kill him!” he shouted as he found it unbelievable. He took his phone, wanting to call his secretary so that he could investigate where the man was, but when he saw how broken Elaine looked, he calmed himself as he thought that he might deal with him later on.

“I want to leave this place,” Elaine lifted her head, stared at her brother, and said in a hoarse voice.
