Chapter 3

Author: Giggle Lynn
In an instant, I felt all my strength drain.

So, as long as I survived, all my hardships could be brushed off.

All my anger and sadness turned into a lump inside my throat.

I turned to leave, but Mandy caught up to me and grabbed my wrist. “Where are you going? You’re hopeless with directions, and we’re not back in Sommerset. What if you lose your way?”

I was stuffed into the back seat of the car.

Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of a white villa.

In the garden were hydrangeas and lemon trees. Under the porch were wind chimes that let out pleasant sounds as they knocked into each other.

I stood at the door and felt dumbfounded.

The arched door at the entrance, the tall floor-to-door windows in the living room, the semi-open study to the right, and even the embedded shelf beside the fireplace was the same as my designs.

Two years ago, I had excitedly brought Mandy to visit a new housing development, and I had said, “Let’s buy it so that it can become our new home.”

Back then, I pulled all-nighters and looked through all sorts of documents. I modified the blueprint repeatedly so that I could plan every part of our future home.

The blueprint that I had drawn so carefully, revised so many times, and treated like treasure had become another man’s home.

Just then, I heard a familiar voice from the kitchen. “Why are you back so early today? Lance, what do you want to eat? I’ll make it for you. The stew is already ready. Is Jane hungry…”

I turned around to look and saw that it was Zoey, Mandy’s mother.

Zoey had severe high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. She had poor health.

She was frequently hospitalized over the years, and I had to find my friends for help, pull strings, and get specialists to treat her. I also stayed by her bed to tend to her every need.

Zoey had always said that I was like her son, and I believed her. What a joke.

Out of guilt, Zoey averted her eyes and did not dare meet my gaze. “Jane, come. Let’s go up and play with your building blocks.”

In an instant, only the three of us were left behind in the spacious living room.

Mandy and Lance sat on the couch together, while I sat across from them.

They made the distinction far too clear. I was the unwelcomed outsider.

Mandy broke the silence. “Since you now know this, there’s no need for me to hide it anymore. During the graduation party of our senior year, everyone had too much to drink. Lance and I… both didn’t have our full faculties.

“When we woke up the next day, it had already happened.”

Lance continued meekly, “Andrew, I know that I have no right to see you. After that happened, I bought a plane to fly out of the country immediately.

“But Mandy got pregnant. The doctor said that she’s weak. If she aborted the baby, she might not be able to become a mother again.”

In resignation, Mandy said, “I know just how much you like children, Andrew, and I won’t rob myself of the right to become a mother. That’s why I disappeared for an entire year in the name of participating in a fully confidential R&D project.

“After Jane was born, Lance took care of her alone abroad.”

Suddenly, Lance looked at me with panic in his eyes. “Andrew, I really wasn’t trying to ruin your relationship. But when Jane was one, she got acute pneumonia and kept asking for Mandy. I was too scared. That’s why I called her.”

Mandy sighed. “Her parents may have sinned, but Jane can’t be faulted for that. She needs her mother. That’s why I spend two months every year to keep her company and carry out my responsibilities as a mother.”

She then looked at me squarely in the eyes. “Aside from those two months, I spend the rest of the ten months with you. Shouldn’t you already be satisfied with it?

“I need to carry out my duties as your girlfriend with you, but I also need to carry out my duties with Jane. You can’t tell me there’s anything wrong with that.”

Lance suddenly fell silent. All I could hear was his labored breathing. “Andrew, since when have you become like this?” Lance complained with a hint of reproach. “You’ve dated each other for seven years! I swear that I really wasn’t thinking of destroying your relationship. I just wanted Jane to have a bit of her mother’s love. “Is that so wrong?”Finally, I was unable to hold back and laughed. Even at that point, he still wanted to cling onto that broken paragon of virtue. “Lance, stop putting on this pity play. Do you really think I don’t know what you’re planning?”I rapped my knuckles against the table and attacked him verbally. “If you really don’t have any feelings for Mandy, why upload those videos on your social media account every day in July and August? You even gave them those ambiguous captions.“Can you really tell me that you haven’t been hoping that I would see it one day, then be unable to cope with the shock and break up with Mandy so that you could be with he

Samantha’s eyes turned as cold as ice. “Mandy York, are you sick in the head? You’re trying to trick the man I love to go back to you with some cheap ring you bought from who knows where?”She grabbed my left hand and brought it to Mandy’s eyes. “Open your eyes wide and take a good look.”On my ring finger was a beautiful diamond ring. Samantha then brought her other hand up and put it right next to mine to flash her own ring. “I bought these matching rings in an auction for two hundred million dollars. Andrew should only have the best things in the world. “Besides, a woman’s loyalty is her best wedding gift. As for a cheater like you…”Samantha’s lips curled into a wicked grin as she said, “You’re not even worthy of kissing his shoes.”Mandy trembled, and all her strength left her body. Suddenly, she whipped her head up and glared at me with bloodshot eyes. “Andrew, we were together for seven years! You can’t have possibly gotten over me so completely!“Did she force you to

  • No Birds Returning In Summer   Chapter 7

(1st POV)The preparations for the engagement banquet were so complicated that it was frankly stupid. Samantha, that flashy woman, wanted to attract the attention of everyone in the capital to our engagement party. Elizabeth, Samantha’s mother, was even more outrageous. She stuffed the property deeds of several penthouses belonging to luxury apartments under the Jackson family’s name and a thick stack of share transfer agreements into my hands. “Andrew, I’ve been waiting for this for more than twenty years.” Elizabeth held my hand, and she was smiling so much that her crow’s feet showed up. “If Samantha bullies you, chase her out. Everything in the Jackson family belongs to you.”As I stared at the thick and heavy stack of papers, my nose stung. Back then, I took care of Zoey and got dark eye circles for working overnight to take care of her in the hospital, but all I got was her enjoying my care for her and her helping Mandy betray me. But I did not even need to do anythin

  • No Birds Returning In Summer   Chapter 6

(3rd POV)At the same time, Mandy sat in the lawn of the house while she helped Jane build a complicated doll house, despite her mind wandering. Suddenly, her phone vibrated on the table. Leah, Mandy’s best friend in Sommerset, sent a string of exclamation marks, along with a link to a news article. [Mandy, what’s going on? I never heard about you breaking up. Why is your boyfriend getting engaged with the Jackson heiress?!]Mandy frowned and found it hilarious. Andrew was a man who did not dare to even look at women while he walked on the streets. How could he do something so outrageous? He always just swallowed his grievances. Once these two months were over, she would go back, bring him some good food and give him some presents. After that, he would still cook for her and tell her gently to eat. Feeling annoyed, she clicked the link. But the moment she saw the high-resolution photo, Mandy’s breathing froze. The red roses that filled every inch of the venue, the ey

The moment I stepped on the streets of Sommerset again, a red racecar came to a slow stop beside me. When the windows wound down, the woman inside removed her sunglasses and plopped an elbow casually on the edge of the window before cocking an eyebrow at me. “Did you come to welcome me back to the country, Mr. Fiance?”I was stunned. The youthful softness in my memories was gone, and her features had become more pronounced. But when she smiled, the slight jut of her left canine tooth was the same as when she was just a little girl. “Samantha Jackson?”She opened the door and came to stand in front of me. “How could you, Andrew? My mother begged for the arranged marriage so many times, and you said no without even seeing me?”I was still dumbfounded. Back then, all of my attention had been on Mandy, and I thought that my parents were being ridiculous for trying to get me into an arranged marriage, so I had rejected it without even thinking about it. The sight of my flabberg

  • No Birds Returning In Summer   Chapter 4

As I watched how self-righteously Mandy was acting, I was finally unable to control myself and laughed. But as if there was glass stuck in my throat, it hurt so much that I started crying. “You kept this from me for five whole years and played me like an idiot. Am I in the wrong over the last five years?”Lance’s already pale face turned red as he threw himself at my feet. “Andrew, I’m the one in the wrong. I swear that I was never thinking about replacing you. “But please, don’t take away Jane’s right to see her mother for two months every year. She’s innocent.”That again. The child was innocent. So, was I simply supposed to bear the consequences?Suddenly, I heard hurried footsteps from above. “Don’t bully my daddy!” Jane rushed down and crashed into my legs. She clenched her fists and kept punching me. “You’re bad! Horrible! Get out! Don’t bully my daddy!”She then lunged at me to bite the back of my hand. Instinctively, I brought my hand up to block her flailing li
