Chapter 2

Author: Moore
I nodded, then heard myself say it aloud.

"Do you want me to give up my room?" I asked him. "The one with the large terrace. It would be more comfortable for a pregnant woman."

The words left my mouth calmly, as if they belonged to someone else.

Garrick's expression darkened, and his tone sharpened. "You're really generous. You're even willing to give up your room."

I lowered my eyes and replied in the gentle voice I always used, "It's fine. I don't mind."

I would be leaving anyway. Everything here would belong to Lyralei sooner or later. Letting go ahead of time felt appropriate.

Something in him snapped.

"Fine," he said coldly. "If you want to give it up, then do it. Just don't regret it later."

He turned at once, his voice softening as he faced Lyralei. "You can move in today. Stay there until the birth. Don't worry about anything else."

Joy flared in Lyralei's eyes. She quickly hid it behind a display of concern.

"Is that really okay?" she asked sweetly. "It is Wena's room. What will she do if I take it?"

Garrick snorted. "She's generous. She can live anywhere. You should focus on yourself."

I had prepared myself to leave. I believed I was ready. Still, the indifference in his voice cut deeper than I expected.

For seven years after we formed our mate bond, Garrick indulged me in everything. He gave me the best of whatever he had. Even when bloodline rejection meant I could not conceive naturally, his affection never wavered.

At least, that was what I believed. Now all of that care flowed toward the pups who shared his blood.

I swallowed my tears and went upstairs. I intended to move my packed bag to another room and clear the space.

Behind me, Lyralei set the bowl down and rose slowly, one hand bracing her lower back. Her voice turned soft and clinging as she reached for Garrick. "Alpha, my waist hurts. Can you help me back to the room?"

From the second-floor corridor, I saw her lean into his chest, pliant and familiar, lifting her leg to hook it around his waist.

I could not keep watching. I fled back into my room as if escaping a fire.

By the time I shut the door, my face was already soaked. It took a long while to steady my breathing. When I finally picked up my bag and stepped into the hallway to change rooms, hurried footsteps thundered toward me.

The door slammed open.

Garrick rushed in, clutching a crumpled sheet of paper. It was my pregnancy report. His face lit with unrestrained joy. "Wena, you're pregnant?"

I had not expected him to find it. Before I could speak, he pulled me into his arms and held me so tightly that his entire body trembled.

"That's amazing," he said hoarsely. "I finally have a pup. Our pup."

Bitterness rose in my throat. This was the moment I had once dreamed of. Now, I touched my lower abdomen and forced myself to lie.

"I'm not pregnant," I said lightly. "That report isn't mine. Same name, same surname. You know I can't get pregnant. I probably just wanted to borrow some good luck."

His smile froze. The disappointment on his face was immediate and unmistakable.

"Besides, you've already had someone give birth for you. From now on, I won't have to suffer through bloodline fusion rituals anymore," I added, keeping my tone casual.

Garrick studied me. "Wena, are you really willing to accept Moonlet and Silvertail?"

The blood drained from my face at the sound of those two names.

Ayla "Moonlet" Whitefang.

Five years ago, when I had briefly been pregnant and learned the pup was a girl, that was the name I chose. I had whispered it to my abdomen and laced it with blessings from the Moon Goddess. I had even told Garrick that if we ever had a boy, we would name him Silvertail.

That pregnancy had not survived the bloodline rejection.

I had cried for an entire day and night. Garrick had stayed with me the whole time. We had buried the tiny body in the pack's cemetery, and I had carved the headstone myself.

Now he had given those names to the pups he had with another woman.

I could force myself to accept his betrayal. I had not known he would take the only thing I still held sacred, the name of the pup I had lost, and give it away as well.

Before I could speak, Alan stepped forward and met Garrick's gaze head-on."Garrick, for the seven years Rowena was your Luna, you kept her locked inside your territory. You caged her spirit, her preferences, and her ambitions. She gave all of it up for you. If you truly love her, then do not let her wither like a flower cut off from sunlight." His voice was steady, edged with steel. The color drained from Garrick's face. He knew how deeply I once loved my work. Because of his status, I had sacrificed far too much.I reached out and patted Alan's back, asking him to step away. Then I turned to Garrick and shook my head. "Garrick, I'm not going back with you. My work is here. My family is here.""Wena, I'm your family too," he said urgently.Once, I had told him he was the only family I had left in this world. Now, he finally understood that I no longer wanted him. From that day on, Garrick remained outside the research institute. Rain or shine, he refused to leave, and his prese

It was not until the patrol squad had completely withdrawn from pack territory that Helga arrived in a panic. "Garrick, have you lost your mind? We finally secured an heir, and you throw him away like that? Are you trying to anger me to death?"Her face burned red, and her chest rose and fell with each sharp breath. "Hurry and bring Silvertail back. I do not care about anything else. You must retrieve Snowclaw Pack's heir.""Mom," Garrick cut in, his voice abrupt as he stopped her mid-rant. "Do you know that Rowena is pregnant?"She froze. "You must be… What? Rowena is pregnant?"Delight bloomed across her face. "That is wonderful news. Where is she? Bring her back at once. Silvertail still needs to stay. What if Rowena gives birth to a female pup? I still want Silvertail as the Alpha heir.""We cannot find her," Garrick said, his voice rough. "Rowena is missing. Even with my authority, I cannot trace her. She does not want me anymore."Helga's expression hardened. "That woman is

The next morning, while Garrick remained in the conference room meeting with the patrol captains, Lyralei barged into the estate, oversized suitcases scraping across the floor behind her.She immediately began issuing orders to the maids as if she owned the place and had every decoration Rowena had personally chosen thrown out through the front doors.Lyralei thrust a bag into the housekeeper's hands. "These are the new decorations for the estate. Replace everything at once. Move faster, or I will replace all of you."The housekeeper did not accept the bag."I'm sorry, Ms. North," he said evenly. "We have received no orders from the Alpha. We are not authorized to make changes to the estate. Alpha Garrick has also not severed his mate bond with Luna Rowena. You are still not the Luna of Snowclaw Pack."Lyralei exploded."This is outrageous!" she screamed, jabbing a finger at him. "I'll call the Alpha right now and have you fired!"She spun around and froze.Garrick stood at the

After he unlocked the phone, Garrick noticed something that made his breath hitch. There were messages from Lyralei."How does she even have Wena's contact information?" he blurted.A chill crept up his spine as he opened the thread. All the timestamps came after Rowena had disappeared.Lyralei: [Rowena, you finally left?]Lyralei: [At least you know your place. A hen that can't lay eggs has been squatting in the Luna position for years. You should have handed over what never belonged to you long ago.]Lyralei: [Don't ever come back once you're gone. I'll give Gary plenty of pups. There won't be a place for you in the Snowclaw Pack anymore.]Garrick's eyes went bloodshot. His grip tightened until the phone creaked, as if it might shatter in his hand."What else did you find?" he asked suddenly. His voice sounded eerily calm. The Beta swallowed and pulled out his own device, then brought up the estate's surveillance footage. On the screen, Lyralei's face looked twisted and ugly

Garrick vented all his rage on Lyralei. He dragged her out of the estate and threw her down at the gates."This is my home with Wena," he said coldly. "If I ever see you again, I'll break your legs.""Gary!" Lyralei clutched her stomach and looked at him in disbelief. "I'm carrying your pup. How can you treat me like this?"Garrick did not look at her. He turned away, locked the gates, and left her by the roadside. Her sobs echoed as she cried until her voice gave out.Not long after, Helga rushed over, breathless and frantic. She hurried to help Lyralei to her feet, panic clear on her face."Lyra, why are you out here?" she cried. "Good heavens, how could Garrick throw you out like this? I'm going to settle this with him."She stormed into the estate and yanked Garrick up from the bed in Rowena's old room, where he lay curled in on himself."Garrick!" she shouted. "Lyralei is still carrying our pack's heir. How could you throw her out? What if something happened to her?"She d

Garrick finally grasped the truth. Rowena was really gone.Cold, sharp panic crept in. Where was he supposed to find her?His mind replayed their last phone call again and again. With each replay, his unease deepened and tightened its grip."No. That can't be right. She loves me too much. She would not leave me like this. She has to be bluffing, trying to scare me," he mumbled. "That has to be it."Garrick refused to accept that Rowena was truly gone. He convinced himself that she must have left something behind, some clue hidden in the house and waiting to be found. He went straight to the room where she used to stay. He opened the door. Inside, he found unfamiliar women's clothes and jewelry.Only then did the truth strike him. That room no longer belonged to Rowena. She had given it to Lyralei. Every trace of her presence had vanished. Even the photo from their mate bond ceremony, the one that once hung on the wall, was gone.Garrick's chest tightened. He summoned the houseke
