Chapter 2

Author: Giggle Lynn
During the thirteen-hour flight, I never slept.

All I could think about were the videos on Lance’s account.

Lance had been my roommate during my four years of university and my former best friend.

After his graduation, he vanished without a trace, and we lost contact with each other.

I never expected him to barge into my life again in such a mortifying way.

Once the plane landed, I headed straight to Saint Veronica’s Beach.

Lance had uploaded another video two hours ago.

[Last night, Jane said that she wants to visit Saint Veronica’s Beach, so we went together this morning!]

I immediately spotted Mandy through the crowd.

She had always found the idea of matching outfits childish, yet she was dressed in an outrageous outfit that matched Jane’s, her daughter.

Lance gave her the ice-cream he had partially eaten.

Mandy tilted her head away a bit and frowned.

I clenched my fists.

She hated sweet things the most. I would always remember this. Whenever I finished drinking a soda and wanted to kiss her, she would scowl and push me away without hesitation, claiming that the sweet smell would affect her thoughts.

Yet she only frowned and grumbled, “It’s too sweet.”

Even so, she still ducked her head down and ate the remaining ice-cream while Lance still held it.

Mandy had always kept to her boundaries, was calm, and restrained. Yet she could accommodate someone.

In my daze, I felt as if I was looking at someone else’s perfect life, and I was a shameful intruder.

“So, this is the special project you can’t walk away from, Mandy?” I asked from behind them.

They turned toward me, and their smiles froze.

Mandy instinctively took a step to the left to shield Lance and Jane behind her.

“Why are you here, Andrew?”

That instinctive act to protect them was an eyesore to me.

I sneered. “What’s wrong? Am I interrupting your holiday?”

Jane clutched Mandy’s hem tightly and asked with a choked-up voice, “Mommy, are you leaving?”

Mandy simply patted Jane’s head. “Don’t worry. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll stay here with you.”

Lance’s face turned pale, and his lips quivered. “Andrew, I can explain.”

I scoffed. “Explain what? How you spent your time and effort to seduce your friend’s girlfriend?”

Just like during his university days, he pursed his lips sadly, and his eyes grew dull.

Back then, when he lost his scholarship application form and the counsellor criticized him, I had to go back and forth to the office three times to help him get the process done.

Later on, when he could not pay rent, I had transferred all of my savings to him.

He had patted my shoulder and said that he did not know how to repay me.

After that, without a single word, he left the country.

I had been worried about him getting into some sort of difficulty and sent plenty of messages to him, but he never replied.

“Enough!” Mandy interrupted me. “Andrew, don’t run your mouth off. Lance never seduced me.”

I felt a sharp pain in my heart. “So, you two love each other? Am I the bad guy getting in the way of your perfect family?”

Lance hurriedly grabbed my hand. “That’s not it, Andrew. Listen to me.”

The sun shone on his hand, and his wristwatch stung my eyes.

I remembered the previous year’s Valentine’s Day.

When I was hanging Mandy’s jacket for her, I had touched a velvet box hidden deep in her jacket.

Very sneakily, I had opened it before putting it back quickly.

I had waited for the entire night, until the candlelight dinner I prepared meticulously turned cold. Even so, she never gave me the box.

Later on, when I asked about it in a roundabout fashion, she had answered coolly, “Oh. That one? That’s a custom product a client ordered.”

That sample was on Lance’s wrist.

I jerked my hand back and avoided his touch.

The force caused Lance to stagger, but before he could cry out in surprise, Mandy had already grabbed his arm and shielded him.

When she looked at me, her voice was full of reproach. “What on earth are you doing? Can’t you just talk properly? Lance is sickly and can’t handle you pushing him like this!”

So, by simply jerking my arm back, her heart was already aching for him so much?

What about me?

I stared at her. “Mandy, last year, I was in the ICU for two months because of an accident, and I nearly died. Didn’t you know that?”

Mandy frowned. “It’s already over, and you’re just fine, aren’t you?”

Lance suddenly fell silent. All I could hear was his labored breathing. “Andrew, since when have you become like this?” Lance complained with a hint of reproach. “You’ve dated each other for seven years! I swear that I really wasn’t thinking of destroying your relationship. I just wanted Jane to have a bit of her mother’s love. “Is that so wrong?”Finally, I was unable to hold back and laughed. Even at that point, he still wanted to cling onto that broken paragon of virtue. “Lance, stop putting on this pity play. Do you really think I don’t know what you’re planning?”I rapped my knuckles against the table and attacked him verbally. “If you really don’t have any feelings for Mandy, why upload those videos on your social media account every day in July and August? You even gave them those ambiguous captions.“Can you really tell me that you haven’t been hoping that I would see it one day, then be unable to cope with the shock and break up with Mandy so that you could be with he

Samantha’s eyes turned as cold as ice. “Mandy York, are you sick in the head? You’re trying to trick the man I love to go back to you with some cheap ring you bought from who knows where?”She grabbed my left hand and brought it to Mandy’s eyes. “Open your eyes wide and take a good look.”On my ring finger was a beautiful diamond ring. Samantha then brought her other hand up and put it right next to mine to flash her own ring. “I bought these matching rings in an auction for two hundred million dollars. Andrew should only have the best things in the world. “Besides, a woman’s loyalty is her best wedding gift. As for a cheater like you…”Samantha’s lips curled into a wicked grin as she said, “You’re not even worthy of kissing his shoes.”Mandy trembled, and all her strength left her body. Suddenly, she whipped her head up and glared at me with bloodshot eyes. “Andrew, we were together for seven years! You can’t have possibly gotten over me so completely!“Did she force you to

  • No Birds Returning In Summer   Chapter 7

(1st POV)The preparations for the engagement banquet were so complicated that it was frankly stupid. Samantha, that flashy woman, wanted to attract the attention of everyone in the capital to our engagement party. Elizabeth, Samantha’s mother, was even more outrageous. She stuffed the property deeds of several penthouses belonging to luxury apartments under the Jackson family’s name and a thick stack of share transfer agreements into my hands. “Andrew, I’ve been waiting for this for more than twenty years.” Elizabeth held my hand, and she was smiling so much that her crow’s feet showed up. “If Samantha bullies you, chase her out. Everything in the Jackson family belongs to you.”As I stared at the thick and heavy stack of papers, my nose stung. Back then, I took care of Zoey and got dark eye circles for working overnight to take care of her in the hospital, but all I got was her enjoying my care for her and her helping Mandy betray me. But I did not even need to do anythin

(3rd POV)At the same time, Mandy sat in the lawn of the house while she helped Jane build a complicated doll house, despite her mind wandering. Suddenly, her phone vibrated on the table. Leah, Mandy’s best friend in Sommerset, sent a string of exclamation marks, along with a link to a news article. [Mandy, what’s going on? I never heard about you breaking up. Why is your boyfriend getting engaged with the Jackson heiress?!]Mandy frowned and found it hilarious. Andrew was a man who did not dare to even look at women while he walked on the streets. How could he do something so outrageous? He always just swallowed his grievances. Once these two months were over, she would go back, bring him some good food and give him some presents. After that, he would still cook for her and tell her gently to eat. Feeling annoyed, she clicked the link. But the moment she saw the high-resolution photo, Mandy’s breathing froze. The red roses that filled every inch of the venue, the ey

The moment I stepped on the streets of Sommerset again, a red racecar came to a slow stop beside me. When the windows wound down, the woman inside removed her sunglasses and plopped an elbow casually on the edge of the window before cocking an eyebrow at me. “Did you come to welcome me back to the country, Mr. Fiance?”I was stunned. The youthful softness in my memories was gone, and her features had become more pronounced. But when she smiled, the slight jut of her left canine tooth was the same as when she was just a little girl. “Samantha Jackson?”She opened the door and came to stand in front of me. “How could you, Andrew? My mother begged for the arranged marriage so many times, and you said no without even seeing me?”I was still dumbfounded. Back then, all of my attention had been on Mandy, and I thought that my parents were being ridiculous for trying to get me into an arranged marriage, so I had rejected it without even thinking about it. The sight of my flabberg

As I watched how self-righteously Mandy was acting, I was finally unable to control myself and laughed. But as if there was glass stuck in my throat, it hurt so much that I started crying. “You kept this from me for five whole years and played me like an idiot. Am I in the wrong over the last five years?”Lance’s already pale face turned red as he threw himself at my feet. “Andrew, I’m the one in the wrong. I swear that I was never thinking about replacing you. “But please, don’t take away Jane’s right to see her mother for two months every year. She’s innocent.”That again. The child was innocent. So, was I simply supposed to bear the consequences?Suddenly, I heard hurried footsteps from above. “Don’t bully my daddy!” Jane rushed down and crashed into my legs. She clenched her fists and kept punching me. “You’re bad! Horrible! Get out! Don’t bully my daddy!”She then lunged at me to bite the back of my hand. Instinctively, I brought my hand up to block her flailing li
