We walked for a long time, and I didn’t immediately understand what had been irritating me for the past couple of hours. But when I listened to myself, I realized.

Nufira was walking nearby and constantly getting on my nerves. No, she wasn’t chatting—but… she was making other infuriating sounds. She’d squeak at the slightest movement ahead, scream when she saw some local creature, moan from exhaustion, sigh heavily, and so on. AND ALL THE TIME.

It started to drive me absolutely insane, especially since she kept ending up right next to me—and sometimes even grabbed my sleeve when she spotted some awkward little animals.

She liked Kays, and it was obvious even to the blind, but that arrangement didn’t suit me at all, so I switched to complete and total ignoring.

When we finally reached the city of the Shinires, I let out a small breath of relief—there was only one obstacle left to overcome on our path for today.

What a surprise it was when I discovered that my influence had no effect on

“Forgive me, Your Majesty,” the servant finally recovers his voice. “I was likely coming to you about that very matter. What are your orders regarding the girls?”“I’ll allocate money from the treasury, apologize, and let them decide for themselves what they want to do with their lives.”“All of them?” The old man’s eyes widen, and a vague suspicion stirs within me. “Nearly a hundred girls have come to the palace. As I recall, they were candidates from previous years, and they’re all demanding an audience with you.”“In w—” I break off as realization hits me. My eyes widen in sudden understanding, and I bolt from my chamber down to the lower floor. But the anticipation and joy quickly turn to disappointment when I burst into the hidden room and, instead of my revived relatives, find the same accursed monolith with their tortured forms frozen within it.I collapse to my knees, covering my face with my hands, devastated. I don’t understand—why didn’t it work?“Kays,” I feel a gentle tou

  • No Escape From Fate    135 Almost Made It

I wake up to warm rays of sunlight shining straight into my face. That’s rather strange, since I usually prefer near-constant twilight in my room.I open my eyes, and the first thing I notice is that my bed is empty. It couldn’t all have been a dream, could it?! I shift my gaze and see the motionless silhouette of my beloved, standing by the window with her back to me, bathed in sunlight.Something snaps inside me, and panic surges in all its force. No, no, no! Not her! It had to work!I spring out of bed and, already on the verge of hysteria, wrap my arms around my beloved’s figure. But she isn’t cold porcelain—she’s warm and soft, very much alive.“What’s wrong with you?” my prepedollie asks in surprise, turning around in my arms and giving me a charming, tender smile. If only she knew how my heart just unclenched.“I got scared,” I admit, hugging my woman tighter, breathing in her scent and savoring her warmth, repeating to myself, Alive. She’s alive. She’s wearing only one of my s

“Don’t be angry with me, my king,” I felt her gentle touch on my face, followed by the soft press of her lips to mine. “I know everything,” the prepedollie sobbed. “I love you, Kays. I know it’s you—I just feel it with my soul,” my beloved whispered against my lips through tears and pain, and I froze, staring at her.“How?..” was all I could force out, disbelieving.“I love you in any form and accept you as you are—whether you are Karadeylis or Kays. Please, don’t turn away from me,” my girl pressed herself closer.Tears streamed down her wet cheeks, just as they did down mine. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and only held my beloved tighter, kissing her deeply.I feel a pleasant warmth and a tingling spreading through my body, especially in my chest. It fills every cell of me, bringing a strange sense of relief.I open my eyes and realize that I am myself again. Iza is looking at me with amazement and undisguised joy. And I can’t stop rejoicing either, gazing with love at the m

“And since you’ve already made your choice, why delay our wonderful moment?” I looked at Iza coldly as I advanced on her. “We’ll begin right now.”For a second, I noticed fear in her eyes—but it quickly gave way to resolve.“Alright,” the wretch swallowed and agreed quietly, starting to unbutton her blouse with trembling hands. This is all so wrong. But furious demons were already ruling me, and I couldn’t stop.“You say you love me. You say you want to be with me… Then look at me and enjoy it,” I stepped closer, tearing my own clothes off in sharp, impatient movements.I didn’t hide anything—not the black stains where my karpits should be, nor the other obvious deformities that had driven more than one girl to flee my bedroom, even after they had hastily agreed.Let her look. She chose money—so she has to earn it. I had no intention of being gentle, though the very thought of being rough with her stabbed mercilessly at my chest.By the time I reached her, I was already down to my und

She entered and slowly looked around my chambers. Suddenly turning, she caught me red-handed—brazenly admiring her.“You didn’t come here just to look at my room, did you?” I said with a bitter smirk. I was genuinely surprised and had no idea why she needed me.“No,” the prepedollie lowered her eyes, nervously tugging at the edge of her blouse. “Something happened yesterday at Ogis and Vasmiya’s wedding… I thought about it for a long time, and I want to give my final answer to your question.”Oh. Something happened.Well then—this would be the right decision. I’d give you the world, and you would live.“Iza, do you want me to let you go? This is your last chance,” I asked, trying to hide my relief and joy—though I was still tense.“No,” the prepedollie stunned me, looking straight into my eyes. “I want to be with you,” she confessed in a trembling voice, leaving me utterly confused.“With me?” my eyes nearly popped out of my head at that statement.“Yes. With you, Karadeylis, my king.

I didn’t understand Iza’s reaction. I could clearly see that Kays interested her more than enough—she melted in my hands, and the tremor with which she responded to my kisses and touches… And yet, for some reason, she denied it and fought herself. Perhaps the girl was in shock and simply couldn’t process what she had heard right away. Most likely, she needed some time—to think everything through and come to terms with the situation. But be that as it may, it upset me greatly, irritated me, and knocked me completely off balance. Anxious thoughts began to press down on me with suffocating force. And once again—a whole day with the candidates, in whom I no longer saw any meaning. Everything had become colorless and insignificant, carried out purely by inertia.Sitting at dinner with Madina on the terrace overlooking the evening city, I couldn’t focus on anything at all—not on the girl sitting opposite me, not on the conversation, not on the food—on nothing except those bottomless blue ey
