Chapter 1

I was carrying two cups of coffee to the lab.

The door was cracked open. I heard Mason's hushed voice.

"Julian, does Vesper know you secretly filed the transfer request?"

I stopped dead.

"She'll understand," Julian said, his tone casual. "We're fated mates. We don't need to discuss it."

The heat from the coffee burned my fingers.

Mason sighed. "But she got the Chief Healer offer from Silver Crest. Wasn't that the whole point of leaving home for Neutral Territory? To go back and serve our pack?"

"Plans change," Julian answered dismissively. "Elodie's wolf is damaged. She needs me. Vesper will understand what's important."

My chest tightened. The mate bond ached.

"You're sure she'll agree to go to Crimson Peak?"

Julian laughed. "She wouldn't dare disagree. Ten years with my mark on her, her wolf is bound to mine. Besides, Vesper's the reasonable one. She never makes a fuss."

Reasonable.

The word stabbed me like a knife.

"Julian, you still have feelings for Elodie, don't you?" Mason asked the one question I was terrified to hear.

Silence.

Then the scrape of a chair on the floor.

"Vesper is the perfect mate," Julian finally said. "Professional, capable, independent. But with Elodie… that feeling of being needed… you get it, right?"

The flick of a lighter.

Julian took a long drag from his cigarette. "A Beta needs to be needed. Vesper's too strong. She doesn't need me. But Elodie… she makes me feel important."

My hands started to shake. My wolf let out a pained, disbelieving whine.

"But this breaks your vows," Mason said softly. "Did you forget what you swore back in Silver Crest?"

Julian scoffed. "We were kids. Mason, a Beta warrior deserves to be a little greedy. Vesper only cares about her research. I'll take care of Elodie. Everyone gets what they need."

Everyone gets what they need.

"What kind of warrior can't even protect the person right next to him?" Julian's voice was full of self-righteousness. "I can't let Elodie get hurt again."

Mason seemed about to argue, but Julian cut him off.

"Don't worry. Vesper will follow me. She has no other choice."

I backed away slowly, carefully.

The hallway was silent, except for the thunder of my own heart.

Back at our apartment, I set the coffees down.

My hands were still trembling.

A photo hung on the wall. Us, five years ago, at the Pack Chief Medical Summit. The day Julian gave the keynote speech.

I remember him on that stage, his eyes shining with conviction.

The last slide of his presentation read: "It is the mission of our generation to bring advanced medicine back to Silver Crest."

I was so moved.

That idealistic Beta was the man I'd pledged my life to.

I thought we shared the same dream.

I thought we would go home together, serve our pack together.

How naive I was.

My phone buzzed. A text from Julian. "Not coming home for dinner. Elodie's having a rough day, I need to stay with her."

I stared at the message and wanted to laugh.

How many times had I gotten a text like this in the last six months?

Today Elodie has a headache. Tomorrow she has insomnia. The next day her wolf is restless.

And me? The "reasonable" mate? I was just supposed to wait quietly.

Because I "never make trouble for him."

Because I have "no other choice."

I went to the window and watched the sunset.

The mate mark on my neck throbbed, a constant reminder of ten years of compromise.

Julian’s words echoed in my head.

"She wouldn't dare disagree."

"Vesper will follow me. She has no other choice."

"A Beta warrior deserves to be a little greedy."

In his eyes, I wasn't his partner. I was his property. An accessory he was sure would never leave his side.

My phone pinged again. A notification for Elodie's social media.

She'd posted a picture of her and Julian, smiling sweetly.

The caption: "So thankful for someone who understands my weakness."

I looked at the photo, and the last shred of warmth in my heart died.

He never wanted to go back to Silver Crest.

He just wanted to be wherever Elodie was.

In the third month, Julian called again. He sounded exhausted."Vesper, I wanted to come see you, but Elodie's wolf... it's gotten worse." His voice was laced with resignation. "She's been hospitalized. Her wolf is unstable, turning on itself. The healers say any shock could push her over the edge."I was in the lab, mixing a serum sample. The vial glowed silver under the light."Mm," I replied flatly. He seemed to be waiting for more, but I said nothing."Vesper... are you okay?" he asked cautiously."Fine.""I mean... do you miss me?"I stared at the liquid in the vial, feeling nothing."No."Dead silence on the line. After a long moment, he finally spoke, his voice hoarse. "I see."In the fourth month, a courier delivered a package. The 'Mate-Bond Severance Agreement,' signed by Julian. There was also a long letter."Vesper, I admit I have feelings for Elodie, and I admit I hurt you. I'll never forget everything you did for me over the years. I'm leaving you most of my assets as com

Julian's face fell instantly. His lips pressed into a thin line, his eyes darting away. He couldn't say a word."What's wrong? Can't answer?" I pressed. "Weren't you just swearing I was the only one in your heart?""I... I..." he stammered. "Vesper, you know... I've set everything up in Crimson Peak, and Elodie... she...""She can't live without you, right?" I sneered. "Julian, do you remember five years ago? When Elodie was trying to get that exchange spot at St. Rose Medical Academy? Did she give up that chance for you?"His face went even whiter."She knew it was my dream, but she didn't hesitate for a second," my voice was sharp as a blade. "And you? You lied to me, made me give up my chance to go abroad, all to make her dream come true.""That's... that's different..." he trembled."How is it different?" I stared him down. "Now I'm asking you to stay in Silver Crest. Why can't you do it?"He just gaped at me, speechless."She won't sacrifice her comfortable life for you. You won't

The moment I stepped out of the Silver Crest airport, I saw them. A welcoming party. The Silver Crest Head Healing Center sigil shone in the sun.Three senior healers in white coats, genuine smiles on their faces."Dr. Vesper, welcome home," the lead healer said, shaking my hand. "We've all been waiting for you."My eyes stung.Ten years. Finally, someone was welcoming me home for me. Not as someone's mate, but for my own achievements. The convoy took me straight to the healing center. As I walked into the building, I saw the plaque on the door: Vesper Sterling Laboratory. My own lab. After ten years adrift, I was finally home. Truly home. The next day, I threw myself into developing a Silver-Poison Antidote. It was the biggest threat Silver Crest faced. Rival packs often used silver weapons on our patrols, and a normal wolf's recovery from silver poisoning was slow.If I could create an effective serum, it would be a game-changer for our pack's defense.I led a team of twelve, working

Julian was speechless. All I could hear was his ragged breathing and Elodie sobbing in the background."Did you ever ask me what I wanted?" My voice was laced with ice. "Julian, did you ever ask if I wanted to give up my position as Head Healer at Silver Crest to be your cook?""I... I..." He stammered, unable to form a word."Did you ask if I wanted to leave my homeland and start over in a strange territory?" My tone grew colder. "Or am I just some possession to you? Something without a mind of its own?""Vesper, let me explain...""Don't bother explaining," I cut him off. "My mind is made up. I'm staying in Silver Crest. For good.""What?!""Check your email." I started toward the airport cafe. "I sent two files. The Bond-Severance Agreement. And the Asset Division. Sign them."I heard a heavy thud on his end."You... you want to sever our bond?" Julian's voice shook. "Vesper, we're fated mates! The Moon Goddess chose us! You can't just—""I can," I said coldly. "Our healers can seve

Fifteen hours. The flight was finally over.As the plane descended, I saw it. The familiar skyline. The iconic peaks of Silver Crest, glittering in the sun.The old wolf next to me noticed my expression. He smiled gently. "Home, little one.""Yeah," I nodded. "Home."My wolf stirred. A deep thrum vibrated through me. It knew. It was answering the call of home. The second we landed, I turned on my phone.Messages flooded in.Twenty-three from Julian, sent between 10 p.m. last night and 8 a.m. this morning. The first: "Vesper, your flight should be landing soon. Let me know you're safe."The third: "Why haven't you texted back? Are you off the plane yet?"The seventh: "Vesper? Are you ignoring me on purpose?"The twelfth: "I had Elodie make your favorite food. Get here soon. Don't let her effort go to waste."The eighteenth: "This is so selfish. You've got Elodie worried sick. "Yes," I nodded.A relieved breath escaped him, though a flicker of guilt still crossed his face. He reached for my hand."Vesper, you're always so understanding. I knew I could count on you."The second his fingers brushed my wrist, I pulled my hand back.Julian froze. "You...?"His phone buzzed with a string of new messages from Elodie."Julian, hurry! It really hurts!""I'm so scared by myself.""You promised you'd protect me."Julian glanced at his phone and started to panic."I have to go," he said, rushing to the bedroom. "Elodie can't handle this alone."Five minutes later, he came out with a suitcase."Vesper, I'll go to the new pack and get everything settled. You just come straight over when you're done packing.""Okay."Julian got to the door, then turned back. "Vesper, I love you. We'll be together again soon."I looked at him and said nothing. The door closed, and the apartment fell into a dead silence.I continued packing, my movements robotic and calm. The next morning,
