Chapter 4

作者: July
The entire thing felt so absurd I almost wanted to laugh.

Mother came over and took my hand. "Hurry up and thank your sister. She'd do anything for you."

Father added, "Julianne has always been sensible and obedient. Remember, you're the one who owes her. Once you move in, you'd better behave."

My fingers tightened, and I let out a sudden, bitter laugh.

I hadn't even realized my eyes had turned red. I turned to leave, but Adrian caught hold of me.

"Where are you going?"

"Don't touch me!" I finally lost control and raised my voice.

Everyone froze at the sound.

Julianne bit her lip as though she'd suffered a terrible injustice. "Maddie, are you misunderstanding me? Everything I've done has been for you.

"I'm only afraid you'll be kidnapped again."

She reached for me, and I shoved her away.

I hadn't used much force, yet Julianne fell to the floor.

"They wanted you back then, not me!" I shouted at her.

Mother immediately rushed to help her. "Maddie, you're an ungrateful brat!"

Father snapped, "The Conti family didn't raise a daughter like you! We should've let those kidnappers kill you!"

I stared at them quietly as my emotions gradually settled.

"When did any of you ever try to save me? Don't perform this 'for your own good' routine again."

Adrian's gaze turned cold.

"Madeline Conti!

"Are you really going to behave like this?

"Why can't you appreciate what people do for you?"

Julianne had hurt her ankle in the fall and couldn't stand. Adrian hurriedly lifted her into his arms while she sobbed against his chest.

"Don't blame Maddie. This is all my fault."

Mother urged them to get Julianne to a hospital.

Adrian suppressed his anger. "Apologize to Jules."

I turned my face away.

"Fine. Don't regret this. We're leaving." Adrian carried Julianne to the car at once, with my parents following behind.

Not one of them looked back.

They simply abandoned me in the countryside.

Before they left, I heard Adrian say, "She'll call me when she realizes she was wrong."

Their car disappeared down the road.

I remained outside the house as cold wind slipped down my collar. Shivering, I crouched on the ground in pain.

Darkness fell quickly, followed by a light rain. My phone had no signal, so I started walking toward the city.

Tears blurred my vision until I could barely see the road.

I forced myself onward despite the ache in my ankles.

Strange birdcalls echoed around me, and I hugged my arms in fear.

I had no idea how long I'd walked when my phone finally lit up.

I had a faint signal at last.

I immediately made a call.

Before long, I heard a helicopter overhead.

The moment I saw it, my body finally gave out, and I lost consciousness.

I knew then that no one would ever take my place again.

My warning had no effect. Adrian still waited outside the fine art authentication firm every day. Whenever I happened to see him, I had my driver use the rear entrance. He began sending flowers and cakes.I threw every one of them away.Still, Adrian kept doing it each day. Then I went to a private club to discuss business with Oliver, the Romano heir. Adrian saw him open the car door for me.From that day on, he finally understood I was serious. He also came to wait outside less often.Even without Adrian's explanation, I'd known Julianne wanted to replace me from the moment I uncovered the truth.I simply hadn't wanted to believe it.She was the sister who always claimed she wanted to protect me.How could she have harbored such a vicious plan? When she wrote her own name on the marriage license application,I became even more certain. Two weeks later, I left on a business trip. It was snowing that day, and as my assistant and I used the front entrance, Adrian was nowher

I spent two weeks recovering in New York.During that time, the Romano family took excellent care of me. They placed me in their finest private estate and hired the best nutritionist they could find.I changed my phone and never contacted Adrian. For the first time in my life, I felt completely free.I heard Julianne's mental state had become unstable after I left, as though the situation had shaken her badly.I heard nothing more about Adrian.Once I'd fully recovered, I began working. The Romanos trusted me and gave me complete authority. They told me to do whatever I believed was necessary.Within six months of taking over the fine art authentication firm, I increased its revenue to more than five times its previous level.I quickly established my own standing in the industry.I also prepared to expand into other cities.Six months later, the family held a celebration for me. As I left the firm, I saw Adrian. He wore a black suit, and exhaustion showed across his face.

Julianne had never heard Adrian raise his voice at her like that. Her eyes immediately reddened. She went blank for a moment, and tears began spilling down her cheeks."Julianne, you really were the one those kidnappers wanted to kill.""I was, but Madeline was the one they actually took. She escaped, so she's the one they hate now," Julianne explained, avoiding his eyes.Adrian's hands trembled, and his lips turned pale."Why did you do this?!""What did I do?" Tears rolled down Julianne's face as though she'd suffered the greatest injustice imaginable.Adrian threw the evidence I'd collected at her feet."After Madeline escaped, those kidnappers kept looking for information about you. You wanted to take her identity so you could use her as a shield and keep yourself alive. Isn't that the truth?"Exposed, Julianne's shoulders shook."Answer me." Adrian's voice rose again. With red eyes, Julianne said, "Yes! I was scared. Even after every one of them died, I was still scared

I hadn't had time to take the luggage I'd packed.I'd only taken my identification and personal documents. My suitcase remained in the corner of my room, while barely any clothes were left in the closet. No one had noticed I truly intended to leave. With a heavy heart, Adrian searched the room and found the files from my investigation into the kidnappers.Inside one envelope was a group photograph of every person involved. I'd circled each face in red marker.Beside it, I'd written: No one missing. The second document contained the official death records I'd obtained. Every kidnapper had been accounted for. Not one was still alive. As Adrian read the reports, his nose stung and his knuckles slowly turned white. The last time he'd investigated the matter had been ten years ago. When he failed to get reliable information, he'd stopped following up. After that, he'd relied entirely on whatever Julianne told him.The final photograph was of me as a child.Back then, I had a smal

The explosion hadn't destroyed the country house completely.Adrian called me over and over during the drive, but I'd already blocked him, so none of his calls went through. When he arrived and saw the damage, his palms instantly began to sweat, disbelief written across his face.He called my name. "Madeline!"After two attempts, there was still no response. He went inside. Other than the ruined garden, the interior was undamaged.Julianne arrived and followed behind him.Together, they entered the bedroom. There was no sign anyone had ever lived there. It looked exactly as it had when the property was first purchased."Where did she go?" Julianne asked.Adrian grew even more anxious and immediately ordered his assistant to track my movements.Julianne kept insisting I'd probably been kidnapped.Adrian said nothing. Until he knew the truth, he didn't dare act recklessly. All he could do was pray over and over that I was safe.Twenty minutes later, his assistant recovered t

Julianne's sprained ankle didn't delay the wedding. In front of Adrian, my parents said I was as willful as I'd been as a child and needed to be taught a lesson. So none of them gave me another thought.Adrian and Julianne exchanged vows before the priest.Mother was moved to tears. They had almost forgotten it was supposed to be my wedding.Three days after the ceremony, I still hadn't called Adrian. They planned a honeymoon.Julianne suggested taking me along because they were traveling so far.Only then did they remember they'd left me outside the country house.Mother scoffed. "Why bring her? Have you forgotten she caused your injury? She's an ungrateful wretch. No matter how much you do for her, she'll never appreciate it!"Father added, "Julianne, you're simply too kind."Adrian, who had initially been worried about my safety, darkened at their words. He agreed. "Leave her at the house for now. When she realizes she was wrong, she'll call."Julianne said, "All right
