Chapter 2

Author: Nine Leaves
Feeling unwell, I fell asleep in a daze. It wasn't until Connor returned at midnight and turned on the bedroom lights that I woke up.

His expression was grim. "Wynn, why did you block me?"

Seeing that I didn't respond, he walked up and aggressively shoved his cold hands into my nightgown. Then, he pressed it against my lower abdomen.

My body's discomfort worsened.

He withdrew his hands and said, "That's for being petty. I told you. She's just a client. I only helped her out of pity.

A dull ache throbbed in my lower abdomen. I was in so much pain that I didn't have the energy or the will to fight him.

Connor sighed helplessly. "Fine. Don't be mad. I'm sorry I made a mistake. I'll do better, alright?"

His half-hearted words were the same old script I'd heard countless times. In the end, I was the only one who ever took them seriously.

The thought left a bitter ache in my chest.

Noticing my pale face, Connor offered to get me some dark chocolate. "Are you having your period again? You never take care of yourself. Let me get you some dark chocolate.

"I treat you well, but you're always making me mad."

His patronizing concern stung me. A pregnant woman would never get her period, and he'd know if he ever paid attention. It seemed that he'd never cared about me.

While Connor was rummaging through the fridge, he left his phone behind. A notification from "Quinn the Menace" flashed across the screen.

I calmly looked away and reached out to grab the glass of hot water on the nightstand.

Connor seemed to have materialized out of thin air, suddenly appearing and swiftly snatching the phone away.

In the process, he knocked over the glass and spilled hot water all over the back of my hand.

My hand instantly scalded red.

"What were you doing? I told you there's nothing between me and Quinn, yet you were trying to snoop through my phone while I was away! Stop being so sensitive!"

I studied the panic flickering through his eyes and calmly said, "I just wanted to drink some water."

My calm seemed to catch him off guard. Realizing he'd overreacted, he tried to smooth things over. "Still stubborn, huh? You burned your hand, didn't you? Let me see."

He took my hand over and gently blew on the burn. "I'm your husband. If you don't trust me, no one will. Marriage is built on trust—"

"Is it?" I cut him off and stared straight at him as if trying to peer into the depths of his soul.

"Of course. The baby's further along now. It should be fine, right?" He showed no guilt and tried to lean in for some intimacy, but I turned my face away to dodge his touch.

Irritation flashed in his eyes. He was about to speak when someone entered the house.

It was Quinn. She stood in the living room in a revealing lace nightgown. Her hair was a mess, and her eyes red-rimmed.

Connor instinctively moved toward her but glanced at me. He forced himself to maintain a serious demeanor. "It's late. Why are you here?"

I looked at them indifferently. "How does she know the passcode to our home?"

He stiffened unnaturally and replied, "She left something here when I was handling her case. We weren't home back then, so I told her to get them herself."

Quinn shrank into the corner. "Mr. Lockwood is right, Wynn. I'm sorry for bothering you, but the power went out at my place. I got scared, so I-I…"

Connor stepped forward and draped a coat over her shoulders. His gaze filled with pity as it fell on Quinn.

After that incident, Connor and Quinn's relationship deteriorated rapidly. Connor grew colder and more indifferent toward her with each passing day.Once, Quinn cheated on him. The affair was so tense that she ended up having a miscarriage. When Connor found out, he flew into a rage and beat her up so badly that she ended up in the hospital that night.Quinn laughed hysterically. "Kill me, and I'll still die as the lady boss of Vantage Legal. If you're not afraid of the scandal, why should I be?"Connor's eyes were bloodshot with rage. "You filthy whore. You're married and still sleeping around. Aren't you scared of contracting some sex disease?"Quinn burst out laughing mockingly. "Isn't that exactly how I got you?"Her words hit a nerve, and Connor's body went slack. He collapsed into a chair with hands covering his face as tears seeped through his fingers. He wanted a divorce, but Quinn stubbornly refused and warned, "If you divorce me, I'll expose everything about you!"She

As Connor held me tightly, I suddenly felt a cold dampness against my neck. He was crying. His voice trembled as he begged, "Please give me one more chance, Wynn. Don't leave me. I don't want to lose you. I really don't…"Please, Wynn. I'm begging you not to leave me."One could easily fall in love, and the same was true for falling out of love. The hardest part was staying in love.I pried off his hands with force and looked into his tear-filled eyes. "If you want what's best for me, sign the papers."With that, I turned to leave.Connor stared in the direction I'd left. His heart clenched so painfully that he could barely breathe. "Wynn… Wynn…" he murmured. He ended up signing the papers. I knew him too well to understand that a prestigious lawyer like him would never allow such a scandal to tarnish his name.…I grew adept at dealing with the affairs of the company.A cup of warm milk appeared on my desk. It was from Hector. "You should take care of your health, Ms. Carrin

"Just sign it already. It's better for me, you, and Quinn."As we were leaving, Hector couldn't resist adding fuel to fire. "Quinn, let's find some time to exchange thoughts on being homewreckers, shall we?"Watching us walk away, Connor panicked and quickly followed. "Wynn, let's talk."I looked at him calmly. "What is there to talk about?"He stubbornly blocked my way and stayed silent for a moment before saying, "I didn't think things through, and I made you suffer. About our baby, I…"He paused before continuing, "I let you both down, but we still can have another. We can go back to how we used to be. Let's not get divorced."For the past two years, conflicts had grown between us. Connor never tried to resolve them, no matter the cause. He only knew how to run from it.I couldn't remember the last time he looked at me with such sincerity. It'd been too long. The memories had blurred, and so had our love."It's too late." I pushed past him and headed toward the private room.

The elevator doors opened, and I saw Connor and Quinn. For a brief moment, Connor's eyes lit up when he saw me. However, as soon as he noticed Hector standing behind me, his gaze darkened. "Wynn, who is he?"I glanced at Quinn behind him and smirked. "What do you think?"When Quinn met my eyes, her body tensed as if unpleasant memories had rushed back to her. Connor frowned and seemed to catch the implication behind my words."I admit I caused the miscarriage. I know I messed up, but this has nothing to do with Quinn. If you're mad, take it out on me."I shot him a cold glare. "Don't forget what I said, Mr. Lockwood. Tomorrow's the last day."With that, I turned and walked toward the private room with Hector.Connor seemed to sense my resolve because panic flashed in his eyes. He took a big step forward and reached out to grab me, only for Hector to step between us.Connor's hand grasped at thin air. For a second, something in his gaze cracked. His expression darkened, and

The scandals vanished almost immediately. I knew exactly who was behind it.Connor remained silent until the day before I planned to file in court.Standing at the gate of my villa, his entire presence radiated gloom. The barely restrained fury in his eyes was almost amusing.Once he saw me, he stormed over. "Wynn, what the hell is your problem? Using our baby as a bargaining chip. Is that your idea of a joke?"I studied his familiar face and realized how much of a stranger he'd become. It was as if I'd never truly known him at all.To him, everything I did was probably nothing more than childish tantrums."Let's talk somewhere else."We chose a nearby restaurant. In the private room, Connor fixed his gaze on me and demanded, "I want an answer. What is going on with you?"I met his eyes and smiled faintly. "I gave you the answer, but if you insist on hearing it again, fine. Your baby is gone, and so is our marriage."His expression darkened further with rage, and his voice lac

After that phone call, I heard nothing more from Connor. An investigation revealed he'd been detained for drunk driving.Still recovering from the miscarriage, I spent my days resting at home until a friend invited me to her newly opened winery to unwind."I told you Connor has that slimy, untrustworthy look. He was never good enough for you. Anyway, forget him. I've got a sweet new guy to introduce to you…"Her chattering eased my mood. I found myself relaxing a little until a familiar figure entered my view.Quinn saw me, too. Her eyes filled with scorn as she sauntered over. She was practically flaunting herself."Oh, Wynn, what are you doing here? Do you have any idea how hard Connor has been searching for you?"She put on a regretful expression and clicked her tongue. "You shouldn't have used your baby as leverage. That just disgusts him more. Were you afraid of losing too badly?"Connor and I are getting married soon. I'll be the new lady boss of the law firm, so be sure t

Once the plane touched down, I called my lawyer. The paperwork was efficient, and the divorce papers were soon delivered to Connor's office.I noticed the wrinkles at the corner of Dad's eyes and felt a pang of sorrow.Years ago, he disapproved of my marriage with Connor and warned me that Connor was cunning and disloyal. He said I'd suffer, but I refused to listen and stubbornly stayed in the neighboring city.Back then, Connor had nothing. Even the startup funds for his law firm came from Dad.It was true that I did love him back then, and so was the indifference I now felt for him. It was said that success came at the cost of personal relationships. I used to believe it wasn't true and that no one could predict the future.Dad watched me silently. "It's better to turn back now than break yourself against the rocks of stubbornness."His words drowned me with guilt. After Mom's death, it'd just been me and Dad, yet I had still let him down."I'm not going anywhere this time

Connor sighed in relief and started explaining, "Don't be mad. I had no idea Quinn left her lingerie. I slept in the living room last night. Check the cameras if you don't trust me."I snapped the box shut and replied, "I trust you."My overly calm response sent Connor frowning. He softened his tone and said, "Don't be upset, honey. I swear there's nothing between us. You have to trust me. If you don't, I can call her right now." I wondered what his parents had told him as he surprisingly pulled out his phone and made a call. "Quinn, what were you doing? Why did you deliberately leave your lingerie at my house to make my wife misunderstand?"I watched him. I almost wanted to tell him what a terrible actor he was, but I ended up smiling and saying nothing. He could put on his little performance if he wanted. After tomorrow, we'd be strangers anyway.Connor grinned and pulled me in for a hug, just like when we used to be in love. "All's fine as long as you're not mad. I swear I'

"It's fine. You can stay here tonight, and I'll check your place in the morning. Wear this. Don't catch a cold," Connor replied.Quinn shot me a provocative gaze. Then, she bit her lip and murmured, "Wynn, I'll leave if you're not comfortable with this. Please don't fight Mr. Lockwood because of me."Connor's expression darkened as he turned to me. "She's in such a terrible state, so stop playing the jealous wife. She's young and newly divorced. Be more understanding, alright?"A sharp cramp twisted through my abdomen. I could barely remain standing, let alone process what he'd said."Whatever." I turned and walked into the bedroom.Connor seemed briefly stunned before he turned around and settled Quinn into the guest room. The bar of dark chocolate was delivered to her instead. He never returned to our bedroom, and it was obvious where he spent the night.Connor and I started dating in college. Once, we were walking back to campus after a date night when a group of thugs appr
