Chapter 1

Autor: Nameless
That night, I stayed at the amusement park until almost dawn.

I had just returned home and gotten into bed when my phone rang. I stared at the caller ID "Mila" without moving.

After hanging up on her three times, I finally picked up the fourth time she called.

Before I could even get a word in, Mila Parker yelled, "Jared Parker, why the hell are you acting up in the middle of the night? Leo won an award last night after working hard for 20 years. What's wrong with us celebrating with him?"

Her voice turned frosty. "Can't you just be a little more understanding? Do you really have to upset all of us during the holidays?"

Understanding.

It was that word again. Ever since the day I rejoined this family, it had always reminded me to yield, keep quiet, and smile.

I stared at the gray sky and finally spoke. "Mila, Happy New Year."

Mila paused. All the anger she'd come ready to unleash got stuck in her throat.

I didn't give her a chance to react and continued in that same flat, emotionless tone. "I didn't mean anything by it. I just think you guys are the ones who really look like a family."

With that, I hung up.

For a moment, there was only silence around me. My phone turned dark, reflecting my blank face.

I stood up and went over to the huge walk-in closet. Then, I pulled open the bottom drawer and took out the old canvas bag I'd brought with me from underneath a pile of fancy boxes. I unzipped it and started stuffing my old T-shirts, my sketchbook, and the mechanical pencil I'd been using for years into it.

Halfway through it, my phone rang again. This time, it wasn't Mila. It was my mom, Delilah Smith.

I didn't answer. I hit the button to reject the call and kept folding my old clothes one by one, putting them into the bag. There weren't many, and the bag was full in no time.

My phone rang once more. This time, it was my dad, Mitchell Parker.

I rejected his call too.

A moment later, my phone buzzed with a message. It was from him, and he was still using that commanding tone of the head of the family.

It read, "Leo feels so guilty. If you're done throwing a tantrum, come home now and apologize to him."

I didn't reply.

There was another important thing that I needed to do. I pulled out my desk drawer, where a black card lay quietly inside.

This was the money they gave me when I first returned to the family. They told me to buy whatever I wanted and not embarrass them.

I never spent it, though.

I took it out and placed it on the clean table. Then, I pulled out my phone and snapped a photo of it. I opened the dead-silent family group chat, where everyone only ever sent holiday greetings, and sent the photo.

I typed, "Thanks for taking care of me. I haven't spent any of this money. The password is Leo's birthday. From now on, I'll take care of myself."

I turned around, feeling completely calm. "I don't need you to make it up to me."I pointed at the boarding gate that was about to close. "I just want to live my own life."Mila rushed over and grabbed my arm forcefully. "No! You can't go! I won't let you leave!""Let go." My voice was cold and emotionless."No way!" She clamped onto me. "I've already sent Leo away. I…"This time, I yanked my hand away with a force hard enough to make Mila stumble. "Even if you get rid of Leo, someone like him will pop up again sooner or later."I looked her in the eye. "He's not the problem. What's problematic is your prejudice, your selfishness, and the choices you made."The announcement came over the speakers once more, urging me onward. With that, I looked away from Mila and walked straight toward the gate. My steps were unwavering, each one crushing the misery of the past beneath my feet."Jared!" she called after me, her voice growing fainter with every step I took.I entered the jet b

The little brother she'd looked down on for years was actually the innocent one she'd failed. How ironic.I slowly stood up and looked at the family I'd once tried so hard to fit into. Then, I looked at the family photo on the wall. In the photo, the three of them were gathered around Leo, smiling brightly.I let out a breath, as if trying to get rid of all the hurt and resentment I'd carried over the years. I looked at them. My voice was almost too calm. "All these years, I was an outsider."I blocked Mila. The confirmation on my screen said it all. I didn't hesitate. One tap, and I cut off all ties with her. Then, I blocked Delilah, Mitchell, and Leo too.My phone went silent. So did everything else. The airport was packed, so I found a quiet corner and sat down with my suitcase by my feet. There wasn't much in it, just a few clothes and the design sketches I'd managed to salvage.I hadn't taken anything from the Parker family. It felt like someone had pulled me out of a sw

Only Mitchell kept up his usual domineering act. "What the hell are you talking about? You're seriously losing it!"I smiled, not bothering to engage with him. Then, I took my time opening the envelope, took out the old, yellowed photo, and pushed it toward the center of the coffee table.I asked, "Do you guys know this woman?"The photo showed a woman gently holding a baby.Delilah's breath caught. Her lips trembled, but she couldn't get a word out. Mitchell's eyes widened, like he'd just been hit with something he wasn't prepared for."No, I don't know her." His voice sounded dry, and he couldn't bring himself to look at the photo again."Really?" I pulled the letter out too, unfolded it, and placed it beside the photo. "This letter has to be for you two, right? Dear Delilah, I secretly switched your son with mine…"Mila stepped forward and snatched up the letter, quickly scanning through it. Her expression went from confusion to shock to disbelief, until her face turned death

It felt like something had exploded inside my head. My mind went blank for a moment, and I could hear my heartbeat pounding like a drum.It was a deliberate switch!I tightened my grip on the letter. My fingertips dug into the paper until my knuckles turned white. Then, slowly, I loosened my grip."Are you okay?" The young man asked uneasily when he saw how pale I'd gone.I ignored him and kept staring at the letter. At the bottom was an address, along with a last name. It wasn't the Parker family or the Smith family, but a name that I'd never heard before. Then came a deion of the place, followed by one sentence. "They are way richer than the Parker family."My breathing quickened. It wasn't an accident. It was a scheme. That was how I ended up with the Parker family. They looked down on me, used me, and treated me like a stepping stone for Leo.For 20 years, I'd been an idiot, struggling and begging for their affection while living in their lies and their fake version of a f

Mila's voice was firm. "Jared, you'll regret this."I just kept flipping through the magazine.Regret? I'd felt that way a long time ago. I'd regretted trusting them for so long.Mila waited a few seconds for me to react. When I still didn't respond, she finally turned and strode out of the living room.I heard the front door slam shut, hard enough to make the windows rattle.I glanced at the black card on the coffee table, then went back to flipping through my magazine. My phone buzzed with a notification from my bank. A sizable bonus had just hit my account. I got way more than I expected from the exchange program's first payment.I stared at it, and a smile gradually appeared on my face. The money couldn't have come at a better time.Early the next morning, I went to the county clerk's office. It was time to find out what the Parker family was hiding.…When I got my acceptance letter for the overseas internship after the exchange program ended, I finally felt like I coul

Even though it was blurry, I could still recognize the person. It was the man Leo had hired to mess with my laptop. In the background, a black sedan was parked nearby, and its license plate was clearly visible. It belonged to Mila's private investigator. They'd seen everything.I put the document back on the coffee table and took a picture of the license plate with my phone.Even though there were things they didn't want me to know, I planned to find out for myself. My gut instinct told me that Mila's hesitation and Leo's obsession went beyond plain jealousy.…Three days later, Mila came to me. For the first time, there was a crack in her icy expression. She tossed a black card onto the table before me. Her words came out rough and stiff, like she was forcing herself to speak. "Come home. Stop embarrassing yourself out there. If you need anything, just tell me."I stared at the card and laughed. It was obviously expensive and had no spending limit. I usually had to think twi
