River’s POV

I didn’t know what I was expecting when Ethan finally showed up at Old Paul’s, but I swear, for a second, I almost didn’t recognize him. He looked… older, heavier, like he had carried something all night that had dragged the life out of him. His hair was a little messy, his jaw tight, and when his eyes swept the room and finally landed on us, my chest pulled tight.

He walked over slow, like every step weighed something. I shifted in my chair, pretending to sip from my drink, but my throat was dry. Noah sat across from me, his hands folded on the table like he’d been bracing himself for this moment since the call came in.

Ethan didn’t even ask if the seat was free, he just pulled it out and sat beside me. The scrape of the chair against the floor made me flinch. His shoulder brushed mine, warm, tense, and for a moment all I could do was stare at his face.

He looked wrecked.

“Thanks for coming,” he muttered, voice low, like he didn’t want anyone else to hear.

I swallowed, my

  • Never Mine To Love   Traffic.

River's Pov.The car was quiet except for the sound of other vehicles honking around us. Traffic was thick, moving slowly like we were crawling through the streets. The evening sun had started to dip, painting the sky in soft orange, but inside the car, the air felt tight. I leaned my head against the window and watched people walking by. Some were in a rush, some looked tired, others were just going about their lives like nothing was wrong. Meanwhile, my chest felt heavy, and my thoughts kept circling back to Karden, to Ethan, to everything that had been happening.Noah had one hand on the wheel and the other resting on his thigh. His jaw was tight, eyes fixed on the road even though we weren’t moving much. I could tell something was going through his head. He looked calm on the surface, but I’d been around him long enough to know better.I turned slightly to face him. “Are you going to tell me what’s going on, or are we just going to sit here pretending everything is fine?”He didn’

  • Never Mine To Love   Anything Stupid.

Daniel’s POVThe call with Karden had ended hours ago, but his voice was still in my head. Arrogant, smug, dripping with the kind of confidence only someone too young to understand the world could carry. He thought he could use me like a chess piece, like I was too weak to push back. He was wrong.I sat in my office, the lamp burning low. My desk was cluttered with papers I had stopped grading, my pen lying across the page. I stared at my phone, the recording app open, the file saved neatly. Karden’s voice was clear in it, threatening me, trying to control me.For a long moment, I debated. I wasn’t the type to drag anyone into my mess. I had kept silent about too many things, things I should have spoken up about sooner. But Karden had crossed the line. He wasn’t just destroying me, he was playing with other people’s lives.I scrolled through my contacts until I landed on a name I hadn’t touched in years. Christian Hale.I hesitated only once before pressing call. The line rang, then a

  • Never Mine To Love   Something Brewing.

River's Pov.My stomach was still in knots when Noah told me he wanted to go see Ethan alone. He said it like it was nothing, like it made sense, but it didn’t sit right with me.“You’re not going without me,” I told him flat out. My voice cracked a little, but I meant it.Noah’s hand tightened on his car keys, his jaw set the way it always did when he was trying to hold his ground. “River, maybe it’s better if I go first. Just to talk to him, to figure out what’s going on. You’ve been through enough already.”I shook my head before he could finish. “No. We go together. I want to know what’s happening, Noah. I’m not going to sit around waiting for you to come back and tell me half of it. Not this time.”His eyes softened, but I saw the hesitation there, too. “River…”“I’m serious,” I cut him off. “If you walk out that door without me, don’t bother coming back.”That got him. His shoulders dropped, and he let out a long breath. “Alright.”Relief washed over me, though my chest was stil

  • Never Mine To Love   Disgust And Weakness.

Karden’s POVI slammed the door harder than I should have. Didn’t even care if Ethan heard it. My chest was burning, my head buzzing, like every word we threw at each other was still stuck in my throat. I kept walking, fast, my bag sliding down my arm. Damn strap wouldn’t stay on.The night air outside was heavy, almost damp, as I dragged my suitcase across the sidewalk. The wheels rattled against the uneven ground, loud enough to make me grit my teeth. My chest still burned from the fight with Ethan. His voice, his accusing eyes, the way he had looked at me when he saw those pictures—like I was poison. Maybe I was. Maybe that’s all I’d ever been.I didn’t care anymore. Not about him, not about Noah, not about River. Let them all rot together in their happy little circle. I was finished. The Uber driver had called me twice already. He was waiting down the street. I should have just kept walking. But instead, I stopped under the glow of a street lamp, yanked my phone from my pocket, an

  • Never Mine To Love   The Culprit.

Ethan’s POVKarden’s voice cut through the air, sharp and angry.“What are you doing with my phone?”I froze, the phone still in my hand. My chest tightened, my throat dry. The glow of the screen burned against my skin like it carried poison. His words slammed into me, but my eyes kept drifting back to the messages I had already seen. I couldn’t unsee them. The pictures. Him and Daniel. His bare body tangled with someone else’s. His hand on Daniel’s chest. The smirk on his face. And then the worst of it, those same pictures sent to a reporter.Slowly, I lifted my gaze to him. He was standing there in the doorway, cold eyes locked on me, his jaw tight. He didn’t even look scared of being caught. He looked annoyed.“Karden,” I said, my voice low but trembling. “What the hell is this?”He stepped forward, his hand reaching for the phone. “Give it back.”But I pulled it closer to my chest, my fingers clutching it tight like if I let go, the truth would slip away. My heart pounded. Anger a
