River’s POV

"He's Lying To You"

I had found another note when I got home on my doorsteps. I didn’t sleep. Not at all. I just lay there, staring up at the ceiling in the dark, hour after hour. My mind wouldn’t stop.

That picture, that note, it kept spinning around and around in my head like a ferris wheel I couldn’t get out of.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his face. Daniel’s face. His eyes, his smile, his voice. And then, I saw that one line. The one written in rough, messy black ink:

He’s lying to you.

It felt like those four words had crawled into my chest and refused to let go.

Morning came fast, but it felt like it took forever too. I got dressed before the sun even came up all the way.

I didn’t eat. I didn’t drink anything.

My stomach felt tight, like it was tied in a knot.

I stuffed the photo and the note into my hoodie pocket and left.

I walked fast. Not because I was late. But because I felt like if I didn’t move quickly, I might fall apart. My thoughts staye

  • Never Mine To Love   Talk.

Daniel's Pov.It had rained that morning. Not a big, wild storm or anything dramatic. Just one of those quiet, steady rains that taps gently on the windows and makes the whole world smell like wet leaves and muddy grass. You know the kind. Where everything feels soft and gray, like the sky forgot to drink its coffee and now it’s just… dragging. The sky looked tired. Really tired. Like it had cried all night and now didn’t have the energy to pull itself together. It was pale gray and a little moody, hanging low like it wanted to wrap itself in a blanket and call in sick.Honestly? Same.I was in my office, pretending to work, a student report open right in front of me. I’d been “reading” it for—who knows—twenty minutes? Thirty? It could’ve been an hour. I hadn’t read a single word.My eyes kept doing that thing where they wander off without permission, like bored kids sneaking out of class. They drifted toward the corner of my desk.To my phone.Just sitting there. So still. So quiet.

  • Never Mine To Love   Detective Noah.

River's Pov.After the call.after that strange, scratchy voice came through the phone and made my whole apartment feel cold and empty, I just sat there. Right on the rug. Cross-legged, like I was about to meditate or find some kind of peace or whatever.Spoiler: peace didn’t show up.The orange juice sat beside me like it was confused. Like, Hey, weren’t we having fun? It left a little wet circle on the floor that would probably annoy me later. My sketchbook was still open in front of me, the pencil stuck between the pages like it had given up halfway. I couldn’t even remember what I’d been drawing. Maybe a cat wearing glasses or a weird toaster. It didn’t matter now.My heart was pounding like it was trying to get out of my chest. Loud and heavy. Kind of over-the-top. I hugged my arms around myself and rocked a little. Not on purpose. My body just did it on its own. Like it didn’t know what else to do.I didn’t really cry. Not the messy kind you see in movies. Just a couple tears sl

  • Never Mine To Love   Back Again.

River’s POVIt had been a month.Thirty-two days, to be exact.Since the last time I saw him.Since the last time I heard his voice. Not a call. Not a text. Not a voice note or a message typed in a hurry. Not even one of those ridiculous memes he used to send—always the weird ones with cats or frogs in hats—just because he said I laughed like a kid when I saw them.Nothing.And still… I kept looking. The first week was painful. Every morning, I’d wake up with that tight feeling in my chest. The kind you get when you forget something important and then suddenly remember it in a rush that makes your stomach sink.I kept thinking maybe I’d missed a message. Maybe it was there and I just hadn’t noticed.I checked. Then I checked again.I deleted our thread—twice. Told myself I was done. That if I couldn’t see it, it wouldn’t hurt as much. That if I got rid of it, maybe it’d stop haunting me.But I couldn’t help it.I re-downloaded the app one night around 2 a.m. I stared at the blank scre

  • Never Mine To Love   Beginning Of The End.

Daniel’s POV I sat behind the wheel, parked just two blocks from the café, staring out the windshield like maybe I’d catch a glimpse of River walking away. But he didn’t come back. And I didn’t go after him.The rain had stopped. But inside me, something still poured. Slowly. Quietly. Like sorrow sinking deep into the cracks.I had done what I came to do.I ended it.Not because I stopped caring. But because I cared too much.Because loving him made me feel alive. And broken. All at once.I didn’t know how to hold that in my hands anymore.I didn’t drive home right away. I didn’t feel ready to face the quiet in that house, or the way Olivia would look at me and ask questions with her eyes. I didn’t feel ready to sit with Luciana’s gentle voice or pass Elliot’s room and wonder if he still dreamed of that night. So I drove. Aimlessly. Nowhere special. The roads were wet but empty. My wipers swiped across the glass with a tired rhythm. Streetlights blinked gold on the pavement, casting

  • Never Mine To Love   Only Heartbreak.

River’s POVHe looked older.Or maybe it was just the lighting.I couldn’t tell. The café around us hummed with quiet energy. Mugs clinked. Doors whooshed open. People whispered. Steam curled from espresso machines. But none of that touched me.I sat opposite him, feeling a coldness creep into my bones. My gray hoodie clung damp and heavy. Strands of hair were stuck to my forehead. My palms itched from the rain, but deeper than that was an ache in my chest. He hadn’t spoken yet.Neither had I.We sat like strangers on opposite shores of a vast ocean, heartbeats echoing in silence. We were two people pretending we’d never fit together, never intertwined, never belonged. But that pretended truth tore at me. My fingers twisted in my lap, knuckles stretching tight over bone. Finally, he cleared his throat—soft, almost timid.“Thank you for coming,” he said. His voice barely carried over the low hum of café life. It was the first sound he’d made, and it hurt—like it belonged to someone els

  • Never Mine To Love   Time For Good-bye.

Daniel’s POVI stared at the message on my phone like it might disappear if I blinked too hard. Can we talk?Four small words. They looked harmless, sitting there in that little text bubble. Just a question. Just an invitation. But for me, they felt like a storm. Everything inside me had gone quiet the second I typed them out. Like I had exhaled something I didn’t realize I’d been holding in for so long.I hovered over the send button. My thumb shook.I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t sure I’d ever be ready. But I tapped send anyway. As soon as I did, my stomach twisted. The cold feeling started in my hands, then spread. Like someone had cracked open my chest and let winter pour in.I dropped the phone on the counter. Couldn’t bear to keep looking at it. I turned away, walked into the bedroom slowly, feeling like each step cost something. Something invisible and heavy.I stood by the dresser for a long time, just staring at the clothes inside. I couldn’t think. Couldn’t even remember what I us
