Chapter 4

Author: Severed Thoughts
Less than half an hour after the call ended, the sound of snapping branches came from the forest behind me.

Alexander had found me.

Gone was the rage he'd shown back at the residence. In its place was a gentle, subdued look laced with apology that I knew all too well.

Alexander stepped up behind me, reaching out to pull me into his arms, but I sidestepped him and avoided it.

"Ivy." His voice was low behind me. "I lost control with the slap earlier. Sophia did speak out of line, but you shouldn't have hit her in front of a pup."

I didn't turn around, finding everything ridiculous.

Alexander hadn't come because he regretted it or because he cared about me. He came because he needed me.

Without the recognition of the White Wolf royalty's bloodline or my appearance as a Luna with royal backing, no successor could ever gain the approval of the Council of Elders or the entire werewolf kingdom.

Alexander thought I was still throwing a tantrum out of jealousy like other she-wolves.

I turned to face him. For once, I didn't argue.

I calmly took out a folded piece of parchment I had prepared earlier and held it out to Alexander. "I know. I won't miss tomorrow."

My voice was devoid of any emotions. "This is the consent form for an advanced combat training program I found for Lucas. He'll be the successor after tomorrow, so I want him to have the best training. As Alpha, you should sign it."

Alexander visibly relaxed. A flicker of satisfaction crossed his eyes, thinking I had given in for the betterment of the pack.

He didn't even look at the parchment, nor did he bother reading the terms written in the old wolf tongue. He bit his finger and pressed his bloody fingerprint onto it.

Alexander had no idea that wasn't any kind of program consent form but a blood-bound unilateral declaration to sever our mate bond.

The Greystone pack's successor ceremony was held in full grandeur at the central square at dawn the next day.

Dressed in lavish ceremonial robes, Alexander sat high on the main seat with Lucas beside him. Below them, the Council of Elders and thousands of pack members stood in solemn silence.

They were all waiting for me—the Luna—to appear. More than that, they were waiting for the White Wolf royalty's envoy to witness the ceremony.

Time ticked by, yet my seat remained empty.

Alexander's expression grew increasingly anxious and dark. He kept signaling to his guards, urging them to hurry me along.

Just then, a sharp wolf's howl rang out from the edge of the square. The crowd parted instantly, then dropped to one knee in shock.

The one who had arrived was no mere envoy, but the ruler of the entire werewolf kingdom, the White Wolf Alpha King himself.

Alexander and the elders hurried down from the platform, bowing deeply. "Your Majesty."

"At ease." Father's voice carried across the square, steady and commanding.

Then, he stepped aside, revealing the figure behind him. A collective gasp swept through the crowd.

Alexander's eyes widened as his gaze locked onto me.

I showed up in full ceremonial dress, but what I wore was not the dark-patterned Luna gown of the Greystone pack. Instead, I wore a robe of brilliant silver-white, the attire of a princess of the White Wolf royalty.

I slowly walked up the stone platform, not even sparing Alexander a glance as I stopped.

His expression was tight. "What are you doing, Ivy?"

I looked up, my voice ringing clear across the entire square as I said, "I refuse to recognize Lucas Gowling as the successor of the Graystone pack."

The exile order to the northern salt plains was carried out two weeks later.Alexander was marched through the central square in chains on the day he left. Heavy black iron shackles weighed him down, and he wore nothing but a plain gray robe.No one came to see him off, and no one spoke for him.The once untouchable Alpha of the Graystone pack was now the object of spectacle for the werewolves he had once looked down on as he descended from his pedestal. When Alexander passed the platform, he looked up and saw me.Dressed in a silver-white royal robe, I stood before the stone seat, listening as the elders reported on the latest border supply movements. He looked at me for a long time, to the point the guards grew impatient and urged him forward.Eventually, Alexander called out to me with a hoarse voice, "Ivy."I looked down at him, not an ounce of emotions left in my gaze. It was as if I were merely looking at an ordinary criminal.Clearly, Alexander had realized that. And i

I didn't have to go, but I went anyway. That was because I knew Alexander wouldn't last much longer. For an Alpha who had relied heavily on the white wolf's blessing to hold his power together, the backlash from breaking a mate bond would hit far harder than it would for an ordinary wolf.Sure enough, when I pushed the door open, Alexander was sitting on the cold stone bed. Every breath he took was strained and uneven. He'd lost weight, and the veins in his wrists stood out sharply. Gone was his usual suffocating presence."You came." Alexander looked up, his eyes bloodshot.I stayed by the door, not planning to step inside. "Say what you need to say."Alexander stared at me for a long time. Then, his voice dropped into a quiet plea. "I'm begging you. Please don't let them exile me. You know what the northern salt plains are like. It's no different from a death sentence if I go there in my current condition."I looked down at his hand gripping the hem of my dress, my gaze turnin

Early the next dawn, the public trial began ahead of schedule.Nearly everyone in the Graystone pack with the right to attend was there. Even the guards from the border watchtowers had been recalled.Sophia's hair was disheveled when she was brought in, her wrist bound in restraining silver. Tears spilled from her eyes the moment she saw Alexander. "Save me, Alexander!"He instinctively took a step forward but froze when his gaze met mine.Alexander's hesitation made Sophia snap. The pleading in her eyes immediately turned venomous."What are you looking at?" With reddening eyes, she suddenly shrieked, "You're regretting it now? You were the one who switched the pups and ordered for her to be drugged! You said as long as Ivy's senses were dulled, she'd never find out the truth!"The entire square fell into dead silence.Alexander's face darkened. "Shut up!""Why should I?" As if bordering on hysterical, Sophia laughed while tears streamed down her face. "Wasn't it you who said

The once untouchable Alpha of the Graystone pack now looked like a hollowed-out beast, barely staying on his feet."Leave." Father's royal guard blocked him coldly."I just need a word with Ivy." Alexander's voice was hoarse when he spoke. "Just a quick word."I hadn't planned to see him. But I wanted to see how he'd react now that he knew the mate bond was gone. So, I stepped out of the tent.Something akin to pitiful hope lit up in Alexander's eyes the moment he saw me."Ivy." He stepped forward, then seemed to remember himself and stopped short. "That blood-bound contract last night… You did that on purpose, didn't you?""I did," I replied without hesitation.Alexander's throat worked hard as he swallowed."Take it back," he said. "The trial, the testimonies, and the royal inquiry—I'll accept all of it. You can strip me of my Alpha title, too. But not the mate bond." I almost laughed. "Why not?""Because we're mates." Alexander stared at me, his voice growing urgent. "Th

I lifted my hand, and a royal guard immediately stepped forward with another tray. On it were two testimonies, an unsealed vial of medicine, and years of pharmacy records from the residence."These are the confessions written by the midwife and the maid last night." I looked out over the crowd, speaking loud and clear."Alexander ordered them to lace my food with wolfsbane over the years, all to suppress my bloodline instincts. It was also them who helped him cover up the truth of the switch on the night I gave birth," I continued. The head of the Council of Elders strode forward, personally flipping through the testimonies. The faster he read, the darker his expression turned."Alexander." He looked up, his voice trembling. "Are all of these… true?"Alexander stared at me. Real panic finally surfaced in his eyes for once."We can discuss this in private, Ivy." He lowered his voice, still trying to preserve what little dignity he had left. "You shouldn't have escalated it this fa

An uproar broke across the square.Alexander's voice was sharp with anger. "Do you have any idea what you're saying?""I do." I met his gaze and continued, "Because he's not my pup. My real pup died nine years ago."Lucas went pale, instinctively shrinking back behind Alexander.Sophia reacted first, stepping forward as tears sprung out instantly. "Alpha Alexander, Luna Ivy hasn't been stable since she gave birth. Over the years, she's been claiming that the pup isn't hers. Please don't blame her. She's just been too fixated on the prophecy—""Enough," Father spoke in a soft voice, yet it silenced the entire square in an instant. Then, a royal guard stepped forward, presenting a tray with the old, bloodstained scrap of swaddling cloth on it.Father looked at Alexander, his voice cold. "My daughter found this among her old belongings. Last night, the royal traced the bloodline through the lingering scent. "The result shows that this cloth carries the scent of her true pup. That
